Dear Claire,
How is everything going I’m willing to help you with the upcoming contest
organized by our school. It’s great to see your interest in Chinese culture!
Here are a few suggestions for you. Firstly, you can start by familiarizing
yourself with some famous ancient Chinese poets like Li Bai, Du Fu and Wang Wei.
To enhance your understanding of their styles and themes, you can use online
resources to learn about the dynasties when they lived and their life experiences.
What’s more, memorize a few popular poems and practice reciting them, which will
help you appreciate the beauty of the language and improve your pronunciation.
Practice makes perfect! Wish you all the best in the contest!
Yours,
Li Hua

Finally, Jeffrey saw a tiny figure sitting on the bench at the spot. Jeffrey felt
relieved to see the girl safe and sound. Trying to calm himself, Jeffrey decided to talk
to her gently. He inquired about her name and why she had left home. “I was going to
Grandma’s house, but mom wouldn’t let me go.” Sarah replied, swinging one of her
feet and looking at him with her innocent and pure eyes. “Your parents are searching
for you, and they’ll be here soon,” he assured her.
A few minutes later, the police and another car approached. A woman got out of
the vehicle and rushed toward Sarah. The little girl got up and ran to her, yelling,
“Mommy!” The police officers approached Jeffrey and he told them the entire story.

Sarah’s parents thanked him for what he had done. From then on, Jeffrey helped
anyone short on cash get on his bus, and he always watched out for the kids that were
alone because they needed someone like him to do the right job.

W: Excuse me, I’m having some trouble with the ATM. It has my bank card and
won’t give it back.
M: OK. I’ll call the manager. He can help you with that. Please return to the machine
that has your card. He will join you in a few minutes.
Text 2
M: Sue, I’ve just been told the date of the play has been changed from the 15th to the
16th.
W: Are you serious Yesterday I was told it was going to be the 17th.
M: The 17th is a Sunday, so they changed it to a Saturday in the end.
Text 3
W: Have you ever been to a place like this
M: No, but I do like to look at the stars.
W: Good, you’re in for a treat. This is the best place around to get a good look at the
stars. I’m going to fetch the telescope for you. It’s in my car.
Text 4
M: I’m so sad. I don’t know anyone here and I’m homesick. But don’t tell my mum
and dad. They might be worried.
W: Oh, I won’t. They’d probably take the next flight to New York and come to see
you if I do that.
Text 5
W: Have you seen the new books that they got for the science class They are much
better than the new math books.
M: Yes, I have. But I actually don’t like them. Why do they talk so much about old
scientists
W: That’s what I like the most about them.
Text 6
W: Our manager said that you and your wife like watching movies. Would you like
to see one this weekend
M: Yes, I was thinking of checking out the Sunday movies. They are playing Mary
Poppins there this weekend. You see, I’m a real big fan of classical movies.
W: Oh, that’s perfect. I got these two free tickets that you can use at that theater. My
brother gave them to me.
M: Really That’s very nice of you.
Text 7
W: Jack, close the window in the bathroom. The wind’s getting really strong.
M: Done. We seem to have experienced a whole year’s weather in one day today.
W: I couldn’t agree more—this morning I could hardly see across the road because of
the thick dark clouds.

M: Yeah, but at lunchtime I sat in the park enjoying the sunshine. Then on the way
home from work, I got caught in the rain and waswet to the skin. I felt so cold.
W: And now we’ve got this. England in April—how changeable!
Text 8
M: What are you reading, Jennifer
W: I’m reading an event about paper cutting. The woman named Abigail has been a
creative papercut artist for many years. She wants to hold an event in our city.
M: Where will it take place
W: At the café on the Square, Barnoldswick. And it’ll begin at 1:30 pm and end at
2:30 pm on July 21. She’ll share basic paper cutting skills and techniques. And
then participants will have the opportunity to have a go themselves on practice
sheets.
M: So do you want to go
W: Yes. I’ve always been interested in paper cutting. And I want to teach my students
after I learn how to do it. Now I finally have an opportunity, so I’ll definitely go.
Will you join me
M: Sorry, Jennifer, but I’d rather watch a football game that day.
Text 9
M: Honey, what’s all our stuff doing in the yard
W: It’s a clean-up sale. For only $19.95, we can put a two-line ad in Newsday for
seven days. And with over two million readers, we’ll get results fast.
M:But if Newsday is having a clean-up sale, why does our yard look like a market
W: Because there’s never been a better time for us to turn the things we don’t use
into cash we can use.
M: You mean the jewelry, furniture and exercise equipment
W: Even your old guitar.
M: Two lines, seven days, for only $19.95. Are you sure
W: Of course I’m sure. I called Bob.
M: Who’s Bob
W: He’s a sales consultant there. He was really nice and helpful. He told me to call
him whenever I had a problem with the ad.
M: More than 50% off, and friendly service. Newsday does have all we need.
W: Yeah. So could you help me with the ad if you’re free
M: OK.

W: Do you enjoy watching comedies Then why not come and see what’s happening at
Comedy Hour
Comedy Hour owns comedy clubs in several countries that are run just for people
aged 13–20. They’re just as familiar with working in adult comedy clubs as they
are working with children.
The Comedy Hour company was set up by John Winterson. In fact, his act quickly
became so popular that he soon found lots of other comedians who wanted to join
his company.
If you’re having a party at home, Comedy Hour can come and perform for you
3

there at the party. Your very own comedian will also help you to tell your guests
some jokes and silly stories and they can join in, too, if they want. It’ll be fun and
very different from any party you’ve ever had before.
Here at Comedy Hour, it’s not just about the adults telling jokes. We also offer
young people the chance to perform. But we’veyet tofind someone who can do
that without preparation, so we’ve set up the world’s first Comedy Classes to teach
young people how to tell jokes on stage. At the moment our classes are only
monthly, but we’re planning to start a number of others over the coming year.
So what are you waiting for Come and join Comedy Hour.

Travel WiFi is a global company with a simple mission: to keep you connected
to the Internet while traveling. They do this by providing WiFi hotspot devices (for
rent or purchase) that can be used on 6 different continents.
About the WiFi devices
The Pocket Travel WiFi devices are the size and shape of a small smartphone.
The standard Hotspot Rental and the Sapphire 2 (for purchase) share a similar design
with one mini-USB charging port. However, it’s important to note that these devices
are not waterproof. When fully charged, they should last around 12 hours with fairly
regular WiFi use. Additionally, the Sapphire 2 model features indicator lights
displaying signal strength and battery life.
Renting VS Buying the travel WiFi device
The cost of purchasing a travel WiFi device is $89-$109, and then you pay on top
of that for data packages ($29.9 for 20 GB in a month). Most frequent travelers buy
their own device for convenience.
The rental price is based on the total number of days that you’ll keep the device
and how much data you want to use each day. Daily rents range from $6.9 for 1GB,
$12.9 for 2GB to $16.9 for 3GB. Week pass ($45.9) with no data limit is also a good
choice for short-term travelers.
21. What is an advantage of the travel WiFi device
A. It is resistant to water. B. It is quick to charge.
C. It is convenient to carry. D. It is excellent in signal.
22. For a 7-day UK trip, what’s the minimum rent for a WiFi device
A. $6.9 B. $29.9 C. $45.9 D. $48.3
23. Who is most likely to show interest in the device
A. A person who will travel abroad.
B. A diver who is training off the coast.
C. A student who likes surfing the Internet.
D. A doctor who needs the latest information.

Shanghai residents passing through the city’s eastern Huangpu District earlier
this month might be surprised to catch an unusual sight: a “walking” building. An
85-year-old primary school has been lifted off the ground — in its entirety — and
3
{#{QQABAQwAogioABIAAQgCAQ0CCAMQkgGACQgOBBAMoAAACRFABAA=}#}
relocated using new technology called the “walking machine”.
In the city’s latest effort to preserve historic structures, engineers attached nearly
200 mobile supports under the five-storey building. The supports act like robotic legs.
They’re split into two groups which alternately (交替地) rise up and down, imitating
the human stride. Attached sensors help control how the building moves forward.
In recent decades, China’s rapid modernization has seen many historic buildings
razed to clear land for grand skyscrapers and office buildings. But there has been
growing concern about the architectural heritage lost as a result of tear-down across
the country. Shanghai has arguably been China’s most progressive city when it comes
to heritage preservation. The survival of a number of 1930s buildings in the famous
Bund district and 19th-century “shikumen” (or “stone gate”) houses in the renovated
Xintiandi neighborhood have offered examples of how to give old buildings new life.
The city also has a track record of relocating old buildings. In 2018, the city relocated
a 90-year-old building in Hongkou District, in what was then considered to be
Shanghai’s most complex relocation project to date.
The Lagena Primary School, which weighs 7,600 tons, posed a new challenge —
it’s T-shaped, whereas previously relocated structures were square or rectangular.
Experts and technicians met to discuss possibilities and test a number of different
technologies before deciding on the “walking machine”.
Citizens welcome and appreciate the efforts made by the municipal government
to protect these old buildings. In their eyes, not only are the old buildings part of their
memory but they also represent part of Shanghai’s history.
24. What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. A “walking building” can often be seen in Shanghai.
B. The 85-year-old building is called “walking machine”.
C. The 85-year-old building is the first building to be relocated.
D. Engineers relocated the building without breaking it into parts.
25. Which are excluded from the project of relocating the building
A. Mobile supports B. Robotic legs.
C. Attached sensors. D. Technical engineers.
26. The author shows Shanghai’s success in protecting historic buildings by ______.
A. listing figures B. giving reasons
C. making comparisons D. providing examples
27. What is probably the best title for the passage
A. Many old buildings in Shanghai have been relocated.
B. Shanghai is making great efforts to preserve old buildings.
C. A 5-storey building in Shanghai “walks” to a new location.

{#{QQABAQwAogioABIAAQgCAQ0CCAMQkgGACQgOBBAMoAAACRFABAA=}#}
D. Citizens in Shanghai are shocked to see buildings relocated.

Based on a study, dogs’ brains cannot distinguish words that differ by a single
speech sound, such as “dig” versus “dog”, or “sit” versus “set”. This makes dogs
similar to human infants, who also can’t distinguish between words with similar
sounds. But around age 14 to 20 months, babies typically start to learn that every
sound in a word matters (i.e. that “dog” and “dig” are different words), and this allows
them to proliferate their vocabulary, the authors said.
It appears that dogs never grasp these distinctions. “Dogs might not attend to all
details of speech sound when they listen to words,” study senior author Attila Andics,
of the Department of Ethology at E tv s Loránd University in Hungary, said in a
statement. “Further research could reveal whether this could be a reason that disables
dogs from acquiring a numerous vocabulary”.
For the study, published Tuesday (Dec. 8) in the journal Royal Society Open
Science, the researchers monitored the brain waves of 17 very good dogs using a
technique called electroencephalography (EEG) (脑电图). The study is one of the first
to use EEG on awake dogs that didn’t have any specific training. The dogs visited the
lab with their owners, and once the dogs got used to the new environment, they sat
down on a carpet with their owners, and the researchers attached electrodes (电极) to
the dogs’ heads with tape.
The dogs’ brains could quickly discriminate the words that they knew from the
words that sounded very different (“sit” vs. “bep”). But their brains seemed to make
no difference between the words they knew and the words that differed by only a
single speech sound (“sit” vs. “sut”). Researchers have seen a similar pattern in
infants younger than 14 months.
It’s not that the dogs can’t hear the different sounds — studies have found that
dogs can distinguish individual speech sounds (such as “d,” “o” and “g”). But they
may have “attentional and processing biases (偏差)” that prevent them from attending
to all the sounds in a word, they said. Future studies with a large number of subjects
(实验对象) and more trials of words are needed to confirm the findings, they said.
28. The underlined word in Paragraph1 is closest in meaning to _______.
A. change flexibly B. grasp easily
C. increase greatly D. distinguish clearly
29. What does Paragraph 3 mainly intend to tell the readers
A. The principle applied in the experiment
B. The real background of the experiment
5
{#{QQABAQwAogioABIAAQgCAQ0CCAMQkgGACQgOBBAMoAAACRFABAA=}#}
C. The whole procedure of the experiment
D. The method employed in the experiment
30. According to the finding, if a dog knew the word “trip”, which of the following
words would it misunderstand when hearing them
A. Tread. B. Trick. C. Shirt. D.Scrip.
31. What will the researchers do to draw a further conclusion
A. Rid dogs of the attentional and processing biases.
B. Integrate means to make the result more scientific.
C. Test different types of dogs to avoid one-sidedness.
D. Observe more participants distinguishing more words.

I recently read The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks, a psychologist who introduces
the concept of different “zones” in life and work. These zones describe varying levels
of ability and fulfillment (满足感) in our activities. The Zone of Disability involves
tasks you’re not good at; the Zone of Ability includes tasks you’re capable of but find
unsatisfying. The Zone of Excellence is where you stand out but might feel a little
discouraged, and finally, the Zone of Genius is where your unique talents and
passions shine, leading to deep fulfillment.
Curious to identify my Zone of Genius, I took a related test. To my surprise, it
turns out my Zone of Genius is “Networking.” I even considered framing (装裱) the
results and hanging them over the fireplace. This situation is particularly amusing,
because I am often perceived as an introvert (内向的人) — some would say I tend to
escape from social contacts. That makes me occasionally in low spirits and doubtful
about my ability to socialize. What explains this contradiction
Perceptions of introversion largely depend on cultural expectations, with different
societies defining “introverted” and “extroverted” behaviors differently. In the United
States, extroversion is often idealized. In contrast, in some East Asian cultures, such
as Japan and China, value is associated with introversion. Differences also exist
between Northern and Southern Europe. Research shows that the level of introversion
differs widely across cultures, making it challenging to label introversion universally.
Contrary to the opinion that introverts are shy, research suggests they possess
unique skills and strengths. The Harvard Grant Study shows that introverts tend to
have fewer but deeper and more meaningful relationships. Another misunderstanding
is that introverts do not make good leaders. However, studies show that introverted
leaders can be just as effective — if not more so — than the extroverts.
6
{#{QQABAQwAogioABIAAQgCAQ0CCAMQkgGACQgOBBAMoAAACRFABAA=}#}
It’s vital to distinguish between introversion and shyness. Shyness is a fear of
social judgment. However, introverts can be highly social, particularly in small groups
or one-on-one conversations. Their preference for meaningful interaction over small
talk makes them experts at forming deep, lasting relationships. So, the next time you
meet an introvert, remember that their quiet behavior may hide a world of deep
thoughts, keen insights, and powerful leadership potential.
32. If your Zone of Excellence is “English”, it may mean ________.
A. you are in trouble completing English assignments
B. you can display your talent in English to the fullest
C. your mind always wander off when learning English
D. you have a grasp of English but feel upset occasionally
33. Why did the author consider framing the results and hanging them
A. The results were in line with his belief.
B. The results proved his ability in social life.
C. The results confirmed his nature of introversion.
D. The results reminded him to avoid social contacts.
34. According to the text, to tell whether a person is an introvert, you should take
________ into consideration.
A. his birthplace B. his inner value
C. his cultural background D. his education level
35. According to the text, which of the following is TRUE about the introverts
A. They can develop lasting relationships with others.
B. They fear deeper and more meaningful relationships.
C. They have advantages over the extroverts in workplace.
D. They often hide their unique potential in front of others.

One of the most important elements of successful job hunting is the job interview.
36 In order to give yourself an edge over others applying for the job you want,
it is important to create a solid impression during the job interview.
Because what you say during an interview is so important, there are two rules to
remember. One is to present yourself in a favourable way and stress your areas of
excellence. However, don’t exaggerate(夸张); tell the truth. 37 Notice the
interviewer’s interests and relate your comments to them.
7
{#{QQABAQwAogioABIAAQgCAQ0CCAMQkgGACQgOBBAMoAAACRFABAA=}#}
38 Don't be afraid to ask for a second interview if you need time to
gather information that will be more useful in the second interview. Most interviewers
will appreciate your questions and your ability to listen and respond.
Each of us has sensitive areas, which could refer to your lack of an academic
degree, a long period of unemployment, or lack of work experience if you are entering
a new field. 39 If you believe that this area presents a real barrier to a job
offer, you could be communicating this doubt to the interviewer. Many times,
however, an interviewer will ignore these sensitive areas if you have a confident,
positive attitude.
The job interview is an important part of the job search because the attitude and
impression you project can make the interviewer feel “with you” or “against you”.
40 Interviewers have the intelligence to recognize genuine enthusiasm and
interest.
A. Answer sensitive questions briefly and positively.
B. Show confidence in yourself and your ability to do the job.
C. Some people lose job opportunities because of talking too much.
D. If unsure of job requirements, ask questions to see if you're qualified.
E. Remember that you have the power to create a favourable impression.
F. There are thousands of people entering new careers and searching for jobs.
G. Second, listen carefully and get involved in what the interviewer is saying.

“No, little girl. You can’t get in without the money.” Jeffrey, the bus driver, told a
little girl who wanted to get on the bus but only had a few pennies. She must have
been around seven years old, and Jeffrey wasn’t in the mood to deal with
unaccompanied children that day.
“Please, sir. I want to visit my grandmother,” the little girl begged. “Then go to
ask your parents for the money and come back next time,” Jeffrey replied and
gestured with his hand for the girl to get out. She finally left the bus with her

shoulders lowered. Jeffrey saw her sit down at the bus stop and drove off.
He finished his route and went home for the lunch, greeting his wife, Greta, and
sitting down on the couch to rest. When he browsed his Facebook posts, an image
caught his attention. A picture was shared of the little girl he had just turned away a
few hours earlier. The word “Missing” was written on top of the image. He learned
that the girl had disappeared a day ago, and her parents were desperately trying to find
her.
“Dear! What have I done ” he asked himself, standing up and going to the front
door. When Greta asked where he was going, Jeffrey said, “Greta! Quick! Call 911
and this number,” showing her the picture of the girl. “I saw this girl at a bus stop
earlier, but I turned her away because she didn’t have enough money. I’m going to
find her, but please make those calls.” Having told her where the bus stop was, he
went out.
Jeffrey rushed to his car, speeding to the bus stop. Hopefully, the girl was smart
enough to stay in one place. He couldn’t believe how careless he had been earlier. She
was a little girl all alone. As he drove to the bus stop, Jeffrey decided to be more
careful in the future, especially when it came to children.
Finally, Jeffrey saw a tiny figure sitting on the bench at the spot. _______________
