Most adults retreat (后退) into a personal, quiet world inside their heads when they are reading, but we may be missing out on some vital benefits when we do this.
For much of history, reading was a fairly noisy activity. On clay tablets written in ancient Iraq and Syria some 4,000 years ago, the commonly used words for “to read” literally meant “to cry out” or “to listen”. “I am sending a very urgent message,” says one letter from this period. “Listen to this tablet. If it is appropriate, have the king listen to it.”
Today, silent reading is the norm. The majority of us bottle the words in our heads as if sitting in the quiet space of a library. Reading out loud is largely reserved for bedtime stories and performances.
But a growing body of research suggests that we may be missing out by reading only with the voices inside our minds. Colin MacLeod, a psychologist at the University of Waterloo in Canada, and his colleagues have found that people consistently remember words and texts better if they read them aloud than if they read them silently. This memory-boosting effect of reading aloud is particularly strong in children, but it works for older people, too. “It’s beneficial throughout the age range,” says MacLeod.
MacLeod has named this phenomenon the “production effect”. And it has been replicated (复制) in numerous studies spanning more than a decade. In one study in Australia, a group of 7- to 10-year-olds were presented with a list of words and asked to read some silently, and others aloud. Afterwards, they correctly recognized 87% of the words they’d read aloud, but only 70% of the silent ones. In another study, adults aged 67 to 88 were given the same task — reading words either silently or aloud. They were able to recall 27% of the words they had read aloud, but only 10% of those they’d read silently.
The production effect is strongest if we read aloud ourselves. But listening to someone else read can benefit memory in other ways. In a study led by researchers at the University of Perugia in Italy, students read extracts from novels to a group of elderly people with dementia (痴呆) over a total of 60 sessions. The listeners performed better in memory tests after the sessions than before, possibly because the stories made them draw on their own memories and imagination, and helped them sort past experiences into sequences. “It seems that actively listening to a story leads to more intense and deeper information processing,” the researchers concluded.
In a time when our interactions with others and the information we take in are all too transient (短暂的), perhaps it is worth making a bit more time for reading out loud. Perhaps you even gave it a try with this article, and enjoyed hearing it in your own voice
24. Why does the author mention the ancient clay tablets
A. To tell the history of silent reading. B. To indicate the benefits of reading.
C. To explain the ancient meaning of reading. D. To illustrate the ancient way of reading.
25. What has MacLeod found out

B. Reading aloud can benefit people regardless of age.
C. Reading aloud is no longer popular in modern life.
D. We can improve our memory by writing down words.
26. What will happen when we listen to a story actively
A. We will process the information deeply.
B. We will achieve little production effect.
C. We will avoid suffering mental diseases.
D. We will likely reflect on our past experiences.
27. What would be the most suitable title for the text
A. The best way to improve our memory B. We should do silent reading properly
C. The surprising power of reading out loud D. We should encourage kids to read out loud
C
Last weekend, I said goodbye to another dear old friend. We had 12 fine years together, but our relationship was becoming dysfunctional(不正常的). Unwanted emissions and serious health problems were the final straw, leaving me with no choice but to make a trip to the knacker’s(收废汽车者的)yard.
I am now car-free for the first time in 20 years, and it feels strange. When I gave up meat, I did so mainly for environmental reasons, and I didn’t miss it at all. I would like to say the same about my car, but I can’t. It was first and foremost a financial decision: keeping the old car on the road was getting too expensive.
But doing the right thing for the wrong reasons is still doing the right thing—I now have a chance to rethink how I move myself and my family around, and can try to find a more environmentally friendly means of transport.
Going car-free is, I think, a lifestyle change that many of us are going to make over the next few years, as car ownership becomes increasingly unnecessary, expensive and socially unacceptable.
However, it is easier said than done. Now my car is gone. I still need to get around. But how I already cycle to work and use public transport when appropriate. But there are some occasions when a car seems to be the only way.
I won’t buy one: I have joined a car-share program and will use taxis more often. I will hire a car if I need to drive a long distance. But then I am still travelling in fossil-fuelled cars(燃油汽车), like when I quit meat and ended up eating more cheese. I fear I may have swapped one environmental problem for another.
I am also afraid to think about the ultimate fate of my car. I have just offloaded more than a ton of metal, plastic, rubber, fabric, electronics, oil and petrol that will end up in a landfill. There are millions of similar vehicles in the UK alone that will have to go somewhere.
Maybe I am overthinking it. According to Charlie Wilson, a climate scientist at the UK’s Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, getting rid of a private car is no doubt a positive step to reduce CO2 emissions.
He points to research by the OECD’s International Transport Forum. “They showed that moving from a private vehicle fleet(车队)to a shared vehicle fleet can greatly cut the number of vehicles you need to deliver the mobility that we need and want. If that vehicle fleet is electrified, you can also bring CO2 emissions close to zero.”
So in other words, just get rid of your car.
28. What do we know about the author’s car
A. It was old. B. It was green.
C. It was his first car. D. It was a second-hand car.
29. What do the author’s giving up meat and saying goodbye to his car have in common
A. He did both for the wrong reasons.
B. He thinks both help him save money.
C. He considers both are right decisions.
D. He did both out of concern for the environment.
30. What does the author fear
A. He may have to spend more on travel.
B. His lifestyle might be changed completely.
C. He might get bored with public transportation.
D. His decision may fail to help the environment.
31. What does Charlie Wilson say
A. It is wise to do away with old private cars.
B. It is very easy to deal with old private cars.
C. Electric cars are the solution to traffic problems.
D. The OECD plays a key role in promoting car-sharing.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Living with Parents after Graduation
In many countries, young adults prefer to live with their parents even after finding jobs. This choice comes with its pros and cons.
Firstly, living under the same roof can significantly save their cost of living. Additionally, having parents nearby provides a sense of security and emotional support. However, drawbacks to this option are also obvious. The young may rely too much on their parents, thus missing out on the opportunities to learn basic life skills and fail to adapt to the constantly changing world.
In my opinion, living with parents can be a temporary choice shortly after young people graduate. But in the long term, they should be encouraged to move out so that they can acquire problem-solving skills and learn to assume responsibility.

M: No, I’m not, I was at Westerley College until last year but now I’ve got a job at Jefferson’s steel factory. Someone told me it was possible to join, even if I wasn’t. W: That’s right, it is.
M: Could you tell me what I have to do to join
W: Well, you’ll need to come in to the library and fill out some forms. You’ll also need to bring two passport photos with you. We also need two documents for ID, so a driver’s license would be fine.
M: I’ve got that and what else A credit card
W: No, it needs to have your address on it.
M: Shall I bring a bank statement, would that do
W: That’ll be fine.
M: Good. How many books can I borrow
W: We allow twelve items borrowed at any one time if you’re a student. However, it’s only eight items for members of the public.
M: Fine. And how long can I have them
W: Well you can have both novels and reference books for four weeks, which isn’t bad really.
