Manymartial arts were invented because people needed to defend themselves or protectothers. Nowadays, people learn martial arts as a way of keeping fit or as acompetitive sport, but they are still very useful for self-defence.Martial arts are often referred to as either soft or hard. These terms implya way of dealing with your opponent's force. Soft martial arts, such as tai chi, teach you to use your opponent's own force to defend yourself. Soft styles usefluid movements and timing to avoid, deflect and redirect their opponent'sattacks. These martial arts are soft for the defender but not for the attacker! On theother hand, hard styles, such as kung fu, teach you to defend yourself using force(动词-ing短语作方式状语). Techniques involve blocking, posturing and powerfulpunching and kicking. Hard martial arts techniques are more effective if you aremore skilful, more powerful and faster than your opponent.Perhaps one of the best known Japanese martial arts today is karate. But didyou know that its roots are derived from Fujian Province In the 14 century, acommunity of Chinese migrants from Fujian settled in what was then thekingdom of Okinawa(what引导的宾语从句,作settled in的宾语。 . The Chinese migrants used to gather in a park to enjoy culturalactivities"—one of which was kung fu(数词+of+关系代词"引导的定语从句,对cultural activities进行补充说明。). This soon caught the attention of localyouths, who started learning kung fu from their Chinese neighbours. In fact, Chinese influence in martial arts was not limited to kung fu. Thevery first Korean military training manual was based on a Chinese version .During the Japanese invasion of Korea in the 16 century, the Korean armyneeded an effective way to train a large number of troops. They adopted atraining methodology from a Chinese military manual called Ji Xiao Xin Shu,written by the famed . .Chinese general, Qi Jiguang, who had himself defeatedJapanese pirates."called Ji Xiao Xin Shu"和"written by...pirates"均为动词-ed短语作后置定语,修饰中心词"a Chinese military manual";Qi Jiguang是"the famed Chinese general"的同位语,"who had...pirates"为who引导的非限制性定语从句。 名师圈点①originate in+地点 起源于某地originate / r d ne t/ vi. 保护,保卫defend sb./sth.against/from... 词链 defend (vt.& vi.)—defender(n.[C]保护人;后卫)—defence(n.[U]防御,保护)—defensive(adj.防御的;戒备的)③competitive sports/games竞技性的体育运动/比赛④be useful for (doing) sth.对(做)某事有用拓展 be useful to sb.对某人有帮助⑤ refer to ...as... 定居 catch the attention of sb. 引起某人的注意(=catch sb.'s attention) be limited to...被限制在……,限于…… version / v : n/ n.[C]版本 a (large) number of很多,许多。 对比 the number of+名词复数,表示"…… adopt / d pt/ vt. 著名的be famed for sth. READING CLUB 2GETTING FITLATIN DANCE WITH KARENHave fun and get fit!Do you hate exercise but love dancing and parties Well, Latin dance is foryou—it combines great music and dancing with hard exercise (burn 1,000calories an hour).
