In 1991, Keith White was at the centre of a 14-vehicle pile-up when a truck crossed the central reservation and hit the van in which he was a passenger. White survived, but his left arm was crushed beyond repair, and he lost his memory for two years.
His pilot license was removed and he could no longer follow his passion for diving. But he had been sailing since he was 16 and so, in 2004, he decided to buy a boat, fitting it out so he could sail it single-handedly. “I didn't know at that point if I could sail with one hand,” he says. “But at the back of my mind, I had always thought I could do anything if I put my mind to it.”
Within a year, White had taken on the challenge of being the first one-armed sailor to circumnavigate (环航) the British Isles. Then he crossed the Atlantic alone in 2008. Last year he became the first sailor with a disability to circumnavigate the globe.
Sailing single-handed for weeks requires mental, as well as physical, strength, especially when you are alone. So how does he do it It's a question that makes the yachtsman (帆船运动员) laugh. “When you have seven children it’s lovely to have a little time on your own! It’s awesome,” he jokes. “I do a log every hour, and my diary, and I read a few books. I have very little sleep.” “I’m a sociable person: I do like lots of people around. Answering emails and chatting over Facebook can help stop any loneliness,” he adds.
When White made his first Atlantic crossing, he was disappointed to have his peace and quiet broken by his arrival on land. But, he says, he threw himself into meeting new people. In between adventures, he likes sailing with people who haven’t tried it before or get involved in yacht races with friends. Perhaps the main reason for his success in adjusting to life after a big adventure, he says, is that he always has an idea for a new one in his back pocket. “It keeps me ticking over—there’s always something new to do. I just like challenges and one leads to another.”
24. Why couldn’t White continue his passion for diving
A. He lost his left arm. B. His license was due.
C. He had a new hobby. D. His memory was poor.
25. How did White spend his time at sea
A. By staying awake. B. By visiting old friends.
C. By keeping himself busy. D. By attending his children.
26. What mainly leads to White’s successful adjustment to life after a big adventure
A. Socializing with new people. B. Scheduling new adventure
C. Coaching new yachtsmen. D. Organizing yacht races.
27. Which of the following best describes Keith White
A. Creative. B. Humorous. C. Easy-going. D. Adventurous.

There’s no tune, no lyrics and you can’t dance to it. Don’t let that put you off: white noise is the music industry’s next big thing. Streaming services have seen an explosion of tracks in the last year consisting entirely of recordings of rainfall, ocean waves and winds.
Some of the recordings have earned their creators millions of pounds. Record companies and tech firms have taken notice. Apple is including background noise in its next operating system, and TikTok has been promoting pink noise and brown noise--sounds with lower frequencies as an aid to concentration for students at the start of the school year.
Noise fans say that studying, sleeping and meditation (冥想) are all enhanced by listening to these sounds at proper levels. The economics of music-streaming mean noise-makers can cash in. Someone falling asleep to White Noise Baby Sleep’s 90-second track Clean White Noise on repeat for seven hours will win up 280 plays. By last Friday it had been played 837 million times, worth an estimated $2.5m in royalties (版税). The lead track on Spotify's own Rain Sounds playlist, two minutes of rainfall, has more than 100m plays.
ln contrast, Laura Mvula only has 541,000 Spotify streams for the title track of this year’s award-winning album, Pink Noise--not a slice of sleepiness but tuneful, lyrical dance-pop that took her three years to make. Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming services pay royalties in roughly the same way. They set aside a total pot for royalties, which is then divided up between distributors, record labels, recording artists and songwriters. That means that Mvula will get a smaller slice of the Spotify pie than will White Noise Baby Sleep, although most of it goes to the major record companies.
It’s hard to work out who is making such noise. Spotify lists White Noise Baby Sleep’s songwriting credits as belonging to an Erik Eriksson. It's not obvious who Eriksson is or whether he is part of a larger organization, but the Medium website OneZero last year established that many of the artists’ names are pseudonyms (假名) used by companies.
28.Which of the following best describes white noise
A. Tuneful. B. Confusing. C. Expensive. D. Profitable.
29.How does the author describe the popularity of white noise in paragraph 3
A. By presenting some statistics. B. By making classifications.
C. By making a comparison. D. By giving a definition.
30. What does the author want to show by mentioning Laura Mvula’s Pink Noise
A. White noise is more popular. B. Pink noise has gone out of date.
C. How Mvula gets paid. D. Who makes huge profits.
31.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. Tips for attracting more white noise fans.
B. Challenges some companies are faced with.
C. Difficulty in identifying the copyright holders.
D. Ways to improve the qualities of credits.

Recognizing when a friend or colleague feels sad, angry or surprised is key to getting along with others. But a new study suggests that being sensitive to feelings may sometimes come with an extra dose of stress. This and other research challenge the current view that emotional intelligence is always beneficial to its bearer.
In a study, psychologists Myriam Bechtoldt of the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management in Germany asked 166 male university students a series of questions to measure their emotional intelligence. For example, they showed the students photographs of people’s faces and asked them to what extent feelings such as happiness or disgust were being expressed. The students then had to give job talks in front of judges displaying serious facial expressions. The scientists measured concentrations of the stress hormone cortisol in the students’ saliva(唾液) before and after the talk.
In students who were rated more emotionally intelligent, the stress measures increased more during the experiment and took longer to go back to baseline. The findings suggest that some people may be too emotionally clever for their own good, says Bechtoldt. “Sometimes you can be so good at something that it causes trouble,” she notes.
Indeed, the study adds to previous research hinting at a darker side of emotional intelligence. A study published in 2002 in Personality and Individual Differences suggested that emotionally perceptive people might be particularly influenced by feelings of depression and homelessness. Furthermore, several studies have implied that emotional intelligence can be used to control others for personal gains.
More research is needed to see how exactly the relation between emotional intelligence and stress would play out in women and in people or different ages and education levels. Nevertheless, emotional intelligence is a useful skill to have, as long as you learn to also properly deal with emotions—both others’ and your own, says Bechtoldt. For example, some sensitive individuals may assume responsibility for other people’s sadness or anger, which ultimately stresses them out. Remember, as Bechtoldt says, “you are not responsible for how other people feel.”
32. Why did Myriam Bechtoldt conduct the research
A. To challenge the public assumption.
B. To introduce measures to reduce stress.
C. To assess the impacts of being emotionally clever.
D. To demonstrate how to distinguish different feelings
33. What does the finding indicate
A. Greater emotional cleverness brings a head start in one’s life.
B. People may suffer from having a high emotional intelligence.
C. People’s psychological well-being is related to various factors.
D. Emotional intelligence means an upper hand in job interviews.
34. What do we learn about emotional intelligence from a number of studies
A. Some people may take advantage of it and benefit themselves.
B. Some people may lack it and are easily influenced by others.
C. People suffering from depression are emotionally immature.
D. People who look at the dark side of life are often depressed.
35. What does the author suggest sensitive individuals do
A. Help people to deal with their troubles in life.
B. Learn to cope with people's negative feelings.
C. Rid themselves of worries over worldly affairs.
D. Avoid burdening themselves with others' feelings.

Think back to your last presentation. 36 And were they engaged in what you were saying While you may think yourself to be a great speaker, it is not particularly hard to annoy your audience. Here are the top three of annoying habits in a presentation: reading the presentation (37%), having no knowledge of the subject matter (22%), using many “umms” and “uhhs” (16%).
So here are some tips to help you avoid these annoying mistakes.
The most annoying presentation habit is also one of the easiest to fall victim to. With a visual aid, you tend to look back and read what you have already written. 37 By reading your slides, you show no additional information, and therefore give your audience no reason to keep listening once they have finished reading the slide themselves.
One guideline I find especially effective is to ensure each slide has no more than six main points, and no more than six words per point. 38 When in practice, having slides with flexible layouts and proper pictures is equally important.
39 The more prepared you are, the better you can effectively avoid sounding like you’ve never even heard of your topic before. So, in order to show your audience you know your stuff, getting ready will make all the difference.
The third most annoying habit was using many “umms” and “uhhs”, a symptom of not communicating effectively. This could be a result of stage fright, but more often than not these interjections (感叹词) happen unconsciously. 40
One tip for avoiding this is to practice your presentation multiple times beforehand, out loud. The more you practice, the more likely you can catch yourself before letting the “umms” and “uhhs” slip out.
A. Was it boring
B. Were people interested
C. It helps you to save your time.
D. This stops you overloading your slides with information.
E. Despite how innocent they seem, they can ruin your credibility.
F. Avoiding another annoying habit comes down to one factor: preparation.
G. However, all this shows that you can do what your audience can as well.

I am a proud mother of three children, my last little one being delivered in the middle of this pandemic (疾病大流行. She was born in August and her name is Aida.
Shortly after having Aida, my mother-in-law Ann showed me something she learned from her friend’s mother in an art class she attended weekly . She had showed me how to knit a scarf. She showed me stitches (针) and gave me her half done project.
I spent a lot of time breastfeeding my sweet little girl, so I had some extra time to do something with my hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn(线) since it was winter. I wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts.
There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Jane, a shy girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged family, for she always wore old clothes. Worse still, in such cold days, she had no more clothes to wear and trembled with cold.
Due to the pandemic, society was thrown into crisis mode. Schools were closed, food supplies and deliveries were suspended and children were stuck at home. In such discouraging times, however, they became good companions, talking and playing at home or around the houses.
It was extremely cold this winter. Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always cried, “Mum, it is freezing outside!” Then, he came over to see whether I finished the scarf. I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me saying he could wait a few days. What a kind and considerate boy he was! Then my great art project finally was accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas.

I wrapped the scarf around David’s neck. David ‘s face lit up with joy. Wearing the soft scarf, David excitedly kissed me in the cheek, smiling at me, “Thank you, Mum. This is the best gift I have ever received.” Before I could say anything, he dashed out to join Jane with a spring in his step. I felt relieved and content as a mother, seeing David play happily outside, with the scarf sheltering him to brave the bone -chilling wind. Wearing a smile on my face, I continued my chores that morning.
Later that day David came back saying Jane also deserved a scarf. Obviously, David noticed Jane could hardly bear the freezing weather with worn-out clothes. “Can I give this to Jane as a Christmas gift ” David asked after a moment’s hesitation. Smilingly, I nodded. Seeing David rush into Jane’s house with the scarf in his hand, I was bursting with pride. I was happy that both of them received the best gift for Christmas. For Jane---a scarf to keep warm, and for David---a taste of happiness of giving.

M: What are you going to do Turn me in to the police
W: Oh, of course I’ll have to report you if you continue doing that. ⑨Then I’m afraid you’ll have to pack your things.
8. M: Hey, Sarah. Did you make it to school this morning
W: Yeah. Where were you I didn’t see you for a whole day!
M: Oh, ⑨my alarm didn’t go off. I reset it last night and accidentally made it p.m. instead of a.m.
W: Well, that was silly.
M: OK, listen up. Did you go to class Did you take good notes
W: Absolutely. They’re quite detailed.
M: Good. Can I look at them Or at least go over them together Weren’t we supposed to discuss something about water management or reducing the amount of water we use
W: Alright. I’ll go over with you. ⑩But you owe me a cup of coffee for that.
M: No problem.
9. W: Hi, Jules. How did you start as a music producer
M: Hi, Yvonne. You know, since I was a kid, I’ve always hoped to have my own place to produce music. And then when the first digital recording studios came out at the end of the eighties, basic multi-track recorders were also affordable. So the first thing I did was set up a studio in my room and created songs. I couldn’t sing, so that usually meant using a sample of some nice vocals, and then finding some cool electronic sounds to add in.
W: OK. And by the mid-nineties, you were in a professional recording studio, weren’t you
M: Yeah. I brought a tape along to a studio with the idea that they would make me a DJ artist. But Maggie, the woman who ran the place, took me aside and told me that I had a good ear but technically I had a lot to learn. And she gave me an opportunity as a producer. I remember walking home thinking, “Is that really what I want to do ” But I eventually accepted, and I’ve never looked back.
10. M: Thanks everybody for meeting here today. Well, let’s get right to the upcoming beach season. Of course, the beach itself is the biggest draw, but we’re also planning to continue our guided tours of the historical areas of the city. So, as you know, the tour is a bus ride and it goes from the north end of the beach, into the city, and then down to the southern end. It makes several stops along the way and a tour guide shares some fun information throughout. As in the past, our thought is that seeing what the town has to draw people back on days when they’re not at the beach. A new initiative this year is using the beach to host water sports. We’re still working out the details, but I think this could really increase the number of both first-time and returning visitors. Uh, and also, because of the damage from last year’s storm, some of the eating places on the boardwalk are out of business. To make up for that loss, we’re going to provide food trucks. That gives us the option for variety, and there’s no risk of future damage since we can just move the trucks. With that, I’d like to turn it over to Joan, who will walk us through the financial situation of the project, both in terms of cost and potential income.
