Winter Solstice (冬至) Celebrations From Around the World
The winter solstice, the longest night of the year, falls on December 21 or 22 in the Northern Hemisphere(半球) and June 20 or 21 in the Southern. Since ancient times, people all over the world have celebrated this important astronomical occurrence in different ways. Here are some winter solstice traditions both new and old to help light your way to longer days.
Soyal
Soyal is the winter solstice celebration of the Hopi Indians of northern Arizona. Ceremonies and rituals include purification, dancing, and sometimes gift-giving. On the day, Hopi welcome the protective spirits from the mountains.
Saturnalia
The ancient Roman festival of Saturnalia is perhaps the most closely linked with the modern celebration of Christmas. This festival happened around the time of the winter solstice and celebrated the end of the planting season. There were games and feasts and gift-giving for several days.
Midwinter in Antarctica
Even Antarctica gets its share of solstice celebration, thanks to the researchers staying there over the long, dangerously cold season. While those of us in the Northern Hemisphere are enjoying the most daylight hours, in the Southern Hemisphere they are celebrating Midwinter. Festivities include special meals, films, and sometimes even handmade gifts.
Dongzhi
Dongzhi, the "arrival of winter", is an important festival in China. It is a time for family to get together and celebrate the year they have had. The holiday generally falls between the 21st and 23rd of December. It is thought to have started as an end-of-harvest festival. Special foods, such as tangyuan and jiaozi, are enjoyed. Friends and family members occasionally express their blessings and care to each other through gifts.
21.Which of the following festival has something with Christmas
A. Soyal. B. Saturnalia.
C. Midwinter in Antarctica. D. Dongzhi.
22.What do the festivals have in common
A. They fall on the same day.

C. They mark the end of the year's harvest.
D. Their celebrations all include gift-giving.

A. News. B. Sports. C. Culture. D. Weather.
B
My mother looks just like many grandmothers. She comes from a traditional family. She was a career civil servant. In short, she didn't do crazy stuff. That all changed a few years ago. I still remember the year when she turned 80, she surprised my brother and me with what she described as “independence”.
One day she informed us she'd booked a seven-night trip to Turkey. Alone. Because she had never been. Of course, that was ridiculous. There was no way my brother and I could allow that. A weak, little old lady wandering the streets of Istanbul on her own, not speaking a word of Turkish, with no knowledge of the laws and customs of the land—it was out of the question!
She paid no attention to us. Off she went. When she returned, she told us it had been a wonderful success. As it turned out, she had barely spent any time alone after hiring a taxi driver to show her around Istanbul for some days. He took her to all the sites-the markets, churches and restaurants. He introduced her to a blanket seller, “a lovely fellow,” and she bought some blankets. The seller took her address details and promised to ship the blankets home. The seller and my mother apparently built a friendship and she told him to drop by if he were ever in Canada. My mother beamed (眉开眼笑) as she told this story.
To our great shock, her blankets did arrive some weeks later, along with a lovely note from the seller Mustafa. To our even greater surprise, the following year Mustafa himself arrived, and called our mother to inform her of that fact.
“He came by for a cup of tea. They drink a lot of tea in Turkey,” my mother told my horrified brother and me.
Her characteristic of independence seems to be thoughtfully based on a realisation that life is to be lived. It reminded me of the line from the movie The Shawshank Redemption: “Get busy living or get busy dying.”
24.Why did the author's mother go to Turkey alone
A. To make the author and the brother surprised.
B. To make the rest of her life meaningful.
C. To prepare herself to enter her ninth decade.
D. To inform the author that she was crazy.
25.Which of the following best describes the mother's trip to Turkey on the whole
A. Colourful. B. Boring. C. Dangerous. D. Challenging.
26.What do we know about the blanket seller
A. He is poor but kind-hearted. B. He is outgoing and funny.
C. He is rich but selfish. D. He is friendly and reliable.
27.What can we learn from the text
A. It's never too old to learn. B. East or West, home is best.
C. Life should be well lived. D. Time and tide wait for no man.
C
It's OK to run when it's cold outside. But is it OK to run when you have a cold Many runners find the activity addictive. Running releases endorphins (内啡肽) into the brain, which are responsible for mood changes. The harder you run, the more endorphins released, and the happier you are. Some studies show this endorphin rush allows people to continue running even when injured or sick.
And that brings us to the point of this article-why people continue their running even when they're sick. Most of us curl up in bed with some chicken soup and the remote control when we're under the weather. But runners often hit the road. Are they helping or hurting themselves by jogging with a cold
The best way to decide whether you should exercise is to employ what doctors call the "neck check". Feel free to go running if your cold is "above the neck". Doctors advise against proceeding with your exercise if your symptoms (症状) are "below the neck".
Some people think that running in cold temperatures will actually make them sick. But this isn't really true. You can't freeze your lungs or windpipe (气管). Your body heats the air you breathe. When the air is particularly cold, you may feel a burning sensation in your chest as you breathe. If that's the case, try covering your mouth with a scarf or wearing a ski mask. That'll help heat up the air before you breathe it in.
Keep in mind, if you have an infection (感染) in your chest or throat, running outside can indeed make things worse. But if you have a simple head cold, it would be fine to take that run, even if it's cold outside.
28.Why do some people still go running even if they are not in good condition
A. They'd like to keep their figures.
B. They don't realise the harm it does.
C. They want to feel the pleasure it brings.
D. They enjoy the atmosphere of running with others.
29.What does the underlined word "proceeding" in paragraph 3 mean
A. Stopping. B. Working. C. Changing. D.Continuing.
30.What is the misunderstanding of running in cold weather
A. It will make people ill.
B. It will worsen people's health.
C. It will burn your chest.
D. It has nothing to do with people's illness.
31.What can we learn from the text
A. Running when suffering a cold can be harmful.
B. Running in cold weather makes people happier.
C. Lying in bed is what we all do when catching a cold.
D. Covering your mouth when running in cold weather frees you from a cold.
D
A campaign (活动) is being launched to encourage children to surrender 30 minutes of screen time a day to head for the great outdoors.
The Wild Network—a collaboration (合作) of nearly 2,000 organisations—is attempting to attract youngsters away from the television and computer screen and to fields, woods and parks. Members of the network include the National Trust, RSPB, Play England and the NHS sustainable development unit. Organisers say it is the UK's biggest ever campaign to reconnect children with nature and outdoor play, and claim it could help improve fitness, mental alertness (机敏) and general well-being.
A documentary film, Project Wild Thing, which forecast the launch at more than 50 cinemas across the UK also looked at the increasingly fragile link between children and nature.
Andy Simpson, chairman of the Wild Network, said, "The tragic truth is that kids have lost touch with nature and the outdoors in just one generation. Time spent outdoors is down, roaming (漫步) ranges have fallen largely, activity levels are declining and the ability to identify common species has been lost."
Suggestions of how to get more time in nature include collecting conkers (七叶树果), camping or snail racing, and observing autumn colours on trees.
The network also aims to make suggestions to politicians on how government can do more to get children muddy and bright-eyed.
This is not the first time the message of "less screen, more play" has been brought up. Children in the 1980s were requested to do the same by the BBC TV series Why Don't You, which somewhat confusingly called on its viewers to "switch off your TV set and go to do something less boring instead".
32.What does the underlined word "surrender" in paragraph 1 probably mean
A.Give up. B.Get around.
C.Take up. D.Run away.
33.For what purpose is the Wild Network organised
A.To make children read more books.
B.To help children tell the natural world.
C.To encourage children to take part in outdoor activities.
D.To get children out of too much homework from school.
34."Less screen, more play" was first put forward by _____.
A.Wild Network B.the BBC
C.the National Trust D.Play England
35.What can we infer from the passage
A.The government will play an important role.
B.Children have already been close to nature.
C.Politicians have controlled the campaign.
D.TV viewers will turn away from television.

Weeks before Thanksgiving arrived, my anxiety about it increased. My husband and I recently made a cross-country move with our young child Tom. Our neighbours were an old couple, Mr Smith and Mrs Smith, who were kind and friendly.
Our new home was in a mess. "We should start thinking about plans for Thanksgiving," I suggested. "Don't worry about it," my husband said. "Heat up some hot dogs, maybe with some cheese, and the kid will be happy." That sounded great. I was in relief!
In the past holidays, I had never been responsible for cooking a full Thanksgiving dinner. My job was always to bring drinks or a side dish (items that had the highest success rate) to a large gathering and help clean up after the meal.
But one day my son Tom happily showed newly-created turkey crafts. "Let's go on a walk and try to find a rock that looks like a turkey!" Tom shouted at me. "Take me on a walk, Mummy!" The excitement was building, and I had a feeling that hot dogs were not going to be enough for my child on Thanksgiving.
"I'm going to try and prepare Thanksgiving food, Leonard," I said to my husband late one night. He eyed me curiously. "You sure " Then he said, "Okay, then, if you think you can do it." I said, "I've got two days to prepare. The grocery store is open twenty-four hours. I'm going to the store!"
Unfortunately, only a huge turkey remained, so I had no choice but to buy a thirty-pound turkey. Early the next morning, I dragged (拖;拉) the bagged turkey home. When my family saw it, they got a big surprise at its size. Seeing the surprise on their faces, I realised there was no way we could finish the turkey. It was too big for my family. "There was only one turkey left in the store," I explained. "But how could we finish the turkey " I asked my husband and Tom.
Tom said we could invite our neighbours, Mr and Mrs Smith, to share with us.

答案:CEAFD
解析:
前文These two words can inspire both joy and fear in the hearts of students everywhere. For others, it might feel like having to take part in something they aren't good at.
They hope that by making sports days less competitive, children of all abilities will be encouraged to take part without fear of losing. Exercise and fitness are important for everyone, no matter how good at sport you are.
We want to know your ideas.

答案:on/upon;distance;travelling;themselves;is considered;who;physically;to go;a;challenging
短语 focus on/upon... 故填on/upon。
故填is considered。
故填who。

第二节
答案:
Tom said we could invite our neighbours, Mr and Mrs Smith, to share with us. "I found the old couple were very lonely because no one had paid a visit to them since we moved here. Besides, I didn't see them buy anything for Thanksgiving," Tom said. Knowing that, we reached an agreement on inviting the couple. Tom was responsible for the invitation and my husband and I were in charge of dinner. Realising it would take hours to cook, we busied ourselves making an entire dinner.
Soon, Mr and Mrs Smith came to my house with a big smile on their faces. They greeted us and we made introductions to each other. Seeing my husband and I were clumsy at preparing dinner, the couple offered to give us a hand. With the help of them, a fancy dinner was done. Obviously Mrs Smith had a great talent for cooking. As a special treat, I laid out a beautiful red tablecloth, candles and our best china. We gathered around the table, eating delicious Thanksgiving dinner and making a promise to spend Christmas together next time.
