A teacher teaches stay- at- home mothers how to make cakes at a vocational school in Changle district, Fuzhou, capital of southeast China’s Fujian Province.
Jobs tailored for mothers who are still of working age and have children aged 12 and below are helping them overcome re- employment difficulties to some extent and strike a balance between work and taking care of their kids. This is an employment model that has been widely popular with stay- at- home mothers across China.
Pi Rongjie, whose child is 4 years old, works for an LED factory near her child’s kindergarten in Jing’ an county, Yichun city, east China’s Jiangxi Province. Unlike her colleagues on the company’s other production lines, mothers working under this model including Pi can clock in half an hour later and finish a day between 5 p. m. and 6 p. m.
In addition to providing flexible working hours, some regions are optimizing(优化) the working environment and model to better help young mothers through measures such as allowing them to take their children to the workplace and setting up community- based workshops for them. Moreover, organizations such as women’s federations should keep close contact with mothers working under this model, safeguard their legitimate(合法的) rights and interests, listen to the views of employers, and improve mechanisms for labor dispute mediation(调解) to ensure the healthy development of this flexible employment model.
Meanwhile, the development of some new business models in China such as livestreaming e- commerce has brought more options for mothers seeking flexible employment. For example, positions for mothers including operational staff, livestreamers, and customer service staff allow them to work from home.

Fire season is approaching in the massive Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge in east Alaska, where fires have long been allowed to burn unchecked unless they threaten human life and property. But as climate change increases the frequency of these fires, the land’s overseers(监督者) are changing course. Working with scientists, refuge managers have designed a pilot programme to send experienced firefighting teams into remote areas to protect not people but permafrost(永久冻土).
The forests of the Denmark- sized refuge cover a deep layer of permafrost— frozen ground that holds enormous quantities of carbon across the Northern Hemisphere. After fires remove vegetation and soils, however, that frozen ground often begins to melt, releasing its stores of carbon dioxide(CO2) and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
New research suggests that the resulting emissions, from both the fires themselves and the subsequent permafrost melt, could be equal to those of a major global economy over the course of this century. This could effectively reduce by up to 20% the amount of carbon dioxide that humanity can emit and still meet its goal of limiting global warming to 1.5℃ above preindustrial levels.
A rise in fire frequency can have cascading effects(级联效应) on the ecosystem. Historically, northern forests have burnt once every 70-120 years, which gives the black- spruce(黑云杉) forest that dominates the ecosystem enough time to regenerate and rebuild carbon in the soil. More- frequent fires can burn ‘legacy’ carbon that has accumulated over centuries and can also kill off the black spruce. That provides an opening for leafy deciduous(落叶的) trees, which do not promote the kind of carbon- rich soils that seperate permafrost.
Fire control could help to put off some of these effects, buying humanity time to address the climate crisis. It could be a few decades before scientists can determine whether the effort pays off, but we have to try.
28.How did the refuge authorities deal with fires in the past
A.They dropped firefighters by parachute. B.They took no measures if there was no threat.
C.They protected permafrost rather than people. D.They sent well- trained pilots to remote areas.
29.What are Paragraphs 2 and 3 mainly about
A.The effect of fires on permafrost. B.The numbers of carbon emissions.
C.The advance of global economy. D.The tendency of global warming.
30.Which is not mentioned concerning the cascading effects
A.More emissions of greenhouse gas. B.More destruction of black spruce.
C.The rise of leafy deciduous trees. D.The increase in carbon- rich soils.
31.What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A.Addressing the climate crisis is credited to firefighting teams.
B.It is no good changing the long- standing fire control policies.
C.There’s still a long way to go before addressing climate crisis.
D.Our effort will definitely pay off if we protect the permafrost.

A new center at the Stanford School of Engineering will fund artificial intelligence in the service of space science, exploration, and business.
The Center for AEroSpace Autonomy Research, or CAESAR, aims to make these activities more efficient, safe, and sustainable. Researchers at the center say that AI could optimize navigation for spacecraft, skillfully land space vehicles on planets or asteroids(小行星), allow unmanned rovers to make decisions about where to go, what to avoid, and what to analyze, keep tabs on all the space junk (some 60,000 pieces, at last count) spinning around Earth, and much more.
To enable such ambitions, Marco Pavone, CAESAR co- founder and associate professor of aeronautics and astronautics, announced that one of the center’s main projects will be to develop a foundation model for space pursuits. A foundation model is a kind of general- purpose AI that’s trained on huge amounts of data and can handle a variety of tasks, like generating text, images, and even videos. “This space foundation model,” Pavone said, “will be designed to synthesize(合成) information across a range of modalities, including vision, text, remote sensing (such as multispectral imagery and radar), and space- object catalogs, and will be capable of addressing a variety of space- related tasks, including situational awareness, positioning, and navigation.”
Simone D’Amico, CAESAR co- founder and associate professor of aeronautics and astronautics, made it clear that he, Pavone, and their colleagues plan to proceed cautiously, with eyes wide open to the potential pitfalls(隐患) of pursuing AI for spacecraft and robots. He said that in some cases, AI components are not the most effective choice for space systems.
“We founded CAESAR with the objective to tackle unsolved problems in spaceborne autonomy through the wise incorporation(合并) of artificial intelligence components,” D’Amico said.
Though the space foundation model will be a game changer, D’Amico also noted the restrictions space imposes on the startup technology. For example, space is a difficult, remote environment that’s not readily available for AI training, and powerful microprocessors needed for AI are still not flexible to space radiation.
32.What are CAESAR intended for
A.Clearing up the space junk. B.Doing space activities by AI.
C.Navigating planets and asteroids. D.Raising space- related fund.
33.What is one of CAESAR’s main pursuits according to the text
A.To develop a foundation model to help deal with different missions.
B.To adopt the off- the- beaten- track incorporation of AI sets.
C.To provide once- and- for- all solutions to space problems.
D.To address potential pitfalls of AI used in space exploration.
34.What is D’Amico’s attitude towards CAESAR
A.Cautious. B.Unclear. C.Doubtful. D.Disapproving.
35.What is a suitable title for the text
A.CAESAR’s Exploration in Asteroids B.CAESAR’s Success in Engineering
C.CAESAR’s Attempt with Space- related AI D.CAESAR’s Restrictions on Robots

College admissions experts offer tips on how to write a college essay. For college applicants, the essay is the place to showcase their writing skills and let their unique voice shine through. 36
Getting Started on the College Essay
A good time for students to begin working on their essays is the summer before senior year, when homework and extracurricular activities aren’t taking up time and energy. 37 Students can go online to review essay requirements, such as word limits and essay topics. Many students may start with the Common App, an application platform accepted by more than 1,000 schools.
How Long Should a College Essay Be
38 “While we won’t stop reading after 650 words, we cannot promise that an overly word y essay will hold our attention for as long as you’d hoped,” the Common App states.
39
The most discouraging step in the essay writing process is figuring out what to write about. There are several topics to choose. The essay isn’t a complete autobiography. It’s overwhelming to think of putting your whole life in one essay. Rather, students should narrow their focus and write about a specific experience or hobby that reveals something personal, like how they think, what they value or what their strengths are. Students can also write about something that illustrates an aspect of their background. 40 What’s most important is that a college essay is thoughtful and tells a story that offers insight into who a student is as a person.
A.How to Write a College Essay.
B.How to Pick a College Essay Topic.
C.The following are tips on writing a college essay.
D.You should show your respect to the college teachers.
E.These are the types of essays that stand out to admissions officers.

Frank Daily stared down at the frozen ground. He kicked chunks of snow with his new Nike shoes. He only pretended to listen to the chat of his friends, Norm and Ed, as they all got on the number 10 bus after school.
Frank and his friends sat down at the back of the bus along with several other high school boys, some from other schools. The bus headed west on Blue Mound Road. He still remembered another cold, gray day just a month ago in November when his world crashed down around him, as he read the team list, searching desperately for his name. It wasn’t there.
The bus braked suddenly, and Frank naturally pressed his Nikes against the floor. “It must have been my size,” he thought, “Five- feet- four. Since I’m new at Marquette High, the coach must have taken one look at me and my shoes and decided I was too small to join the basketball team.” He had been a star athlete in all the sports in primary school. Now, it seemed he was a nothing.
The bus stopped at the County Institutions grounds. Frank glanced up at the driver, who had a nickname “Kojak” because of his bald head.
An elderly woman hung onto the handrail and slowly pulled herself onto the bus. As she sank into the seat behind the bus driver, her feet kicked up, and Frank saw that she was barefoot.
As Kojak got the bus back into traffic, he yelled over his shoulder, “Where are your shoes, lady It was below 10 degrees out there.” “I can’t afford shoes,” the woman answered. She pulled her worn- out coat collar around her neck. Some of the boys at the back exchanged glances and laughed.
“I got on the bus just to get my feet warm,” the woman continued. “If you don’t mind, I’ll just ride around with you for a bit.”
Kojak scratched his bald head and shouted, “Now just tell me how come you can’t afford shoes ”
“My husband is badly ill in the hospital, so we only have money for food and necessities,” the woman said in a low voice.

With a complicated mood, he slipped the shoes off under his seat. When the bus stopped, Frank waited until everyone else had got off. Then he reached under his seat and picked up his basketball shoes. He walked quickly up to the woman and handed them to her, looking down and saying, “Here, lady, you need these more than I do.”
Then Frank hurried to the door and was about to step down. He heard the woman exclaim, “Look, they fit me just perfectly!” Then he heard Kojak said, “I’ve never seen anything like that in the 20 years I’ve been driving this bus.” The woman was crying. “Thank you, young man,” she said. He smiled at the woman. “It’s no big deal.” He hurried off after Norm and Ed. It seemed to him that the grayness had lifted. On the way home, hardly could he feel the cold beneath his feet at all.
