Text 10
Many expressions that we use in English come from movies and books.Today we will explore an expression from Lewis Carroll’s famous book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
The book was published in 1865.The story is about a young girl falling,falling,falling...for a long time down a rabbit hole.(17) When she finally lands, she finds herself in a strange world. In this world are some of the most recognizable characters in children’s literature. Many of them and other expressions from the book have found their way into American English. The first character Alice meets is the White Rabbit, which isn’t a usual rabbit.(18) He is wearing a vest and carrying a pocket watch. As Alice chases after him,she falls down the rabbit hole into Wonderland and that is (19) where her mysterious adventures begin.
In English,“chasing a white rabbit” means to chase an impossible dream.“Following the white rabbit” means you are in the middle of an unusual situation.(20) “Falling down the rabbit hole” means you get interested in something else and lose ideas about time.
Using expressions from popular books can add special flavor. And when used properly, they also show you have a deeper understanding of the English language.

Treating Rarer Cases in First Aid Situations
Help someone who is having a seizure
Seizures (疾病突发) can be scary things for people who have never experienced them before.Luckily, helping people with seizures is relatively straightforward.
·Clear the surroundings to protect the person from hurting themselves.
·Activate (启动) emergency medical services if the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes or if the person is not breathing afterward.
·After this period of time has ended, help them to the floor and put something soft or flat under their head.Turn them on to their side to ease breathing, but do not hold the person down or try to stop their movements.
·Be friendly and reassure them as their consciousness (意识) returns and do not offer food or water until they are fully alert.
Help someone survive a heart attack
It helps to know the symptoms of a heart attack, which can include rapid heartbeat, pressure or pain in the chest,a sore throat, general unease, and sweating.Rush the person to the hospital immediately while giving them an aspirin, which the person should chew.
Identify someone having a stroke
Again, knowing the symptoms of a stroke is important. They include temporary inability to talk or understand what is being said, confusion, loss of balance or dizziness, inability to raise their arms and severe headaches with no warning, among others.Rush a person that you suspect has had a stroke to the emergency room immediately.

As a 51-year-old first-aid responder since 1984,Jeffrey never knows what type of situation he might walk into,or who he’ll meet along the way.
Ten years into the job,Jeffrey received a call that reported that a man in his early 30s had fallen down in the Mall of America. When Jeffrey and his partner arrived at the scene, they found the young male face down on the ground. He had gone unconscious, making weak attempts to breathe. His wife stood beside him holding their small son in horror. They quickly rushed to calm the man to keep him under control and offer necessary first aid. After Jeffrey dropped the patient off at the neighboring hospital,he thought about the man and his family for a long time.
Jeffrey thought he had experienced everything under the sun until one random visit to Office Max three years ago, where he met a man repeatedly walking back and forth while staring at him.As it turned out,the man was the patient he had saved 20 years earlier.
“You gave me 20 years more than I ever thought I’d have,” the man said.He thanked Jeffrey repeatedly and told him he had someone he wanted him to meet.He stepped around the corner and reappeared with a 20-something-year-old man.Jeffrey instantly knew that it was the son he had seen standing by his mother all those years ago.
“That day changed my life,” Jeffrey said.“Before that, everything was about work. When I talk to my beginner-training class,I tell them you never know the effect you can have on someone’s life.”

26.Why was the man thankful to Jeffrey
A.Jeffrey helped bring up his little son.

Emergencies can happen anytime,so being prepared for one is important for you and your family.Having a properly stocked first aid kit in your home is an easy but necessary part of good emergency preparation.
Pick a good container
One good choice is a large translucent plastic container, which makes it easy to see the materials inside.Lunchboxes are also another good choice.Basically,if it’s big enough, portable, and at least somewhat water resistant,it can make a good container.Regardless of your container choice,it should be easy to recognize,so write “FIRST AID” on it with a marker.
Make your kit safely accessible
When your child is crying about a “boo-boo” on her knee, you don’t want your home kit buried on the back of a closet or lost because it’s not being returned to the same spot after each use.
Teach your family about the kit
For younger children who shouldn’t use the items in the kit, teach them where it’s located,so they could show a visitor, relative or babysitter. For older children and adults, instruct them on how to use the items in it.Use a first aid instruction booklet, like those available from the American Red Cross for guidance and place a booklet in the kit for reference.
Keep your kit up-to-date
No one wants to fetch a first aid kit and find the bandage box empty or the pain relievers expired(过期的).Keep track of supply amounts and expiration dates regularly.
Create a checklist in the kit
Record every item on a sheet of paper and keep it in the kit.Besides, record the amounts of the items and expiration dates next to the listed items on the checklist that you include in your kit.In this way, anyone who wants to reach the kit can immediately know what it includes and doesn’t include. Also, they can be clear whether the items can be used.

29.What should the young children be told about the home first aid kit
A.How to use the items.
B.What contains in it.
C.Where to place it.
D.When to fetch it.
30.Why should the home first aid kit be examined regularly
A.To make it clean and tidy.
B.To make sure it’s available.
C.To be familiar with the items.
D.To learn to deal with emergencies.
31.What makes it easy to find the items in the kit
A.First aid marker. B.A checklist.
C.A guidance. D.A booklet.
根据最后一段小标题Create a checklist in the kit及第二、三句Besides,record the amounts...includes and doesn’t include.

Disorders of the brain are a growing worry.Twelve mental-health conditions affect about 970 million people around the world according to the Global Burden of Disease Project:more than one in ten of the population. This figure could well be an underestimate.Neurological (神经学的) problems such as stroke, migraine (偏头痛),Parkinson’s and brain injury are collectively the leading global source of disability.Ageing populations with unhealthy ways of life are likely to make this problem much worse everywhere.
In an ideal world, science would be coming to the rescue. But the brain is a complex organ sometimes described as the most complex structure in the known universe.A private company spent an estimated $43 billion on research into therapies for Alzheimer’s disease between 1998 and 2017 and came up empty-handed.That big failure is perhaps the biggest reason why,in the 2010s,many drug firms abandoned or cut back on neuroscience research.
Happily, there are signs of a change. In our Technology Quarterly this week we report on a renaissance in neuroscience, with many drug companies, some of them big ones, showing renewed interest in the field. This fresh energy is coming from a variety of techniques and ideas.More precise diagnosis and well-confirmed biomarkers which reveal the course of disease, are improving clinical trials.New kinds of treatment such as gene therapy, are expanding the range of diseases that can be tackled.Other advances are an increasing amount of data, which is proving critical to understanding the biological roots of neurological problems.
As hopes rise for tackling this final frontier of bio-medicine,it is worth remembering that the secrets to a healthy brain are not only going to come from a pill or psychotherapist’s treatments. The health of the brain is influenced by what goes on outside it such as nutrition, exercise, the abuse of alcohol, education, social connections and pollution.None of this should be surprising:The health of the brain is tied to the health and the well-being of the body that it sits in.Efforts to ensure better brain health are an investment that will keep bringing advantages to individuals, and to societies, for decades to come.

Don’t judge a book by its cover. We have heard that advice over and over again. And it makes sense. Why should we judge someone who is overweight simply by how they look It has nothing to do with them as a person and it says nothing about all they have achieved in life.
36 We should not judge them as healthy simply because they are thin.
We care so much about weight that we think those who succeed in keeping a“healthy weight”must be healthy.
Many studies have shown that being overweight increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and even death. 37 Some studies just look at pounds. Some use body mass index(BMI) which includes both height and weight measurements. But neither one says anything about overall health for sure.
In some studies,a person’s fitness has been shown to be more important than overall weight.
That means those at “normal” weight, but below average fitness could be at higher risk than fitter and heavier people. 38
If you are thin and want to know if your health may be at risk, whole body MRIs(磁共振成像) can tell you if you are a TOFI (thin on the outside, fat on the inside). This is thought to increase your health risk even if you have a perfect body weight. 39 Rather, creating and keeping healthy lifestyle habits should be the goal.
Start now and you will be on your way to improving your overall health. 40 But even if it doesn’t,rest assured you are still improving your health and your life.
A.The same holds true for thin people.
B.Weight loss will usually naturally follow.
C.The article mainly talks about people in Australia.
D.So weight loss should not be what we always dream of.
E.How many times do you say “She looks great! Nice and thin!”?
F.But the problem lies with how we can know we are overweight.
G.So there is no such thing as healthy weight, only healthy lifestyles.

39.D [下文“Rather, creating and keeping healthy lifestyle habits should be the goal.”与D项“So weight loss should not be what we always dream of.”
40.B [下文“But even if it doesn’t...and your life.”与B项“Weight loss will usually naturally follow.”

Dear Kevin,
I’m writing to tell you about some activities related to first aid in our school.
Our school regularly holds contests designed to improve students’ knowledge of first aid, which significantly helps students develop their first aid skills,so that they can better protect themselves and offer first aid to others in case of emergencies such as fires or earthquakes. In addition,we each have a brochure on hand which contains basic tips on first aid, which is convenient for us to refer to whenever necessary.
What similar activities do you have in your school? Please share with me.
Yours,
Li Hua

“We crashed in someone’s yard and I hit the tree,” Norwood said. The impact jammed shut the driver’s side door,so Norwood climbed out of the front window. Two of her friends managed to get out of the car unharmed, but the collision caused her 16-year-old friend Simmons to hit her head on the backseat window.
When Norwood turned around, she didn’t see Simmons running with them so she had to run back to the car as fast as she could.Simmons was just sitting there unresponsive.Apparently, she passed out owing to the huge impact force. The unexpected crash left the girls in panic.A lot of people started to gather around to see what was happening. The crowd watched in astonishment,open-mouthed.Someone advised to make an emergency call immediately.

And that was when the training Norwood had just learned kicked in. She started yelling,“Back up! Back up! She needs space!” She pulled Simmons out of the backseat, cautiously avoiding broken glass from the window. Then she checked her pulse on the neck and put her head against Simmons’ chest before she started performing CPR on her immediately. After applying pressure constantly for some time and several rescue breaths,Simmons regained consciousness. The moment the ambulance arrived,Simmons was rushed to the hospital without delay, where she received further treatment.
When Miller and her students learned about the news, they were at a loss of words and so proud. “I was just absolutely astonished,” Miller said.“ It is so amazing that Norwood should rescue her friend with the knowledge and skills she learned in such a short time. This is what every teacher dreams of.” Simmons was so overwhelmingly touched by her friend that she could hardly utter a single word. She conveyed her sincere gratitude to Norwood, tears streaming down her cheeks. But for Norwood’s quick thinking, she couldn’t have been rescued and recovered so well.Brimming with pride and confidence,Norwood strengthened her determination to pursue a career in the medical field.

24.What did Jeffrey do with the young man
He cured the man at the scene.
He took care of the man’s wife and son.
He only sent the man to hospital.
He did what was needed.
25.What did Jeffrey think of the encounter with the man at Office Max
It was a common routine.
It was troublesome.
It was unbelievable.
It was a dangerous situation.
26.Why was the man thankful to Jeffrey

He got a promotion to be a team leader.
He took up teaching work to train newcomers.

28.Which is close to the meaning of the underlined word “translucent”?
Wide. Advanced.
Clear. Strong.
29.What should the young children be told about the home first aid kit
How to use the items. What contains in it.
Where to place it. When to fetch it.
30.Why should the home first aid kit be examined regularly
To make it clean and tidy.
To make sure it’s available.
To be familiar with the items.
To learn to deal with emergencies.
31.What makes it easy to find the items in the kit
First aid marker. A checklist.
A guidance. A booklet.

32.What does the author suggest in both the first and last paragraphs to prevent brain diseases
Less worry. More financial aid.
Magic medicine. Healthy lifestyles.
33.What contribute to the renewed interest in neuroscience research
Profits and fame. Advances in technology.
Larger range of diseases. More clinical trials.
34.What is most likely to be the author’s job
A journal editor. A librarian.
A medical student. A clinical doctor.
35.What does the text mainly talk about
Complex brain health.
A brand-new research topic.
Renewed neuroscience research.
Defeating brain disorders.

Don’t judge a book by its cover. We have heard that advice over and over again. And it makes sense. Why should we judge someone who is overweight simply by how they look It has nothing to do with them as a person and it says nothing about all they have achieved in life.
__36__ We should not judge them as healthy simply because they are thin.
We care so much about weight that we think those who succeed in keeping a“healthy weight”must be healthy.
Many studies have shown that being overweight increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and even death.__37__ Some studies just look at pounds. Some use body mass index(BMI) which includes both height and weight measurements. But neither one says anything about overall health for sure.
In some studies,a person’s fitness has been shown to be more important than overall weight.
That means those at “normal” weight, but below average fitness could be at higher risk than fitter and heavier people.__38__
If you are thin and want to know if your health may be at risk, whole body MRIs(磁共振成像) can tell you if you are a TOFI (thin on the outside, fat on the inside). This is thought to increase your health risk even if you have a perfect body weight.__39__ Rather, creating and keeping healthy lifestyle habits should be the goal.
Start now and you will be on your way to improving your overall health.__40__ But even if it doesn’t,rest assured you are still improving your health and your life.

25.What did Jeffrey think of the encounter with the man at Office Max
A.It was a common routine.
B.It was troublesome.
C.It was unbelievable.
D.It was a dangerous situation.
根据文章第三段“Jeffrey thought he had experienced everything...he had saved 20 years earlier.”

26.Why was the man thankful to Jeffrey
A.Jeffrey helped bring up his little son.
B.Jeffrey donated to support his family.
C.Jeffrey’s help gave him the present happy life.
D.Jeffrey’s kindness taught his son to be a new doctor.

A.He was rewarded with much money.
B.He changed his attitude to his job.
C.He got a promotion to be a team leader.
D.He took up teaching work to train newcomers.

28.Which is close to the meaning of the underlined word “translucent”?
A.Wide. B.Advanced.
C.Clear. D.Strong.
根据下文的which makes it easy to see the materials inside可知,所选急救箱应该是透明的,这样可以让急救箱中的东西清晰可见。

Create a checklist in the kit及第二、三句Besides,record the amounts...includes and doesn’t include.

D
32.What does the author suggest in both the first and last paragraphs to prevent brain diseases
A.Less worry. B.More financial aid.
C.Magic medicine. D.Healthy lifestyles.
根据第一段“Ageing populations with unhealthy ways of life are likely to make this problem much worse everywhere.”以及最后一段“The health of the brain is influenced by what goes on outside it such as nutrition, exercise, the abuse of alcohol, education, social connections and pollution.”

33.What contribute to the renewed interest in neuroscience research
A.Profits and fame.
B.Advances in technology.
C.Larger range of diseases.
D.More clinical trials.
根据第三段尤其是“This fresh energy is coming from a variety of techniques and ideas.”

34.What is most likely to be the author’s job
A.A journal editor. B.A librarian.
C.A medical student. D.A clinical doctor.
根据第三段中的“In our Technology Quarterly this week we report on a renaissance in neuroscience”可推断出,作者的职业很可能是某期刊的编辑。

35.What does the text mainly talk about
A.Complex brain health.
B.A brand-new research topic.
C.Renewed neuroscience research.
D.Defeating brain disorders.

37.F [上文“Many studies have shown that...and even death.”与F项“But the problem lies with how we can know we are overweight.”
38.G [上文“That means those at ‘normal’ weight...and heavier people.”与G项“So there is no such thing as healthy weight, only healthy lifestyles.”
39.D [下文“Rather, creating and keeping healthy lifestyle habits should be the goal.”与D项“So weight loss should not be what we always dream of.”
40.B [下文“But even if it doesn’t...and your life.”与B项“Weight loss will usually naturally follow.”

故填where。]
If we were to get hurt while we were trying to save someone...,由此可知,此处应填trying。
on the way意为“在途中”。故填on。]
it’s+形容词+(for sb) to do sth,意为“(对某人来说)做某事是……”。故填to breathe。]
根据上文“We can look for colour,coughing and eye”可知,此处应填move的名词形式作宾语。
此处特指difference between life and death,应用定冠词the修饰。故填the。 ]

Dear Kevin,
I’m writing to tell you about some activities related to first aid in our school.
Yours,
Li Hua
Norwood,a junior at St.Petersburg Lakewood High School, participated in the school’s Athletic Lifestyle Management Academy. The program prepares students for various careers in health science with two components. The first one is a hands-on skills component where the students have to demonstrate that they are expert in the skills of adult, child and infant CPR (心肺复苏),how to help somebody who’s choking,as well as how to use an AED (自动体外除颤仪).And the other is a written test component, showing that they master that knowledge.Norwood took a great interest in the programme, which was in line with her initial career pursuit in the future.
On the first day of the programme, her instructor Miller did vital signs and students learned how to check blood pressure, check pulse, and apply CPR.Norwood watched closely and performed the hands-on skills well.
Norwood and Simmons shared a long friendship. They had been friends since the seventh grade and since then they had built an unbreakable bond. The following day after school, the 16-year-old girl Norwood was driving three friends home in St.Petersburg,Florida, when another driver slammed into her from her left and sent her car rushing forward in an uncontrollable way.
