How I study English
I often hear some students say English is difficult, and it gives them a headache. So they can’t learn it well. But English is very easy for me. I’m good at it. I’m very glad to tell you something about how I study English.
First, I think an interest in English is very important. When I was in Grade One, we had a new subject—English. It was fresh for me. I was interested in it, so I worked hard at it. Soon we had an English exam and I got a very good mark. How happy I was! After that, I learned English harder and harder. Our English teacher often teaches us English songs. The songs sound nice. I often think how interesting English is!
Second, I think English is a foreign language. I should learn it well in the following ways: Listen to the teacher carefully, speak bravely, read aloud and have a good vocabulary (词汇) . Then practice again and again, never be tired. And I also have a good habit: Asking whenever I have a question, I must make it clear by asking our English teacher. How happy I am when I understand!
Besides this, I often read English stories, jokes and easy novels. From these I know English is not only interesting, but also useful. They help me understand a lot of things. So to do more reading is an important way to learn English well.
And I also do some exercises from our class magazines, and I often write English diaries. English has become a close friend of mine.

If you’ve ever used pi in math class, you probably used the number 3.14. In fact, the number for pi is much longer. Pi is called an irrational number (无理数) because the digits (数位) after the decimal point (小数点) never end or repeat.
In 2015, a young man from India named Rajveer Meena set a world record by memorizing 70,000 digits of pi. But pi is much longer than that.
On Pi Day ( March 14th) this year, a company called Solidigm said it calculated (计算) pi to105 trillion (万亿) digits. And the 105 trillionth digit is 6. It broke the record for how many digits of pi we know.
Pi is really useful for circles in math. It helps us connect the circumference with the diameter of a circle.
Even NASA scientists use pi for their work of studying space. But they only need about 15 digits of pi for their calculations.
Calculating pi also has another important use. It’s how scientists test new computer programs and data storage systems (数据存储系统).
Solidigm’s calculation of pi took around 75 days to finish. The company’s owner Brian Beeler said that the achievement needed a lot of work. They had to plan the calculation very carefully.
This isn’t the first time that Solidigm has calculated pi. In 2022, Google Cloud calculated 100 trillion digits of pi. Solidigm matched that in 2023.
In the future, we’ll keep finding more and more digits of pi. We’ll never be able to calculate all the digits of pi because it goes on forever. But it still helps us see how great computers can be.

Imagine you live in a smart city. Everything you need—schools, cinemas and parks——is all within a 10-minute walk. Many countries around the world are carrying out ideas similar to “10-minute city”. They have either come up with plans or have made it a reality.
China The idea of a “15-minute city” has been realized in China. In July, Zhangyan Village built a “happy community”. The community is a 1,500-square meter area with a cafeteria, an entertainment center, a health center, a post office, and a restroom. All are within a 15-minute walk. According to online magazine Sixth Tone, the city plans to make such communities for nearly 99 percent of locals by 2035. Other places are following this step. Thirty cities across the country will try out the idea of 15-minute communities in the future.

Under her plan, Paris will get rid of (消除) 72 percent of its on-street parking spaces for cars. Green spaces, gardens and playgrounds will replace them. The city will turn busy crossings into squares as well.
The USA Portland, a city in the state of Oregon, hopes to make 20-minute neighborhoods. People can reach places and services such as schools and parks by walking or biking for 20 minutes or less. We all know that the British people love their manners (礼仪). They are part of their national identity (特性), as well as having fish and chips and complaining about the weather. Recently I read online that they say “sorry” up to eight times a day.
After some research I have not been able to find any specific reasons why they are like this. I suppose, for centuries, manners, including how they behave at table and talk to other people have been one of the differences between the lower and upper classes and those manners show their social classes. Britain has traditionally been a quite conservative (保守的) country. There are many articles suggesting that their seemingly polite attitude of always saying “please” and “thank you” is quite false because it is impossible for a person to always feel that he or she wants to thank someone or say “please”.
Maybe it is for this reason that people are going one of two ways: they are too polite and hold back their feelings or they are not polite at all and express their true feelings directly. Some British people are tired of pretending that they are always happy and having to please others. But sometimes because they feel they have to be polite, they are prevented from saying what they truly think.

Every English learner needs to know how to ask for something in English. There are a number of ways to do this.
If you know someone has something, you can ask for it with a polite question. If you don’t know, it’s possible to ask for something with a yes or no question. Be careful not to use the direct expressions. In other words, don’t say “Give me that”, but ask kindly as the following examples, “Do you have a pen I could borrow ” “Is there any wine ” “Did you buy any bread ”
If you know or see someone has something, ask a polite question with “could”, “may” or “might”. It’s also possible to use “can” in some special situations. In the past, “can” was not used when people asked for something, but meant ability. In the UK, people mainly use “Can you lend me… ” or “Can I have… ” In the US, this is still considered to be wrong and “May I have… ” is preferred.
It’s common to use “Could you lend/hand/give… ” You can also use “May/Can I borrow… ” “Could/Can you lend me… ” “May I have… ” “Could you hand/give me… ” Do not begin a sentence with “please”, but you can add “please” at the end of the sentence to be polite.

Do you know that the “Happy Birthday to You” song is the first song sung in outer space Apollo IX astronauts sang it on March 8, 1969. It is one of the most popular English songs of all time. Here’s the story behind it.
The song was written by two sisters from Kentucky, Mildred and Patty Smith Hill. It was first published under the title of “Good Morning to All” in 1893. It was used as a classroom greeting. Teachers sang it each day to welcome their students to the classroom.
The composer, Mildred Hill, was a concert pianist. Her sister Patty Smith Hill wrote the original lyrics (最初的歌词) for the song while she was a teacher in a kindergarten in Louisville, Kentucky, where Mildred also taught.
The Hill sisters copyrighted (取得版权) their song on October 16, 1893. However, it appeared without their agreement in Robert H. Coleman’s songbook on March 4, 1924. Coleman changed part of the lyrics to say, “Happy Birthday to You”, although the song still had its original title. The song was then published several times over the next ten years, often with small changes in the lyrics. In 1934, when the song was sung every night in a Broadway Musical, another Hill sister, Jessica, went to court (法院) over the copyright problem of the song. She won her case.
The Hill sisters, who devoted their lives to educating children, could never imagine that the simple little song would continue to earn about $ 2 million every year.

Many expressions we use in American English come from movies and books. Today we will learn some expressions from Lewis Carroll’s famous book Alice in Wonderland.
The story is about a young girl falling for a long time down a rabbit hole. When she finally lands, she finds herself in a strange world and meets some strange characters.
The first character Alice meets is the White Rabbit. The White Rabbit is not a usual rabbit. Alice chases after him, and that is where her adventures begin.
In English, “chasing a white rabbit” means to chase an impossible dream. “Following the white rabbit” means you are in the middle of an unusual situation. This situation may change your life. Like “chasing a white rabbit”, “falling down the rabbit hole” means we get interested in something else and lose ideas about time.
Later in the story, Alice is the guest at a tea party—a crazy tea party! There she meets the March Hare. The hare seems to be truly crazy. To be “mad as a March Hare” means to be completely crazy.
Using expressions from popular books can add special flavor (味道). And when used properly, they also show you have a deeper understanding of the English language.
