Unit3 A Day Out(reading)

Teaching objectives:
1. To develop students’ reading skills (skimming and scanning)
2. To get useful information from the text
3. To guess the meaning of words and expressions in the text
4. To mind map the whole passage and apply it to the writing
Teaching Steps:
I. Lead-in
Show several pictures of Kaifeng students are very familiar with. Ask them where it is, then lead in the tourism city--Kaifeng and today’s topic travelling. Ask students to talk about the tourism city and their hometown Kaifeng, then show a video and several typical pictures to help them think about the key words such as wonderful, amazing, a fantastic place for tourists, a famous city for its delicious snacks, a place of interest and so on. Next lead in world famous places to travel and the world park.
II. Background information introduction
From the form of the passage, we can see it is a letter Linda wrote to her mother.
So figuring out who Linda is and why she wrote the letter to her mom is very important. From the title, students can know Linda is an American girl who came to China to visit her cousin Kitty. During her visit, they went to the world park. She had a wonderful time there, so she wrote a letter to share her trip with her mother.
III. Fast reading
Read the passage quickly(scan or skim), and find out the following information:
How long did it take them to get to the world park
How did they go to the world park
What is the Eiffel Tower made of
Who made a special home page for the trip
IV. Careful reading
Read the passage carefully this time. While reading, mind map Linda’s whole trip including when, weather, how(how long, how was the traffic, how did she like the trip), what ( models, parade)
Lead students to make a mind map, then retell the whole letter without looking at the reading material.
V. Imagine Linda came to Kaifeng, you arranged a day out. List your plans in a chart and after that you shared your trip on your friend circle.
Give students an example, then ask them to list the plans in a chart. Give out a piece of paper to each group, and tell them to suppose the paper is their friend circle, Draw the photos they want to share on the paper and write down something they want. Then introduce the friend circle they make to the classmates.
VI. Homework
Suppose you're Linda, your cousin is going to America to visit you in the summer vacation.Make a plan for your trip.
