I. Grammar and Vocabulary
Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
S&A's plan to fight theft
The S&A Supermarket is the only place where residents in Boise can go shopping. It's also the most frequently (1) ( visit) shop for local police. In the first six months of 2016, 14% of the city's reports originated there, most for shopping(商店货物扒窃)-a figure that would be even higher if S&A called the police for every minor theft.
(2) ( ease) that burden and reduce shopping losses, S&A is starting to do police work. Earlier this summer, 90 employees (3) ( hire) to guard its doors and check receipts. As part of a program called Justice, they will work with existing employees to manage some small crimes internally. If an employee catches a thief(4) name is not in the police database— that is, a first- time offender— that person will get a choice: pay to take an online course about the consequences of their actions, or face charges. This idea, according to S&A, is to educate lawbreakers(5) involving the police.
But the efforts(6) (raise) concerns. For one, it's unclear(7) the online courses are as helpful as they seem. It is because one of the administrative organizations is being accused of both overcharging and falsely (8) ( send) so- called shoplifters to prison. And (9) there are extra staff members, S&A will remain difficult to
secure because of its size and accessibility, especially during late- night hours, when fewer employees are working.
Still, there are signs (10) the program could work. The local police department says the program reduced police calls to the store by 40.5% from last October through July. But something truly transformational will likely take years — and more police runs in the meantime.
Section B
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in each blank with a proper word given in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
Some Very“ American” Words Come from Chinese
Many of the Chinese words that are now part of English were borrowed long ago. Some are from Cantonese(广东话).
The English word kowtow is a verb that means to agree too easily to do what someone else wants you to do, or to obey someone with power in a way that seems 11 . It comes from the Cantonese word kau tau, which refers to the act of kneeling and lowering one's head as a sign of respect to 12 . In 1793, Britain's King sent Lord George Macartney and other tradesmen to China to 13 a trade agreement. The Chinese asked them to kowtow to the emperor. Lord Macartney refused for his 14 to do more than bend their knees. Soon after, the English word“ Kowtow” was born.
Another borrowed word that came about through 15 between two nations is gung- ho. In English, the word gung- ho is an adjective that means extremely excited about doing something. The Chinese characters “gōng” and “hé” together mean “ work together, cooperate.” The original term—gōngyè hézuòshè— means Chinese Industrial Cooperatives. Evans Carlson of the United States Marine Corps observed these cooperatives while in China. He was impressed, saying“... all the soldiers 16 themselves to one idea and worked together to put that idea over.” He then began using the term gung- ho in the Marine Corps to try to create the same spirit he had 11 .
In English, a typhoon is a very powerful and 18 storm that occurs around the China Sea and in the South Pacific. According to the Merriam- Webster New Book of Word Histories, the first typhoons reported in the English language were in India and were called“ ”. Later, when English ships encountered violent storms in the China Sea, Englishmen. learned the Cantonese word, which means“ great wind.” It is a coincidence that the word is 19 to. The modern form of the word — typhoon — was influenced by the Cantonese but 20 to make it appear more Greek.
III. Reading Comprehension
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
When 17- year- old Quattro Musser hangs out with friends, they don't drink beer or drive around with their dates. 21 , they stick to activities such as rock- climbing or talking about books.
They are in good company, according to a new study showing that teenagers are increasingly delaying activities that had long been seen as signs of passage into 22 . The study found that the percentage of adolescents in America who have a driver's license, who have tried alcohol, who date and who work for pay has dropped since 1976, with the most dramatic 23 in the past decade. To be sure, more than half of teens still engage in these activities, but the 24 have slimmed considerably. Between 1976,86 percent of high school seniors had gone on a date; between 2010 and 2015, only 63 percent had, the study found.
“ People say, ‘ Oh, it's because teenagers are more responsible, or more lazy, or more boring,’ but they’ re 25 the larger trend,” said Jean Twenge, lead author of the study. Instead, she said, youths may be less 26 activities such as dating or driving because in today's society, they no longer need to be.
According to an evolutionary- psychology theory, a person's life strategy slows down or speeds up depending on the person's 27 . Thus, exposure to a fierce and unpredictable environment leads to faster development, while a more resource- rich and secure environment has the 28 effect. In the first 29 ,“ you’d have a lot of kids and be in survival mode, start having kids young, expect your kids will have kids young, and expect that there will be more 30 and fewer resources,” said Twenge. A century ago, when life expectancy was lower and college education less common,“ the goal back then was survival, not violin lessons by 5,” Twenge said. In that model, a teenage boy might be thinking more 31 about marriage, and driving a car and working for pay would be important.
But the United States is shifting more toward the 32 model, and the change is apparent in socioeconomic terms, Twenge said.“ Even in families whose parents have never been to college, the idea that children need to be carefully 33 has become widely accepted.”
The 34 of“ adult activities” could not be due to more homework or after- school activities, the study said, noting that teens today spend fewer hours on homework than they did I the 1990s and the same amount of time on after- school activities. Nor could the use of smartphones and the Internet be entirely the 35 , the report said, since the decline began before they were widely available.

(A)
When a senior manager sits down with a prospective employee for an in- person interview, the preferred questions often stick to the applicant's interest in the position and company, according to a survey by staffing firm Aecountemps. But questions can sometimes be a bit more ... wacky.
“ What kind of animals would you be ” is one of the unique questions mentioned by senior managers in the survey. It is a way to keep interviewees on their feet and stimulate interesting discussion.
However, such questions are asked less frequently, the research shows. Just 6 percent of senior managers said their favorite questions to ask are theoretical questions, the lowest total except for“ other,” which also came in at 6 percent. A lot of senior managers said their favorite questions are ones“ relating to the position or company,” at 39 percent. These questions include“ Why do you want to work here ”,“ What do you know about this company ” etc. They are meant to determine if candidates have done their homework and how enthusiastic they are about the position.
Questions about“ previous or current experience” were referred to by 22 percent of senior managers as their favorite type of question. These inquiries—“ Why did you leave your last job ” and“ What did you like or dislike about your last job ” for instance—— are meant to look into applicants’ work history patterns and their overall fit for the position.
Further down the list, 18 percent of senior managers' favorite questions had to do with personalities and characteristics. They prefer, for example,“ What are your strengths and weaknesses ” and“ What' re your hobbies ”. And 10 percent had to do with personal goals and interests(“ Where do you see yourself in five or 10 years ”).
That means that managers strongly prefer to ask candidates questions about their interest in the position and work history. But there's always room for a sudden surprise.
36. In this passage, the word“ wacky”( paragraph 1) is closest in meaning to“ ”.
A. common B. aggressive C. inevitable D. weird
37. According to the survey, senior managers' most preferred questions are meant to find out .
A. what work experience candidates had B. how well- prepared candidates are
C. what candidates are most interested in 1). how knowledgeable candidates are
38. What will senior managers ask to determine how suitable a candidate is for the position
A. What kind of animal would you be
B. Why do you want to work here
C. What did you like or dislike about your last job
D. Where do you see yourself in five or 10 years
39. What is the passage mainly about

The budget line is an elementary concept that most consumers can understand without a need for graphs and equations (图表及等式)— it's the household budget, for example. Taken informally, the budget line describes the line of affordability for a given budget and specific goods. This same concept— one that most consumers make many times each day with reflection on it— is the basis of the more formal budget line concept in economics.
One of the interesting ways the study of economics relates to human behavior generally is that a lot of economics theory is the formalization of the kind of simple concept——a consumer's informal understanding of the amount she has to spend and what that amount will buy. In the process of formalization, the concept can be expressed as a mathematical equation or a graph that can be applied generally.
To understand this, think of a graph where the vertical axis(众轴) quantifies how many movie tickets you can buy and where the horizontal axis does the same for crime novels. You like going to the movies and reading crime novels and you have $150 to spend. In the example below, assume that each movie costs $10 and each crime novel costs $15. The more formal economics term for these two items is budget set.
If movies cost $10 each, then the maximum number of movies you can see with the money available is 15. To note this you make a dot at the number 15( for total movie tickets) at the extreme left- hand side of the chart. This same dot appears at the extreme left above“0” on the horizontal axis because you have no money left for books---- the number of books available in this example is 0.
You can also graph the other extreme—— all crime novels and no movies. Since crime novels in the example cost $15 and you have $150 available, if you spend all the available money crime novels, you can buy 10. So you put a dot on the horizontal axis at the number 10. You’ll place the dot at the bottom of the vertical axis because in this instance you have $0 available for movie tickets.
If you now draw a line from the highest, leftmost dot to the lowest, rightmost dot you'll have created a budget line. Any combination of movies and crime novels that falls below the budget line is affordable. Any combination above it is not.
43. What is this passage mainly about
A. Guidelines for household purchase.
B. The description of a daily phenomenon.
C. Ways of presenting research data.
D. The explanation of an economic concept.
44. The author uses the purchase of movie tickets and crime novels as an example of .
A. the formalization of the budget line
B. the formation of vertical and horizontal axes
C. an informal understanding of the budget line
D. a combination of budget set
45. What can be inferred from the passage about the budget line
A. The dots showing the maximum use of a budget can only be found on it.
B. It is intended to indicate one's household needs for specific goods.
C. Graphs can interpret it more precisely than equations.
D. It is used to explain consumers' shopping habits.
46. In the example mentioned in the passage, if you want to buy 1 0 movie tickets and 10 crime novels with the same budget, where should you make the dot
A. On the horizontal axis. B. On the vertical axis.
C. Above the budget line. D. Below the budget line.
Section C
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
A. Reading magazines enables children to be exposed to various subjects. B. Instead, it is necessary to introduce their kids to a wide range of books as well as magazines. C. The benefits of reading magazine articles can be achieved through school activities. D. Children can pass a magazine on to a brother or sister when they finish reading it. E. However, reading magazines offers many benefits to young readers. F. The articles in magazines are generally short.
Magazine Articles: More Valuable Than You May Think
Parents are often surprised when teachers suggest their children read magazines. They feel their kid's reading abilities have been underestimated. 47
Magazine articles can provide reluctant readers with a lively writing style that can inspire them to read more. 48 So a child can finish reading an article without losing interest due to a short attention span(持续时间). The writing in magazines also tends to be easy to read, especially if it is a children's publication.
By allowing children to read magazines at an early age, parents are encouraging development of a useful skill. Magazines and newspapers provide adults with critical news. Getting into the habit of reading magazines as a child will develop the lifelong habit of reading news articles.
.·49 Magazine articles challenge students to think about issues they may have never considered or cause them to rethink their world view. Information is available in a wide variety of reading levels because magazines are written for every audience imaginable. Many publications cover the same material in different writing styles that might make it easier for your child to comprehend.
When reading magazines together, family members get to learn about each other's interest. 50 Once each family member has finished reading each magazine, parents can even design art and writing projects for the whole family to work on.
All in all, magazines are valuable for many people, but in particular to children. The skills that they use and strengthen when reading magazines can be applied to further study. Encouraging children to read magazines could change them from a reluctant reader to a lover of reading.
IV. Summary Writing
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Becoming an attractive employee
The 2008 financial crisis created an unstable job market. Fast- forward to the present, and the economy has not fully recovered. Thus, it's of vital importance for job seekers to carefully strategize their approach to job application. And it is especially important for those new to the workforce. They should look at making themselves as attractive as possible to employers.
For young people, information technology skills will play an increasing role in the future. As the generation to have grown up in the Information Age, they are quite confident when it comes to showing off their interests and skills in this field. This makes them a natural fit for companies seeking expertise(专业技能) in technology, marketing, and networking. They should emphasize these skills when applying for jobs that require the ability to multitask.
Another attractive quality is experience. It is important that an applicant's resume list any activities that involved team work and goal- driven responsibilities. Membership in a sports or social club and participation as a volunteer are good examples of this. These activities involve goal management and planning, along with the ability to focus while competing on a team. When hiring committees see this, they see a candidate who is capable of working in a variety of environments.
Finally, an attractive quality when job- hunting is a great attitude toward a potential job. Young job seekers are known to be overconfident because they have been praised for everything they have done. But they must realize that the employment market is about how an employee will be a good fit for a company, not the other way around. In fact, in an interview, an important question to ask is:“ What would be expected of me as an employee ”
In today's tough job market, young job seekers need to provide a potential employer with good reasons to hire them.
