Next day, Tom and Huck had an important talk about the money they had seen. Huck said someone else must have taken it from Indian Joe’s room in the hotel.
“Huck, I bet the money is in the cave! Will you go there with me and get it out ”
“I will if we get in and don’t get lost.”
“That’s no problem. There’s an entrance that only I know about.”
“Let’s start right away, Tom.”
“All right. We need some supplies: some bread and meat, some bags, some ropes and matches.”
The boys borrowed a rowing-boat and went down the river. They entered the secret hole and crawled(爬)to the far end of the tunnel(隧道). They tied their ropes to a rock and moved on with them. They soon got to the place where Tom saw Indian Joe that night.
“Now I’ll show you something, Huck. Look as far around the corner as you can. Do you see what is drawn with candle smoke on the wall of the cave ”
“It’s a cross!”
“That’s where I saw Indian Joe.”
The boys went carefully over to the place. They found a small bed of blankets by a large rock but there was no money-box.
“Look, Huck. There are footprints and some candle wax(蜡)on this side of the rock, but not on the other sides. I’m sure the money is under the rock. I’m going to dig.”
Tom took out his knife and started digging. Ten centimeters down he hit wood. He lifted the piece of wood and found a large hole in the ground. They climbed inside the hole and followed a narrow path. They turned a corner, and Tom screamed,
“My goodness, Huck, look here!”
It was the treasure box.
“At last, we find it!” said Huck, running his hands through the coins.
“Hey, Tom, we’re rich!”
“Let me see if I can lift it.”
It weighed about twenty-five kilos. It was too heavy for the boys to carry.
“I thought so,” he said. “I was right to bring the little bags.”
The money was soon in the bags and the boys lifted them out of the hole and carried them out of the cave to the riverbank. Then they got into the boat and rowed back up to the village as it got dark.

When I was growing up, I had an old neighbour, Dr. Gibbs. He didn’t look like any doctor I’d ever known. He never invited us to play in his yard, but he was a very kind person.
When Dr. Gibbs wasn’t saving lives, he was planting trees. He owned a large field and wanted to make it a forest.
The good doctor had some interesting ideas about planting trees. He never watered his new trees. Once I asked why. He said that watering plants spoiled(惯坏)them, and that if you watered them, each baby tree would grow weaker and weaker. So you had to make things difficult for them and clear away the weaker trees early on.
He talked about how watering trees made for shallow(浅的)roots, and how trees that weren’t watered had to grow deep roots in search of water under the earth by themselves. Deep roots were very important.
So he never watered his trees. He’d planted an oak and, instead of watering it every morning, he’d beaten it with a, rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree’s attention.
Dr. Gibbs died several years after I left home. Every now and then, I walk by his house and look at the trees that I watched him plant about twenty-five years ago. They’re very big and strong now. I planted some trees a few years back and watched them for a whole summer. After two years of too much care, they shake a lot whenever a cold wind blows.
Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. Mostly I pray(祈祷)that their lives will be easy. But lately I’ve been thinking that it’s time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to face difficulties. There’s always a cold wind blowing somewhere, so what we need to do is to pray for roots that reach deep into the brave heart, so when the rain fall and the winds blow, we can face them strongly and not be beaten down.
57.We know from the reading the doctor ______.
A.didn’t know how to plant trees at all
B.wasn’t good at his own medical job
C.had his own ways of caring for trees
D.had nothing to do but plant trees
58.When Dr. Gibbs said “…clear away the weaker trees early on.” he meant that ______.
A.the weak trees would be easily discovered at the beginning
B.he would choose the weak trees to water earlier
C.the weak trees would be sent to his patients later
D.he would not plant weak trees so early any more
59.The writer wants to change his prayer, hoping that ______.
A.his trees will be stronger than Dr. Gibbs’
B.his trees will not be beaten down
C.his sons will be better at planting trees
D.his sons will be able to face difficulties
60.Which is the best title for the reading
A.Watering Trees B.Growing Roots
C.A Doctor and his Neighbour D.Father and his children
