THEN WE CAME TO THE END
Joshua Ferris
The first novel by American author Joshua Ferris was so different, because it is written in the second person; the group of odd office colleagues talk and act as a collective. It must have been hard to maintain, but Ferris does a great job. It is really a good novel set in boring office environments.
THE GRAPES OF WRATH
John Steinbeck
Obviously a classic and still popular, the themes of this novel are timeless and echo just us strongly today. Set during the Great Depression, the story follows a family of “Okies”— poor migrant farmers from Oklahoma — as they head west seeking work.
PROPERTY
Lionel Shriver
Short stories from one of our best contemporary writers. Exploring the theme of possessions and ownership from many angles, this is certainly one for Marie Kondo fans. I have long been interested in what it is about things that can hook some people. The drive to possess items that serve no obvious purpose is most appealing to me. Fine, if an item is something given to you by someone special. But if you take a look around you, some things are probably simply useless and unmemorable. Shriver’s book explores it better.
THE LOVE THATIHAVE
James Maloney
This absorbing story is about Margot Baumann, who takes a job in a mail- room in what, as later becomes clear, is a concentration camp, The amazing thing is the perspective it gives of German life during World War II. Of course not all Germans, probably the large majority, had any real idea of what was going on. Within Margot’s immediate circle you see the reactions among the German population to the rise and fall of their beloved — or hated- Fuhrer(元首). And nation.

A Chicago six- year- old girl’s decision to feed the homeless instead of receiving presents on her birthday is touching the hearts of many not only in the area, but also across the country.
Armani Crews had been begging her parents for a few months to feed homeless people in her community.

Earthquake rescue robots have experienced their final tests in Beijing. Their designers say with these robots, rescuers will be able to save lives during an earthquake.
This robot looking like a helicopter, is called the detector- bot. It’s about 4 meters long, and it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main function s are to collect information from the air, and send goods of up to 30 kilos, to people trapped by an earthquake.
This robot has a high definition 360 degree panoramic (全景) camera. It can work day and night and will also be able to send the latest pictures from the quake area.
Dr Qi Juntong, Chinese Academy of science, said, “The most important feature of this robot is that it doesn’t need a distant control. We just set the destination(目的地) information on it, and then it takes off, and lands by itself. It flies as high as 3,000 meters, and as fast as 100 kilometers per hour.”
This robot has a different function — it can change as the environment changes. Its main job is to search for any signs of life in places where human rescuers are unable to go.
As well as a detector(探测器) that finds victims and detects poisonous gas, a camera is placed in the 40 centimeter long robot, which can work in the dark.
Another use for the rescuers is the supply part, with its 10 meter long pipe. People who are trapped in the ruins, will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquids.
Experts have said that the robots will enter production, and serve as part of the national earthquake rescue team as soon as next year.

I do a wide range of things online. Besides doing all my school work, I chat with my friends, watch films and read the daily news and other interesting articles; I also shop for various things online, such as books, computer hardware and other necessities. I also play computer games from time to time and I even play tennis on my television screen in my living room!
My parents are worried that I may become an “Internet addict”. They think I’m playing computer games all the time and I chat too much with online friends. According to them, there is a danger that I may not be able to tell whether these friends are real friends. My mum keeps telling me to go out with my school friends instead. Maybe she’s right.
