Today, with the development of society, people all over the world almost have the same hobbies, watch the same movies, and wear the same clothes. That is to say, we are not very different in some ways. However, cultures are still quite different. In the East and in the West, social rules are not the same.
In the East, it can take a long time to become someone’s friend. But people are very close to their friends. When people from the West meet you, they will call you a friend right away. That doesn’t mean they are close to you.
When people from the East meet you, they often ask questions. They want to know about your age, your salary (薪水) and whether you are married or not. For people from the West, these are not polite questions. They don’t like to talk about these personal things. They think such kind of questions violate (侵犯) their privacy (隐私).
Family is important for everyone. However, in the East, family is always a part of life. Kids there live with their parents for a long time. They still listen to them after they grow up.
In the West, independence is very important. Parents prepare their kids for life. Then, after their kids grow up, they say goodbye and leave home. Later, the kids can choose to start a family or not. They don’t have to listen to their parents.
▲ People in the West think about small details (细节). They also think less and act more. So, they will be loud about their opinions. In the East, people pay much attention to relationships between things, and they often keep their opinions quietly. That keeps relationships happy.
52.The underlined word “They” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________.
A.people from the East B.people’s close friends
C.people from the West D.parents in each family
53.According to the passage, people all over the world are different in some ways because ________.

A.People in the West don’t like to think about things carefully.
B.In the East and in the West, people think differently, too.
C.The relationships between people are quite different.
D.People in the East and the West are good at different things.
55.What’s the purpose of writing the passage
A.To warn us not to ask people’s age and salary.

①Have you ever thought about how babies learn to speak A recent study led by David, a researcher from Florida Atlantic University, found that babies learn to speak not only by listening to sounds but also by watching people’s lips (嘴唇) move. This happens as babies start making clear words like “mama” or “dada” for the first time. They need to learn how to move their lips to make the sounds they hear.
②According to the previous (之前的) research, babies learn to connect sounds with mouth movements fast. When they turn one year old, they look at your eyes more. This means that talking to babies eye-to-eye is better for their language skills than just letting them watch DVDs.
③But David went a step further. He and his student Hansen tested nearly 180 babies, groups of them aged 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 months. They tried to find out how these babies reacted to the sound of their mother language and another language.
④They showed videos of a woman speaking in English to babies of English speakers. They found that when the speaker used English, the 4-month-old babies gazed (凝视) mostly into her eyes. The 6-month-old babies spent the same amounts (数量) of time looking at both the eyes and the mouth. However, when babies reached 8 to 10 months old, they focused more on the mouth instead of the eyes. At 12 months, the babies started looking back at the eyes, like what they did at 4 months.
⑤What happened when these babies who are used to English heard French The 12-month-old babies studied the mouth longer, just like younger babies. By focusing on the mouth movement, they tried to collect more information to understand the strange sounds.
⑥“The results of the research show babies watch mouths to learn their first language and look at eyes by 12 months old. They watch mouths longer when they hear a new language.” says Duke University scientist Greg. He adds excitedly, “I have never thought babies would learn language like this. The results of the research are blowing my mind. So I want to learn more about it. Learning how babies learn is important to unlock the secrets of human development.”

One day I discovered she was terribly upset. She tried turning notifications (通知) off. But the fear of missing out something important made her check the phone more often than before, and then she simply stopped using her phone.
Well, to tell the truth, it was not simple at all. For the first couple of days, she told me that she had a big fear that all of her friends would soon forget about her. Besides, when she had a free moment, she had no idea what to do, and the worries about missing something kept bothering her.
However, after three weeks without a mobile phone, I started noticing her changes. For example, I found she became much more focused (注意力集中的): Now, while doing something, she never wonders what is going on online like before.
Also, she told me she discovered that the world is a beautiful place. Before, she would look at it through her camera mostly:took a photo, posted it, got some likes. Now she saw beautiful people walking around and she could understand the actual (真正的) beauty of the world.

“To a person, nothing is more precious (珍贵的) than their life, and if they trust me with that life, how could I refuse that trust, saying I’m cold, hungry, or tired ” The words from Dr Lin Qiaozhi give us a look into the heart of this amazing woman.
Lin Qiaozhi was deeply influenced by her mother’s death, so she chose to study medicine at the age of 18 instead of getting married like most girls. “Why should girls learn so much Finding a good husband should be their final goal!” her brother complained. She replied, “I’d rather stay single to study all my life!”
Eight years later, Lin graduated from Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) and became the first female doctor in PUMC Hospital. Later, she was sent to study in Europe and the US. Her American workmates were so amazed that they invited her to stay, but she wanted to help women and children in her home country.
During the war, when the hospital closed, Dr Lin opened a private clinic (诊所). She often cut down the costs for the poor patients. She even travelled to villages to provide medical care.
After the war, she became a member of the first National People’s Congress and held many important positions. Her heart, however, was elsewhere. She was more interested in patient care, especially for women and children. She often reminded her team to treat the patients like family.

In the West, independence is very important. Parents prepare their kids for life. Then, after their kids grow up, they say goodbye and leave home. Later, the kids can choose to start a family or not. They don’t have to listen to their parents.
