From the moment we wake up and check the messages on our smartphones, we’re exposed to text design. Throughout our day, storefronts and websites announce themselves through the typefaces(字体) they use. Adonian Chan, a 33-year-old Hong Kong graphic designer, calls the different texts a “visual landscape”.
In his hometown, signs written in traditional Chinese characters can be found around every corner. One calligraphy style, above all, has come to represent Hong Kong: Beiwei Kaishu, which has its origins in 4th-century China. After World War Ⅱ, Beiwei Kaishu was used widely in Hong Kong signs, partly because it is highly recognizable, even from far distances.
But with the appearance of LED signs and computer-generated typefaces, signs written in the style were disappearing from Hong Kong. As a result, few designers working today are aware of the Beiwei Kaishu style.
In 2016, Chan asked a master of calligraphy in Hong Kong to teach him to write in the Beiwei Kaishu style. He then started the process of digitizing the characters. He first wrote the characters on paper with a brush and ink. Next, he made a pencil sketch. Finally, he recreated the characters digitally, using a computer program called Glyphs.
One of the main challenges when digitizing the ancient calligraphy is striking a balance between the artistic expression and the need of design, says Chan. He can complete two characters a day, depending on their complexity, and is aiming to digitize 6,000 characters.
Chan says his project is more than preserving a centuries-old writing style and that he sees himself as building on the work of previous generations. He has named his typeface Beiwei Zansyu and hopes it will eventually be installed on phones and computers.
24. Why was Beiwei Kaishu popular in Hong Kong after World War Ⅱ
A. It had a long history. B. It could be seen clearly.
C. It was a symbol of Hong Kong. D. It fitted in the “visual landscape”.
25. What leads to the disappearance of Beiwei Kaishu
A. Its pattern. B. Urban development.
C. Its designers. D. New technologies.
26. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A. Beiwei Zansyu will be available soon.
B. Beiwei Zansyu looks great on the phone.
C. Chan’s project is time-consuming.
D. Preserving the ancient style is Chan’s only purpose.
27. Which is the best title for the text
A. Digitizing Tradition: Adonian Chan’s Journey with Beiwei Zansyu
B. Hong Kong’s Visual Landscape: Beiwci Kaishu in Signs
C. A Disappearing Typeface: Lost Art in Technology Era
D. Calligraphy Crisis: Technology Saves Art

A new study suggests classic paintings by well-known Impressionists Joseph Turner and Claude Monet may have been influenced by air pollution during the Industrial Revolution.
The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by authors from Harvard and Sorbonne universities, analyzed 60 oil paintings by Turner from 1796 to 1850 and 38 paintings by Monet from 1864 to 1901.
Scientists don’t know exactly how polluted the cities were during that time for lack of data. However, researchers say examining the works of Turner and Monet can give a picture of long-term environmental change with the air pollution.
In particular, researchers said changes in local sulfur dioxide(二氧化硫)emissions from burning coal may changes in the colour contrast and intensity of Turner, Monet, and others’ works, even after the artistic trends and subject matter of the time.
Scientists successfully measured painters’ representation of nature, focusing on differences in local weather patterns which influenced colour in works painted in different parts of Europe. Paintings done in Britain generally feature a paler blue sky than other works in other parts of the continent. Generally, artists can historically accurately represent their environment, so Turner and Monet were chosen because they are famous for their landscape and cityscape paintings and also because they were active during the Industrial Revolution, when air pollution grew at a rate never seen before.
Additionally, researchers say that as the air in London and Paris became more polluted, the cities would appear hazier(模糊的) to the eyes as well as in photographs. By comparing the paintings of Turner and Monet to pictures from the era, they were able to determine the artists were at least partly influenced by the change in emissions.
28. How did the researchers conduct the study
A. By referring to relevant historical records.
B. By comparing the paintings of Turner and Monet.
C. By examining Impressionists’ works closely.
D. By analyzing local weather patterns in Europe.
29. What did the researchers find in the works of Turner and Monet
A. Signs of air pollution. B. Change in subject matter.
C. Social trends of the period. D. Development of photography.
30. What can we learn from paragraph 5
A. European artists preferred landscape paintings.
B. Scientists focused on studying weather patterns.
C. Artists always intended to present environment.
D. Britain suffered from air pollution most in Europe.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. Industrial Revolution causes severe air pollution.
B. Air pollution makes itself a theme in Impressionist painting.
C. Impressionists’ works identify air pollution in the past.
D. Art mirrors the environment.

Most kids grow up learning they cannot draw on the walls. But it might be time to unlearn that training—this summer, a group of culture addicts, artists and community organizers are inviting New Yorkers to write all over the walls of an old house on Governor’s Island.
The project is called Writing On It All, and it’s a participatory writing project and artistic experiment that has happened on Governor’s Island every summer since 2013.
“Most of the participants are people who are just walking by or are on the island for other reasons, or they just kind of happen to be there,” Alexandra Chasin, artistic director of Writing On It All, tells Smithsonian.com.
The season this year runs through June 26 and features sessions facilitated by everyone from dancers to domestic workers. Each session has a theme, and participants are given a variety of materials and prompts and asked to cover surfaces with their thoughts and art. This year, the programs range from one that turns the house into a collaborative essay to one that explores the meaning of exile(流放).
Governor’s Island is a national historic landmark district long used for military purposes. Now known as “New York’s shared space for art and play”, the island, which lies between Manhattan and Brooklyn in Upper New York Bay, is closed to cars but open to summer tourists who flock for festivals, picnics, adventures, as well as these “legal graffiti(涂鸦)” sessions.
The notes and art covering the walls are an experiment in self-expression. So far, participants have ranged in age from 2 to 85. Though Chasin says the focus of the work is on the activity of writing, rather than the text that ends up getting written, some of the work that comes out of the sessions has stuck with her.
“One of the sessions that moved me the most was state violence on black women and black girls,” says Chasin, explaining that in one room, people wrote down the names of those killed because of it. “People do beautiful work and leave beautiful messages.”
32. Writing On It All was set up to .
A. attract tourists to Governor’s Island
B. attract people to writing and art courses
C. encourage participants to practice graffiti
D. encourage participants to express themselves
25. Which of the following about Writing On It All this year is NOT true
A. It ends on June 26th.
B. If asks people to write essays.
C. It consists of themed sessions.
D. It attracts people from all walks of life.
34. Why will people gather at Governor’s Island in the summer
A. To seek legal advice.
B. To receive military training.
C. To celebrate some festivals.
D. To experience driving adventures.
35. Some names written on the wall are mentioned in the last paragraph because .
A. they expressed a special message
B. they were beautiful handwriting
C. they were written by black women
D. they supported state violence

Effective small talk lies in developing genuine(真正的)interest. Genuine interest is about actively seeking to understand the other person, valuing their perspectives and appreciating the uniqueness they bring to the conversation. 37
Small talk extends beyond spoken words; it includes the art of observation. Actually listening to and connecting with someone is essential for a conversation. By providing your undivided attention, you convey respect and interest in what the other person has to say. 39 Ask follow-up questions to show that you value their insights. This depth of engagement lays the foundation for a more meaningful connection.
At the heart of successful small talk lies the authenticity(真实性) of your engagement. Authenticity generates a sense of trust and connection, making the conversation more meaningful and memorable. Avoid the desire to present an image or use scripted(脚本化的) responses. 40 In the world of small talk, authenticity is the key that unlocks the door to deeper connections and more fulfilling interactions.

I was sixteen years old and I loved music very much. I was dying to buy an album(音乐专辑) by my favourite band. However, the pocket money my parents gave me was just enough to get by. I didn’t have any extra money to buy the album, which made me disappointed.
Luckily, I found that there were many opportunities for part-time work in my neighbourhood. There were so many old people who needed help. So, in order to buy the album I wanted, I decided to find a part-time job to earn money.
I chose the oldest person I knew, Mrs. Hudson, who was over eighty years old, and could not tend her garden anymore. She had flowers, a grass lawn, and some tomato plants. I knocked on her door, trying to build up enough courage to ask her for work. Fortunately, she answered that she indeed needed help in her garden.
That was a really hot summer day. My first job was to pull out weeds. I got down on my knees and began to pull them out one by one. The task was tiring and boring, and I soon became really tired. However, thinking of the album I wanted, I gathered all my energy and kept moving.
“If only I had a portable electric fan(便携式电风扇)!” I said to myself, wiping the sweat from my face. After several hours of hard work, I was paid ten dollars. It was less than I thought, but it was enough for the album.
After getting that ten dollars, I couldn’t wait to go to the supermarket to buy my favourite album. I believed it would be a memorable moment when I was able to buy what I liked through my efforts.
On the way to the supermarket, I was singing a song excitedly when I happened to see my mother who was working on the opposite side of the road. Actually, I had never seen how she worked before; I just knew she was a saleswoman.

Dear John,
How is everything going Knowing you are interested in the Chinese Calligraphy Course held by my school, I’m delighted to share.my experience with you.
To carry on and develop traditional Chinese culture and enrich our school life, the Chinese Calligraphy Course was arranged for us, where an expert in calligraphy delivered a speech on the history of Chinese Calligraphy and demonstrated some basic handwriting skills. Moreover, we were guided to create our own works. Not only did the course offer me a unique insight into Chinese cultural aesthetics, but it also helped me cultivate a good habit of paying attention to details.
I would be very glad if my letter could be of any help. Wish you all the best.
Yours,
Li Hua

My mother was handing out leaflets(传单) to passers-by. Under the burning sun, her T-shirt was damp with sweat. She would give a leaflet to everyone that passed by, with an eager smile on her face. Some people just walked right past her while some others would refuse by waving their hands. There were also some people who would accept the leaflet politely but throw it into a garbage can right away. Seeing that scene, I couldn’t help but feel bad. I never considered my mother’s work to be so hard.
I continued making my way to the supermarket. However, when I found the album I had been longing for, my mother’s sweaty face came to my mind and I hesitated. I gave up buying the album and bought a portable electric fan instead. Then I returned to the place where my mother worked. She was obviously surprised to see me standing in front of her. When I took out the fan, telling her that it was for her, she was moved to tears and then broke into a happy smile. It was when I saw a big smile on her face that I understood the true value of money.

W: Well, thank you everyone for your interest in our Pyrenean Charity Challenge. So, what are you signing up for We’ll walk from Wednesday to Friday through the beautiful scenery of the Spanish Pyrenees. The route will take us through a variety of landscapes: first we’ll follow an amazing path along the coast. Then we’ll head away from the coast and walk through hills and forest. We will walk about 15 kilometers per day. It should take us about six to seven hours. Each day’s walking will start from one hotel and finish at the next hotel on the route. We’ll walk at a leisurely speed, so this challenge is no problem if you’re a fit and active person. Previous experience is useful, but it’s not absolutely necessary. We will have an experienced leader who’s fully trained and knows the route.
What will you need to take The most important item you’ll need is good walking boots. You should buy them well in advance to make sure they fit well. You’ll need a waterproof jacket to keep you dry and warm and walking shorts are a good idea. You will also need a small backpack to carry your lunch and a water bottle.
