For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any
clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about
boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do
Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is
because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it. From the parents’ point of
view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ complete unreasonableness. And of course,
the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped.
In this article, I’ll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and
parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap.
The first no-win situation is quarrels over unimportant things. Examples include the color of
the teen’s hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child’s failure
to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends.
Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad
attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong.
Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is—politics, the laws of physics,
or the proper way to break an egg—the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right
and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority—someone who
actually knows something—and therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents
and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they’ll continue to fight these
battles forever and never make any real progress.
24.Why does the author compare the parent-teen war to a border conflict
A.Both can continue for generations. B.Neither has any clear winner.
C.Both are about where to draw the line. D.Neither can be put to an end.
25. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean
A.The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents.
B.The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict.
C.The teens cause their parents of misleading them.
D.The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict.
26. Parents and teens want to be right because they want to ______.
A.give orders to the other B.know more than the other
C.gain respect from the other D.get the other to behave properly
27. What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows
A.Solutions for the parent-teen problems. B.Examples of the parent-teen war.
C.Causes for the parent-teen conflicts. D.Future of the parent-teen relationship.

Anyone who’s lived through middle school knows those years can be particularly
challenging. Some researches show youths across the U.S. are struggling with mental health. The
physical health benefits of bike riding have been well-documented. Wilson, a researcher at Loma
Linda University School of Medicine, and his co-authors carried out a new study to see if taking
part in a cycling program could result in measurable changes in mind for teenagers.
The study involved more than 1,200 students, ages 11 to 14. Students participated in a
cycling class for at least three days a week, for a period of 6 weeks. They learned cycling safety
and practicing skills outdoors while raising their heart rate and just having fun. The students
completed standardized questionnaires before and after the program designed to measure their
health.
“We know cycling can benefit the body. Our research shows how it benefits the mind and
social relationships as well. Bike riding can be an ideal activity for adolescents because of the
benefits it offers,” said Wilson.
“Cycling engages several parts of brain function. You are looking at your hearing, you’re
balancing, you’re navigating and turning. Oftentimes, you’re doing it with someone else, so
there’s the positive effect of company or group activity,” said Allan Reiss, a professor at Stanford
University School of Medicine.
While exercise has powerful mental health benefits, it’s not universal. For example,
previous research has shown that teenage girls are at higher risk of mental health problems like
depression and anxiety than boys. The current study found that, while middle school girls
reported increased well-being after participating in the cycling program, that increase “may just
reach the kind of baseline level for male students,” Wilson said. And other aspects of healthy
living are also important, noted Wilson. The study found that teenagers who didn’t limit screen
time to a maximum of two hours a day, or who got less than the recommended 8.5 hours of sleep,
saw less improvement in their well-being, he said.
28. What does the new study mainly focus on
A. Challenges in middle school. B. Youths in America.
C. Physical benefits of cycling. D. Mental effects of bike riding.
29. What did the students do in the program
A. Attend the cycling class for a week. B. Learn how to keep safe while cycling.
C. Raise their heart rate by cycling indoors. D. Design questions to measure their health.
30. What is Reiss’s attitude to the result of the study
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Negative.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Application of the research results.
B. Doubts about the research methods.
C. Further explanation of the research findings.

Researchers from the University of Western Australia recently studied 3,000 middle and
high school students.Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from
home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of
these “fly-in,fly-out” parents might influence the health of their children.
A higher percentage(比例) of teenagers who experienced the long absence of a parent had
emotional(情感的 ) or behavioural problems compared with those whose parents worked more
traditional hours. This supports earlier research that found a high percentage of emotional
problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school or whose parents were
seldom at dinner.
Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time, but it helps to be home
at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted(盆
栽的) plant.
Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without
trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the
sitting room where her teenagers watch TV.They enjoy each other’s company without the need to
talk.Another friend usually accepts his daughter’s invitation to work or read nearby while she sits
and does her homework.Perhaps, that,at least for some families,is the best way for a teenager and
their parents to stay close.
In fact, many years of research suggests that children use their parents as a safe base(基地,
大本营) from which to explore the world.Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their
parents’ movements from room to room, even while going on with their own activities.Perhaps
our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay
away from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand,so as parents we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower”,as
a gift, whose quiet and steady(稳定的) presence will give them a great day.
32.What did the study find about the 618 teens
A.They had more dinners with their parents.
B.They were more prepared to help themselves.
C.They showed more dislike for traditional working hours.
D.They were more likely to have trouble with their feelings.
33.What is the author’s attitude to her two friends’ behaviour
A.She doubts them. B.She supports them.
C.She is worried about them. D.She cares little about them.
34.What does earlier research say about young kids according to paragraph 5
A.They want their parents’ presence. B.They want their parents to be safe.
C.They want more freedom from parents. D.They show more interest in new activities.

Dear Lisa,
I am sorry to hear that you are going through a hard time at the moment. The truth is that a number of students are under stress when entering senior high school, so there is no need for you to feel alone. Here I'd like to offer you some useful suggestions.
First of all, try to put yourself in your parents' shoes, then you will understand why they expect so much of you — maybe they see a bright future for you. Second, you could try communicating your feelings to your parents in a friendly way, which will help you reduce your stress. Last but not least, be confident about yourself, and everything will come out right in time.
I hope you can free yourself from your stress soon and improve your relationship with your parents.
Best wishes,
Li Hua

M: Not too bad, except Mom is laid up with a cold. So I have to ask for leave and stay home for her.
Text 6
W: How was your first day at work, dear
M: Great! It’s my first office job, and I really enjoyed it.
W: I’m glad. It’s great that you’re getting this work experience while you’re home from university for the summer vacation.
M: Agreed! Today, I created an article about new technology. I wrote this piece about how Chinese factories and engineers make 3D printing and smart glasses available worldwide!
W: That sounds very exciting. Now, come into the kitchen, and I’ll get you some food.

W: Tom, what were you watching just now
M: I was watching a TV series Heartland. It’s about a family who lives on a farm with horses and cattle.
W: Why did you watch such a series It must be very boring.
M: Well, I really love watching it. Though its story is neither exciting nor touching, it tells about the life that I truly want to live.
W: You mean a simple and peaceful life
M: Yes. I’ve been thinking a lot recently about living in the countryside like my grandparents. I can keep many animals and plants and then get safe, healthy food there. I can even slow my pace in the busy world, looking at the scenery around the world and enjoying myself.
W: So do you want to move to the countryside
M: Yes. If you get tired of the city life someday, why not experience it for yourself
W: Well, I grew up here. Life here is so much more exciting.

W: Son, it’s time you decided on a course of study. You’ve been in college for almost two years. Haven’t you decided what you want to do with your life
M: That’s a big question, Mom. And I haven’t had any idea yet. But I have been thinking hard about what I want to study. I think I should study chemistry. The major will look good on applications if I want to apply to medical school. It’ll also look good on job applications if I decide to join a big company after I graduate. I could work for a company that makes medicine. Or I could become an artist.
W: Wait a minute — did you say you want to become an artist We aren’t sending you to an art school...
M: I didn’t say that. But if I did want to be an artist, studying chemistry might be useful. Right now, I’m learning about some famous painters who studied chemistry. Some of them created their own paints, using what they learned in their chemistry courses.
W: You’re worrying me, Daniel.

M: Hello! You seem worried. Can I help you
W: Oh, I don’t know how to ski.
M: Is it the first time that you have come here to ski
W: Yes. It’s even the first time I have seen the real white snow.
M: No kidding! Where are you from One of my friends is from Singapore, and there’s no snow there. Are you a Chinese
W: Yes. My family and I lived in Hainan, China before we came to America. We do not have snow in winter. It’s always sunny.
M: No wonder. I guess you must be a good swimmer, then.
W: You’re right. Swimming is my favourite hobby. I enjoy the feeling in the water. But I simply don’t know what to do on the snow.
M: Don’t worry. I’m sure you will learn it very soon. Now, keep bending while going down. OK. Move slowly. Do just like what I do. Yes, great.
W: I see. Oh, I am not that nervous! Thank you. You are so kind. How I wish we could be friends.

Whenever I work with my patients on improving their health, we start by asking a simple question, “Who is the most important person in your life ” Many people answer that the most important person is their child, their parent, their husband or wife or others they love. But the real answer is YOU! You are the most important person in your life!
When we put ourselves first, we are often seen as self-centred. But the reality is that when we take care of ourselves, we have even more to give to others. When someone says“I don’t have time to take care of myself”, what does that really mean It means you don’t think your basic needs are worthy of care. The truth is that when you don’t take care of yourself, every part of your body suffers. When you don’t eat right, your cells suffer. When you let stress get to you, your body suffers. All that damage actually ages you and makes you more likely to suffer from diseases.
