Children are often exposed to diet culture from a young age and its negative impacts can be long-lasting, according to Virginia Sole-Smith, author of a new book titled Fat Talk: Parenting in the Age of Diet Culture.
"Kids, at a very young age, start to become aware of body shaming," Sole-Smith said. "The main factors of children's future eating disorder (饮食失调) are kids' being ashamed of their weight and their history of dieting in childhood."
In Fat Talk, Sole-Smith argues that one way parents can fight back against this is to take a fresh look at the word "fat". "We can understand 'fat' as just a neutral body descriptor, just like saying tall or short or brown hair, black hair..." Sole-Smith said. "If your child in a bigger body comes to you, and he says, 'Am I fat ' you should be honest with him and say, 'You're fat.' And there's definitely nothing wrong with that. We love your body just the way it is."
Another suggestion from Sole-Smith is for parents to change conversations with and in front of children at home. "We can say I'm not going to feel ashamed of my body in front of my kids and I'm going to celebrate bodies in all shapes and sizes," Sole-Smith recommended. Simmons, a parenting expert, added, "So if you have a child who's in a bigger body, talk about their strengths," Simmons continued. "Helping our children concentrate on how our bodies work, how they allow us to achieve our goals... these are things we can remind our kids about every single day."
Often, diet conversations about size can be unavoidable for children, but Simmons said parents can act as a shield between children and some of the most harmful messages behind diet culture. But as children grow older, Simmons encourages parents to be honest with kids about their own struggles and not to pretend they know everything and that kids know nothing about diet culture.
24.What might contribute to children's future eating disorder
A. Body shape and peer pressure. B. Body image and parenting style.
C. Body change and food preference. D. Body shaming and dieting experience.
25.What can be learnt from paragraph 3
A. Parents should teach their kids honesty.
B. Kids should take pride in being overweight.
C. Parents should give "fat" a positive definition.
D. Kids should make peace with their body image.
26.What should kids focus on according to Simmons
A. Their body functions. B. Their individual characters.
C. Their physical appearance. D. Their career achievements.
27.What does the underlined word "shield" in the last paragraph mean
A. Tutor. B. Supporter. C. Protector. D. Connector.

Veery, a small songbird only weighing about 30 grammes, will migrate thousands of miles south--from North America, across the ocean, to South America in summer. No doubt it's a perilous journey. Some of those birds may never make it if a hurricane(飓风) happens.
But a study published in the journal Scientific Reports in 2018 showed that when veeries begin to leave the north is closely related to the coming of the Atlantic Basin hurricane season. The little birds try not to be destroyed by the possible hurricanes. During bad years, the birds would shorten their breeding (繁殖)season in the north and head down to South America earlier than usual. In this way, most of the birds survived. "It makes sense that they would figure it out somehow," says Christopher Heckscher, an ecologist at Delaware State University.
Exactly, veeries' way to “predict” hurricane seasons may result from small changes in regular, glolal cycles like El Ni o and La Nina events. During El Ni o years, the Pacific Ocean water is warmer than average, and those same Pacific Ocean temperatures produce winds that more effectively weaken hurricanes ,bringing down the number of hurricanes. The inverse (相反) is true for a La Ni a year. The little birds are usually smart enough to sense this and make a wise decision to migrate. With these changes, rainfall in veery habitat (栖息地) may vary. And during El Ni o years when more rain falls, more fruit could be available, which is a staple (主食) in the bird's diet. This change in diet may help the veeries return to North Americain better shape and also enjoy a longer breeding season back home.
Heckscher says although it's too early to determine what the birds are predicting for future Atlantic hurricane seasons, veeries have been just as good, and in one case better than meteorological (气象的)models in predicting hurricanes.
28.What does the underlined word "perilous" in paragraph 1 mean
A. Dangerous. B. Strange. C. Beneficial. D. Powerful.
29.What have scientists discovered about the migration of vecries
A.It brings the climate change.
B. It explains why hurricanes happen.
C. It often occurs later than other migrant birds'.
D. It is influenced by the possible hurricane season.
30.What may happen to veeries during El Ni o years
A. They seek for more food. B. They meet more hurricanes.
C. They don't fly back to the north. D. They become stronger when breeding.
31.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Veery: Beating Climate Models
B. Veery: A Natural Predictor of Hurricanes
C. El Ni o: Destroying Veeries' Migration

When I woke up on Aug 4,2022, there was only one thing on my mind: what to wear. A billion thoughts appeared through my brain in the closet(衣橱). Not only was it my first day of high school, but it was my first day of school in a new state; first impressions are everything, and it was important for me to impress the people who I would spend the next four years with.
After carefully hunting my closet, I proudly came out in a dress from Target. The soft cotton was comfortable, and the specially designed shoulders added a little of fun. Yes, this cloth was the one. An hour later, I felt powerful as I headed toward room 1136. But as I entered class, my jaw(下巴)dropped to the floor.
Sitting at her desk was Mrs Hutfilz, my English teacher, wearing exactly the same dress as me. I kept my head down and tiptoed(踮着脚尖)to my seat. I made it through my simple introduction speech until Mrs Hutfilz stood up, jokingly saying that she liked my style. Although this was the moment I had been afraid of from the moment I walked in, all my anxiety surprisingly melted away, and the students paid attention as I shared my story. My smile grew as I laughed with the students. After class, I stayed behind, talked to Mrs Hutfilz and made a humorous and real communication.
Looking back four years later, the ten minutes I spent afraid of giving my speech were really not worth it. My first period of high school certainly made the day unforgettable in the best way and taught me that Mrs Hutfilz has a brilliant sense of style!

A. The dress was made of silk.
B. She went into the waiting room 1136.

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, "I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp." And then she walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but the forest and, far beyond, a snow-capped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
"Tom!" she cried. "Help!"
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling(滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hoped it would lead her to the lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard the sound of a helicopter. Is that for me Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them down if they came back again.

第四部分 写作
第一节
答案:
Dear Peter,
How is everything going I am very glad to learn that you are coming to China this winter holiday. Now let me tell you something about how to learn Chinese well.
Learning Chinese is just like learning any other foreign language, so you should not be shy and speak Chinese whenever you can, which are very important. The more you use Chinese, the better you will learn it. You'd better speak slowly, listen to the tape and repeat the phrases. If others can't understand you, you can use pictures or body language to help you. I hope these tips can help you.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
But no more helicopters came and it was dark. Immediately, absolute darkness ruled the forest. Jane, exhausted and scared, lay down near a stone, missing her family at a distance. All the fantastic memories crowded in and she couldn't help crying, "Hadn't I quarreled with Tom, walked away and climbed to the high place, I wouldn't be trapped in this awful place and confronted with the danger of dying." She regretted her behaviour with endless anxieties, and then became asleep with tears in her eyes.
Paragraph 2:
It was daybreak when Jane woke up. Weak as she was, she struggled to her feet, continuing searching for assistance. To her great joy, a helicopter was flying overhead again. Eager and excited, she waved her yellow blouse and spared no effort to yell so as to attract its attention. Fortunately, she was eventually noticed and brought into the helicopter. There she saw her husband, a man staring at her, wearing an expression of relief. As tightly as possible, she hugged him and was too thrilled to say anything. Besides, they agreed never to quarrel again, determining to live the life to the fullest.
