I grew up in a poor family. This was something I did not realize until I was older. I thought everyone in the city took the bus, because everyone in my neighborhood took the bus. I thought everyone in the city used the food bank, because all my friends’ cupboards were filled with the same government- labeled food that filled my cupboards. We all wore hand- me- down clothes.
Grocery shopping was my first experience understanding that my family was a little different. My mom used paper money that looked different from the paper money others in line were using. I asked my mom why our money looked different. She said that we used food stamps that were helped by the government so we could eat.
In high school, I was still embarrassed and wished we were not so poor, but I loved my mom and the other members of my family and knew we had things to be proud of. My mother taught me how to love and told me to believe in myself. Growing up in poverty taught me perseverance. I have always believed in myself and my abilities. I knew I could focus on school and build a life that looked different from my childhood.
As I became a man, I started understanding how my experiences enabled me to be resilient, and how to respect people for who they are as an individual— and not by what they have. I think there are a lot of fixed images placed on those experiencing poverty that do not actually come from the people experiencing it. These judgments come from people on the outside trying not to look into the experience. Hardworking, trustworthy, reliable, clean, efficient, successful and disciplined are all words not typically associated with poverty. But those words are very much shown by those experiencing poverty. I am proud to be who I am and proud of where I’m from.

California researchers developed a glove embedded with electronic sensors that can translate American Sign Language（ASL）into English in real time through an app on your smart- phone.
Unlike its past counterparts, the new glove is lightweight, inexpensive and long- lasting. The device could help remove communication barriers between signers and non- signers. Hopefully, this may open up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with non- signers without needing someone else to translate for them.
The team worked with four people who are deaf and use ASL and had them repeat gestures up to 15 times while wearing the glove- like device, simultaneously teaching a machine how to recognize them.
The glove has thin, stretchable sensors made from “electrically conducting yarns” that run up each finger and convert the movements into signals. These signals are sent to a “dollar- coin- sized” circuit board placed on the person’s wrist, which then wirelessly transfers them over to a smartphone.
The system was able to recognize 660 hand motions and finger placements that stand for each letter in the English alphabet, different phrases and each number. The algorithm（计算程序）recognized the correct signs about 99% of the time, and in less than one second — or about a tone word per second.
The researchers also placed sensors in between the participants eyebrows and on the sides of their mouths to “capture facial expressions that are a part of ASL”. The same exact hand- shape and movement can totally change meaning because of the facial expression that is used to accompany it. Take the word MUCH. The degree of how much can totally be determined by the facial expression alone while the sign stays the same.
Researchers said the glove would need to learn more vocabulary and be able to translate signs faster in order to get a commercial version of it in stores.

Researchers have developed a groundbreaking method of storing and handling valuable biological materials that removes the limitations of refrigerated storage. The novel method has potential applications in healthcare and scientific research.
Biological materials that come from human cells, like enzymes, proteins, and antibodies, are crucial to developing new medicines and diagnostic tests. And they’re fragile. Extremely temperature- sensitive, they require a constant temperature during storage, handling, and transportation. If not stored or handled correctly, these materials will be inactive, which can be costly.
Most biological materials are stored as liquids or freeze- dried powders and kept at low temperatures for the duration of their shelf life. This is achieved through a complex integrated system of refrigerators and freezers known as the cold chain. This requires a significant investment in equipment and infrastructure, making it expensive to maintain, and makes the cold chain prone to shipping delays, power outages, equipment failure and human error.
Inspired from the home medicine cabinet（储藏柜）, where medications are stored in the form of liquids, powder- filled capsules, and tablets, researchers at California Polytechnic State University have developed a new storage platform based on the humble table t that would enable biological materials to be compressed（压缩）into a solid state.
Tablets provide advantages to the storage and handling of bio- materials that the cold chain doesn’t. For one thing, they can be stored at room temperature. And, when they’re required, the table t can be dissolved in water. “Our inn ovation makes storing and using bio- materials as straightforward as an effervescent tablet（泡腾片）. Just drop it into water, mix, and it’s ready to go,” said the researcher of the study.
The researchers say their new tablet- based storage and handling method is easy to use and doesn’t require special training, making it suitable for many applications, They also see potential uses beyond just improving the storage and handling of biological materials. By modifying（修改）the table t coatings, this solid- state storage platform could withstand extreme conditions like heat, humidity, and chemicals. These changes might eventually allow injectable medications, such as insulin, to be taken orally.

It just took him longer— that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish.
