Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing. A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They found that miscommunication was always possible, even over something as simple as“yes”and“no”.
On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren’t paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked,“Do you have cold drinks ” The woman there didn’t say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows(眉毛), which in Micronesia means“yes”.
Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was famous for its cabbage. She asked the waiter,“Do you have cabbage today ” He nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a no d means“no”.
Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again. they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people no d and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean“yes” or“no”.

The time to form a new habit depends on the person, the habit itself, the environment, and the motivation(动机). Generally speaking, 60 days is good enough for getting a new habit formed, but some habits could take twice as long. Some habits will never be formed no matter how much time passes. Even a habit that takes months or years to form can still be broken finally.
Becoming an early riser was really challenging. I struggled with this habit for years to manage to form it. I do break this habit now and then, usually by choice to experience something different for a while. In the past 90 days, I have stayed in bed past 5 am perhaps only two or three times. It takes me less than a week to be back with it. Remembering the benefits surely helps.
In my 20s I was too impatient with many habits. If I couldn’t get something working in a few weeks, I’d often drop it and try something else. Now that I’m in my late 40s, I have learned to think in a more practical way. I know that even if it takes many months or years to form a new habit, I am sure the habit could bring benefits for many years. It doesn’t take me too long to think of carrying out the new habit, I just get it started. When you think about a habit that you have stuck to for many years, who cares if it took a few weeks or six months to form it
Don’t worry so much about how long it takes to form a habit. Instead, consider which habits could improve the quality of your life so that they are worthy of six months to get them formed. When a habit forms at last, it feels uncomfortable not to do it, and your day doesn’t feel complete without it.
28. What can we infer(推断)from the first paragraph
A. We have to keep the habits once formed. B. Most habits can be formed quickly.
C. We need sixty days to form a new habit. D. The time to form habits differs greatly.
29. Why does the writer break the habit of getting up early sometimes
A. He likes sleeping in bed for a while. B. He wants to try something different.
C. He prepares breakfast for the family. D. He is afraid to wake up his family.
30. What does the writer think more about the habit when he is in his forties
A. The development of the habit. B. The expense of the habit.
C. The benefits of the habit. D. The limitation of the habit.
31. In which part of a magazine is this text most probably taken from
A. Education. B. Technology. C. Tourism. D. Literature.
D
In February, when a terrible earthquake hit Türkiye and Syria, hundreds of thousands of children watched their world fall apart.
More than 50,000 people died in Türkiye alone. Homes and schools were damaged or destroyed. Families moved to makeshift(临时替代的)“container cities,” often far from friends. Many children were affected emotionally. According to a UN report, more than 5.4million children across the quake zone are at risk of developing mental diseases. “I’ve spoken to many families who say ‘I don’t recognize my own children,’” says Ceyda Yelkalan, the communications manager of Save the Children Türkiye.
“What these children need to heal(康复),” Yelkalan says, “is a place where they can focus on just being kids.” That means creating new safe spaces where children can do something fun, like playing soccer. Through “Pitches of Hope” ---a project created by Mastercard and put into action by Save the Children -- Yelkalan and her teammates are building those spaces. Throughout southern Türkiye, they are restoring soccer pitches(球场)that were destroyed and inviting kids to join soccer- related activities, believing in the healing power of sports.
Mehmet Ali Akil, who is Save the Children’s child protection coordinator(协调人), and his teammates developed a series of soccer- related games that encourage team work and improve mental well- being. Programs like Pitches of Hope are much needed, he says, since children can, and often do, become separated from their family and friends after disasters. So he developed activities that focus on increasing communication and encouraging respectful and kind behavior.
One girl said that she hadn’t played soccer before because she thought it was a game for men. “Now she’s saying ‘I have more courage,’” Yelkalan says. “These children are learning life skills and the importance of equality and inclusion of every child. They’ re getting away from the worries of daily life and making new friendships.”
32. What does paragraph 2mainly tell us about the earthquake
A. The cause of it. B. What results it brought.
C. What people thought about it. D. The rescue efforts following it.
33. What does Yelkalan expect of Pitches of Hope
A. It can teach children how to stay safe during an earthquake.
B. It can improve children’s sporting performance.
C. It can heal the children’s physical wounds.
D. It can offer children a world of joy.
34. What is one purpose of the games developed by Akil and his teammate
A. To change the children’s bad study habits.
B. To teach children how to lead a sports team.
C. To encourage children to connect with each other.
D. To give children chances to get together with their family.
35. What does the author want to show by mentioning the girl in the last paragraph
A. The limitations of the project. B. The success of the project.
C. The details of the project. D. The future of the project.

My Parents and I had been planning my brother’s birthday party since the beginning of March. Johnny would be six years old a week later. My mom was going to bake a special chocolate cake. I wondered what I could do to make my brother’s birthday special.
I knew my parents had already bought a present for me to give to Johnny, but I wanted to buy him something I had chosen myself and with the money I had saved. After giving it some thoughts. I wanted to buy him the paint- by- number kit(数字涂色小套装)I had seen at the store around the corner.
I decided to empty my coin jar and see how much money I had saved. However, I was disappointed to find there was much less than I had imagined. “I only have about three dollars,” I said to myself. The set cost more than I had saved.
Suddenly a“great” idea came to me. I went into my parents’ bedroom where my dad kept loose change(零钱)in a box. I carefully counted out what I needed to make up the difference(弥补差额).I’m sure Dad won’t mind just this once, I thought.
However, I was soon overcome by guilt(负罪感).Even though there was no one else in the bedroom, I felt like I was being watched. Mom was always telling us about the importance of honesty. Maybe my plan wasn’t such a great idea after all, I thought.
However, I ran to the store. Once I got there, I took the paint- by- number kit from the shelf.
“Can I help you, young lady ” the saleswoman asked.
“No. I’m just looking, thank you,”I said.
“That’s a really nice paint kit. We sell a lot of them and, as you can see, that’s the last one,” she said.

作文一
One possible version:
Dear David,
I am more than delighted to hear from you.
When I entered senior high school, I found it a little difficult to get used to the school life. The subject s we are learning are obviously more difficult. Besides, with endless homework to do, we almost have no time for exercise and other activities. Fortunately, the teachers and classmates are all helpful and kind. It is with their help that I have overcome my fear and made great progress. So I think we should trust our teachers and classmates, who won’t disappoint us.
How about your school life I’m looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua
作文二
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
I nodded my head in agreement, with my mind racing. “Whether to buy or not ” I was wondering. My hungry eyes rested on the paint- by- number kit. “Could you help me keep it for a week ” I begged anxiously with my cheeks burning. Much to my surprise, she nodded her head in agreement. I turned around, walked out of the store and headed home. I slid into the bedroom, stood on my tiptoe and put back the change one by one. In the meantime, I could hear my heart pounding.
Paragraph 2:
I would just have to wait until I saved the extra money I needed. Apart from doing housework for my parents, I applied for a job in the community so that I could earn more money. In the following week, I delivered newspapers and fed pets for the neighbors from morning till night. Tired as I was, I still enjoyed myself. Having got enough money, I went to the corner store and bought the special gift. Never did my brother think that he would receive such a nice gift. Seeing the big smile on his face, I was floating on air.
