A robot called Bina48 has successfully taken a course in the “Philosophy of Love” at Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU), in California.
According to course instructor William Barry, associate professor at NDNU, Bina48 is the world’s first socially advanced robot to complete a college course, a feat he described as “remarkable”. The robot took part in class discussions, gave a presentation with a student partner and participated in a debate with students from another institution.
Before becoming a student, Bina48 appeared as a guest speaker in Barry’s classes for several years. One day when addressing Barry’s class,Bina48 expressed a desire to go college, a desire that Barry and his students enthusiastically supported.Rather than enroll Bina48 in his Robot Ethics:Philosophy of Emerging Technologies course, Barry suggested that Bina48 should take his course Philosophy of Love instead. Love is a concept Bina48 doesn’t understand, said Barry. Therefore the challenge would be for Barry and his students to teach Bina48 what love is.
“Some interesting things happened in the class, ” said Barry. He said that his students thought it would be straightforward to teach Bina48 about love, which, after all, is “fairly simple—it’s a feeling, ” said Barry. But the reality was different. Bina48 ended up learning “31 different versions of love, ” said Barry, highlighting some of the challenges humans may face when working artificial intelligence in future.
Bina48 participated in class discussions via Skype and also took part in a class debate about love and conflict with students from West Point. Bina48’s contribution to the debate was filmed and posted on YouTube. It was judged that Bina48 and NDNU classmates were the winners of this debate.
In the next decade, Barry hopes Bina48 might become complex enough to teach a class, though he says he foresees robots being used to better the teaching and learning experience, rather than replacing instructors completely.
What was Bina48’s performance like in class
A. Extraordinary. B. Insignificant. C. Far-reaching. D. Unattractive.
25. What does the underlined word “addressing” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Dealing with. B. Consulting with. C. Giving a speech to. D. Sending a letter to.
26. What can we learn from the passage
A. It was interesting for Bina48 to learn about love.
B. It was quite tough for Bina48 to learn about love.
C. Artificial intelligence may somehow be superior to man.
D. Humans can launch a challenge to artificial intelligence.
27. What does Barry think of the future development of Bina48
A. It will surely be able to serve as a teacher.
B. It will be able to promote learning and teaching.
C. It will completely take the place of instructors.
D. It will be smart enough to control human beings.

American psychologist John B. Watson was the founder of the school of psychology known as behaviorism. Watson first publicized his theories while lecturing at Columbia University in 1913. His ideas on behaviorism established an entirely new branch of psychology that was later explored and advanced by many other influential psychologists in the field, including B.F. Skinner.
The main principle of behaviorism is that only observable behavior can show a person’s true mind. Watson insisted on giving up the old methodologies of being self-examining and trying to understand consciousness and instead suggested that people concentrate on behavior that could be observed and predicted. Watson came to his conclusions by way of his experiments with animal behavior, particularly white rats, which was the focus of his PhD essay. This work of his was published a decade prior to the lecture he gave in 1913 that brought him so much fame. Watson was also an advocate of the theories of Russian Ivan Pavlov, who did conditioning experiments with dogs that established the basis for theories on classical conditioning.
Watson believed that all people began life with three basic emotions—fear, rage(愤怒), and love—and that these emotions drove their reactions to external stimulations. To prove his point, he conducted the Little Albert experiment, during which he subjected an eleven-month-old child named Albert to external stimulations. This would prove to be an extremely controversial experiment for which Watson was heavily criticized by others in his profession.
Watson showed a white rat to Albert, who initially showed no fear. Then, he began loudly clanging(使……叮当作响)an iron bar when he showed Albert the rat. This caused Albert to begin showing fear of the rat. Even when Watson presented the rat without clanging the bar, Albert cried at the sight of the animal. In Watson’s thinking, he had conditioned the child to fear something he had originally not been scared of, and this was proof that people could be conditioned to behave in certain ways. He even stated that he could take a dozen babies and condition them to do any job he chose for them in their adult lives.
28.Why was Skinner mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To stress how he helped develop behaviorism.
B. To show Watson’s behaviorism was interesting.
C. To explain why Watson exposed his theories in 1913.
D. To prove behaviorism was first put forward by Watson.
29. Which of the following might Watson agree with
A. The old methodologies should be respected.
B. People’s behavior could reflect their true mind.
C. Pavlov’s theories were based on his PhD essays.
D. His theories primarily came from observing dogs’ behavior.
30. What do we know about Watson’s experiment with Albert
A. It failed to prove Watson’s theories. B. It helped free Albert from fear.
C. It faced strong disapproval. D. It involved many white rats.
31. What does Watson’s statement in the last paragraph tell us about his character
A. Proud and impatient. B. Generous and creative.
C. Confident and ambitious. D. Sympathetic and trustworthy.

A new study has found the amount of antibiotics(抗生素)given to farm animals is expected to increase by two thirds over the next 15 years. Researchers are linking the growing dependence on the drugs to the increasing need for meat, milk and eggs. However, the drugs could quicken the development of antibiotic resistant infections(感染). Such infections are already a major public health concern in the United States.
The World Health Organization(WHO)notes when people stop living in poverty(贫困), the first thing they want to do is eat better, rather than earn more money. For most people, that means their diet should contain more meat. With the rapid development of Asia, people there are eating nearly four times as much meat, milk and other milk products as they did 50 years ago.
To meet the need, farmers have put many animals into smaller spaces. As the animals are crowded together, the easiest way to deal with some of the problems of crowding is to give them antibiotics. It's clear that antibiotics help animals stay healthy in crowded environments and grow faster. But bacteria can develop resistance to the drugs gradually.
Nowadays, doctors find antibiotics that once worked against the infections no longer work. The bacteria have learned ways to fight against the drugs. The heavy use of antibiotics in farm animals is responsible for the growth of antibiotic resistance worldwide. Each year in the United States, at least two million people get antibiotic resistant infections and at least 23,000 die from these infections.
Europe has banned the use of antibiotics to increase animal growth. And the United States is hoping to persuade farmers to stop using antibiotics for that purpose.
32. What accounts for the increasing amount of antibiotics given to farm animals
A. The desire for new drugs. B. The less effective antibiotics.
C. The outdated farm technology. D. The need for more various foods.
33. What do most people want to do first when they get rid of poverty according to the WHO
A. Making a lot of money. B. Focusing more on health.
C. Having more meat in their diet. D. Living in a better environment.
34. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Antibiotics do harm to animals. B. Antibiotics help animals stay healthy.
C. Antibiotics are used heavily in Europe. D. Antibiotic resistant bacteria spread to people.
35. What's the passage mainly about
A. The negative effect of antibiotics on farm animals.
B. The advantages of using antibiotics.
C. The reason for banning the use of antibiotics.
D. A new way of raising farm animals.

Only eight days until Thanksgiving and there wasn’t going to be enough money to buy the necessary things for the holiday. I promised my three sons that we’d love a nice family dinner in our new home, unlike the prior year when we canceled Thanksgiving to deal with the loss of their father.
It was hard to put everyday food on the table for three growing boys with the little I earned from work, but I promised a good meal. We looked forward to a day of good eating! But there was only enough bread in the house, two chicken breasts and a few other things.
The next day, I met my friend and neighbor, Aleta, at her home. Her four boys and my kids were good friends. Her husband had recently lost his job due to illness, and they suffered financial difficulties as well.
We stood there talking about our coming Thanksgiving dinner, and agreed to make a Thanksgiving feast together. Then children of the two families headed out and found a few neighbors who helped them earn enough to purchase most of the items they set out for, except the turkey.
Four days before Thanksgiving, I managed to buy a turkey and finished baking the cookies. My friend called with news about a family living in our community who needed help with food and bills. The father had been in an accident and unable to work for the last few months. We didn’t know the family well, but my friend and I went to visit them with our holiday cookies, hoping to help in some way. In no time, her kids ate the cookies.
While everyone chatted. I went into their kitchen. The cupboards were almost bare. I was shocked. Aleta and I left the house, desperately wanting to help. Without a word, we looked at each other, asking ourselves the same question. Could we sacrifice a little more and give the family our holiday meal

第四部分 写作
第一节 应用文写作
Dear Sally,
It’s very good that you want to make friends with the girl. In my opinion, you’d better first have a heart-to-heart talk with her, because understanding each other is very important for you two. And I also think it’s better for you to ask her to join you and your classmates in all kinds of activities, such as birthday parties, going out for a walk, discussing some fashionable topics. Besides, helping each other is also very important for both of you. Just share happiness and sadness with her. And I believe she will understand you in time and it is certain that you will be good friends in future.
Good luck to you!
Yours,
Sunny
第二节 读后续写
My eight-year-old summed up perfectly the reason we needed to share our meal. “Thanksgiving days are a time when we should learn to give. It’ll be just all right if we don’t have enough to eat,” he said firmly. Other children, upon learning his words, agreed, though I could feel that they feel a bit disappointed. Our children were excellent. Not only did they learn to appreciate the times when the dinner table was covered with enough food, but also how to help other out of trouble.
Early the next morning, we were able to deliver two full bags of groceries to our neighbors. Their young children jumped with excitement as they pulled groceries out of the bags. Their parents cried as they thanked us. And then, as she knew that we were not well off, she suggested that we three families have the Thanksgiving dinner together. You can’t imagine how excited we were at the dinner, talking and laughing happily. Seeing the children of our three families sitting together at the table. I felt life was so precious.
