When you live in the driest state in the driest country in the world, bushfires are an unfortunate, and all-too-regular part of life. Learning how to survive such emergencies is important for all people, but especially for our youngest citizens. Now, a new virtual reality (VR) experience developed by the University of South Australia is educating children about bushfires and helping them learn how to be safer in a bushfire.
Focusing on children aged 10-12 years, the new VR experience presents a situation where children are tasked with looking after a friend's dog just before a fire event begins to unfold. They take part in a series of problem-solving activities to help save and protect themselves and the dog.
After the experience, more than 80 percent of children reported that they felt more confident about calmly evaluating the options and making wise decisions to protect themselves from a bushfire. This is especially significant considering that 91 percent of children originally lacked any knowledge of fires, and that 67 percent had said that they were too young to make safety decisions in a fire.
The researchers believe immersive(沉浸式虚拟现实的) VR experiences have real potential to attract, educate and empower the young.
"As digital natives, they are attracted by technology, so when it's immersive-as it is with VR-they can experience events realistically yet within a safe environment," said Delene Weber, lead author of the research. "Well-designed VR can provide an opportunity for children to apply newly acquired knowledge, strengthen their learnt concepts, and enable immediate feedback(反馈意见)."
Meanwhile, because children have fewer life experiences, and they are less likely to have learned much about bushfire safety, they're often the most vulnerable group when a bushfire occurs. "With purpose-built virtual reality experiences, we can help empower children to understand how they can manage by themselves with a bushfire, and we can help them build confidence so that they can contribute positively rather than just being afraid," said Weber.
24.How does the new VR experience try to educate children
A. By introducing a virtual friend to them.
B. By analyzing the causes of many fire events.
C.By letting them solve problems in a virtual situation.
D.By teaching them to fight bushfires with the help of dogs.
25.What did the result of the research show
A. Many children found it hard to adapt to VR experiences.
B.VR experiences could greatly help ensure children's safety.
C. Most children had a misunderstanding about VR experiences.
D. VR experiences benefited children with knowledge of fire most.
26.What does the underlined word "vulnerable" in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Being slightly worried. B.Being hardly noticed.
C. Being well protected. D.Being easily hurt.
27.What can be the most suitable title of the text
A. VR Experience Can Help Kids to Survivea Fire
B. VR Education Appeals to the Young Generation
C. VR Experience Can Improve Kids' Learning Ability
D. VR Technology Proves Useful in Fighting Bushfires

Every April for the past years, biologist Rodrigo Gutiérrez has driven 1,600 kilometers to reach one of the driest places on Earth: Chile's Atacama Desert, parts of which receive less than three millimeters of rain every year. His team collected plants and soil from nearly twenty-four sites each year and brought them back to his laboratory at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. For a new study, Gutiérrez and his colleagues studied the plants' genes(基因) that help them grow well in such extreme conditions.
"We knew almost nothing about how these plants survived," Gutiérrez says. There are great benefits from studying these wild species, which is now a little easier with all the genomic(基因组的) tools that we have."
Scientists usually do genetic studies on lab-grown plants, which lets researchers strictly control some factors. But sampling(抽样) plants in nature catches key differences based on their varied living conditions. "This study combines the genomics with ecological understanding of how plants behave in their natural environment," says biologist Neelima Sinha in University of California, Davis. "That just by itself makes it very significant."
To identify genes that contribute to the plants' survival, Gutiérrez worked with ecologists, biologists, genomics experts and computer scientists to compare the genetic codes(遗传密码) of the Atacama species with those of closely related plants. In what the researchers describe as a "genetic gold mine", they traced genomes' changes and identified adaptive mutations(突变) related to stress response, chemical processes and energy production. These mutations might help desert plants stand intense solar heating, improve water intake and adjust flowering times. The researchers also discovered a lot of bacteria that live on the desert plants' roots and encourage their growth.
"Researchers could put newfound genes into food plants and grasses," Gutiérrez says, "giving such species better survival chances when planted in saltier soils and areas experiencing drought—conditions expected to become more terrible with climate change."
28.Why does Rodrigo Gutiérrez travel to Chile's Atacama Desert every year
A. To study the extreme climate there. B. To measure the amount of rainfall.
C. To gather experimental samples. D. To try to establish a lab there.
29.What is the significance of the new study
A. It helped advance the genomic tools greatly.
B. It took plants' living conditions into consideration.
C. It helped lab-grown plants adapt to various conditions.
D. It let researchers control the plants' natural environment.
30.What do researchers expect to do
A. To improve plants' living conditions.
B. To prevent climate change getting worse.
C. To study the cause of some areas' drought.
D. To make other plants able to stand hard conditions.
31.What does the text mainly talk about
A. Desert plants' survival advantages may help other plants' growth.
B. Desert plants can play a role in dealing with climate change.
C. Desert plants' genetic codes are hard to understand.
D. Desert plants are different from other plants.
D
Yosemite National Park is always crowded with visitors. For two weeks each February, however, the crowd increases rapidly. For just a few minutes each day, the setting sun lines up with Horsetail Fall, lighting the waterfall so that it appears to be lava(熔岩). “Firefall” has become a hot tourist spot: it drew over 2,000 visitors on a single day.
The National Park Service(NPS) introduced a permit for the feature spot in 2021 because of COVID-19, but lifted restrictions this year. "It's a disaster," says one of a pair of photographers who were annoyed by the number of visitors and lack of restrictions this year. Surrounding their careful set-up was a long line of cars and large groups shouting to one another while they waited for the sunset. The pair preferred the permit system, which limited the crowds.
But are permits the solution to overcrowding America's parks have adopted many permitting methods to keep visits sustainable(可持续的) and access fair. However, the results are mixed.
The beautiful sandstone feature known as "The Wave" near Kanab, Utah, can deal with only a small group of visitors without suffering damage. Apart from the high ticket price, the possibility of getting one of the four group permits issued in person each day is low. But Utah's "only legal lottery(彩票)" has succeeded in preserving one of the country's most unusual natural structures while offering a wonderfully uncrowded hiking experience.
However, things are completely different for Half Dome, a challenging destination which attracts tens of thousands of hikers each year. Cables have been installed to enable those without rock-climbing skills to reach the top. From 2005 to 2009 there were 85 search-and-rescue incidents and eight deaths. In 2010 the NPS limited access to those with permits. The number of visitors dropped sharply, and deadly accidents fell by half—but serious accidents per person actually rose. The scarcity of permits may have increased the pressure to complete the hike, leading to more accidents.
What may sound like a simple solution turns out in practice to be anything but. Permit systems require a fine balance—much like the nature they seek to protect.
32.What does the author want to show in the first two paragraphs
A. The disadvantage of the permit system.
B. The permit system's effects on visitors.
C. The popularity of "firefall" among visitors.
D.The pressure caused by big crowds in the park.
33.What does the example of "The Wave" tell us
A.Utah's permits are well protected by law.
B. Some permits can really keep hikers safe.
C. Some permits are effective in protecting nature.
D. Utah's permits are not available to most people.
34.What does the underlined word "scarcity" in the last but one paragraph probably mean
A. Availability. B. Shortage. C.Power. D.Quality.
35.What does the author say about permit systems
A. They should be made flexible. B. They should be widely applied.
C. They should be strictly controlled. D. They should be run by the government.

I first played ping-pong in our basement (地下室) at home. My elder brother and I asked for an old wooden table from my grandfather. It was painted green. Although it was very simple, it served its purpose and we played on it every day. My father never really played any other sports with me, but ping-pong was one that he played quite well and it took me plenty of time to beat him. My elder brother was also a very good competitor.
When I got to university, I was happy to discover a ping-pong table in the common room. I spent a great deal of time there, often until midnight. There were about three or four friends that I often played against. We were all at the same skill level. One of them had ever played in a tournament. A friend from Germany said his father had ever won the German national tournament. We took part in a tournament. My ranking (名次) was the third place, but I had beaten the first and second place winners when we had played for fun. I sometimes played with other friends who didn't play ping-pong well, so I would use my left hand to give them an advantage. But before long I became so skilled with my left hand that they no longer had the advantage.
Later, I played in a ping-pong competition which was held by my university. I lost the competition at first. But because it was double elimination (双淘汰制) , I went to the loser group. I beat all the players and then played against the student who had beaten me in the first round. Surprisingly, I beat him 3 times and won the competition.
Later, there was a tournament held in the city where I studied.

After the tournament, I didn't often do sport because of the busy study.

解析:W: Most young people like to enjoy playing on their smartphones in their spare time. But Li Ruxue is different. He often does some research in a forest and isolates himself from the outside world. In his college years, Li actively took part in field research with his teachers. After graduation, he joined a gibbon protection organization, where one of his major responsibilities was picking up gibbon feces. Through analyzing the DNA from the feces, researchers can protect them better. So over the past four and a half years, Li has followed gibbons and collected their feces for researchers.
Though the work is a bit tiring, it’s meaningful for him. He has never regretted his choice or felt alone. Like Li, Chu Wenwen has also worked to protect animals. As her father is engaged in wildlife research, Chu has long been surrounded by wild animals. After graduating from university in 2017, she decided to follow in her father’s footsteps. She thinks she is lucky to live in such a great era when young people can fulfill their aspirations, and the country strongly supports the nature conservation.
Both Li Ruxue and Chu Wenwen set an example to our young generation. We should do our part like them and take part in the action of protecting animals.

答案:who/that;is viewed/has been viewed;are;changing;roughly;have promised;whether/if;the;invitation;to continue
解析:
who/that.
is viewed/has been viewed.
are.
changing.
roughly.
have promised.
whether/if.
the.
invitation.

Later, there was a tournament held in the city where I studied. It was a tournament for university students. Players came from all the northern universities. I felt very proud because I took part in it on behalf of my university. I believed that I could play pretty well. I expected to get a good ranking in the tournament. But in fact, I felt very nervous, because I played against a student who had won many times. I played very hard and tried my best. Although I lost the tournament, it was good practice.
After the tournament, I didn't often do sport because of the busy study. But I played ping-pong with my friends when I was free. I thought it was a great deal of fun playing ping-pong with friends. It was also a good way to make our friendship closer and keep us healthier. We sometimes took part in a competition together, but we didn't care about winning or not. We all knew that a win was not everything. We just enjoyed playing together and had a wonderful time.
