Title PROMOTING CULTURETHROUGH DIGITAL IMAGES
A. Lead sentence Lanzhou, 9 August 2017. A group of researchers and scientists from China and other countries are working together to help increase knowledge and appreciation of China’s ancient cultural heritage. (Para 1)
C. Paraphrase They are recording and collecting digital images of cultural relics from the Mogao Caves, which were a key stop along the Silk Road throughout China’s ancient history. Nearly 500,000 high quality digital photographs have been produced since the international project started in 1994. (Para 1)
D. Background information The Mogao Caves have long been a meeting point for different cultures and are part of the history of many countries. (Para 2)
F. Words to show comparison and/or contrast Today, the caves are just as international as they were at the time when people travelled the Silk Road. (Tourists from all over the world visit Dunhuang to see the caves, and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles has even reproduced a copy of the caves and paintings for people to admire in America.) (Para 2)
E. Reporting verbs By sharing so many digital photos over the Internet, the group hopes to promote even wider interest around the world in China’s ancient history, culture, and traditions. They also hope to further educate people about the importance of safeguarding historic and cultural relics for future generations to understand and appreciate. As one researcher who is working on the project explains, “Appreciating one’s own cultural heritage is very important for understanding oneself. Appreciating the cultural heritage of other countries is very important for international communication and understanding.” (Para 3)
B. Direct quote
2. Underline the relative clauses that the writer uses to identify the following.
Things: They are recording and collecting digital images of cultural relics from the Mogao Caves, which were a key stop along the Silk Road throughout China’s ancient history.
People: As one researcher who is working on the project explains...
Time: Today, the caves are just as international as they were at the time when people travelled the Silk Road.
3. Summarize the basic structures and language features of a new report briefly.
一篇新闻报道要包括五个“W”和一个“H”,即“when,where,who,what,why”和“how”,即“新闻六要素”。
Step3 Writing
Activity 6 Writing guidance
1. Read the interview notes.
2. Guide the students to draft a new report with the help of the table.
Head line Lead sentence Write a title to get the readers’ attention. Tell the readers who, what, where, and why. A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS Chen Lei is a senior teacher who takes photos of old buildings in Wuhan in order to preserve the city’s cultural heritage.
Body Tell the reader the facts, details, examples, etc. Explain what the person or group does. Use relative clause. Use quotes and paraphrases. Every day, Chen Lei takes his camera and …
Ending End with a short summary to help the readers remember the main idea. Neither people nor building last forever, but Chen Lei’s photos can help us remember them.
3. Show the writing tips: Tips on how to write a news report
A news report is similar to a news article. It is the basic facts of a story that is currently happening or that just happened. Writing a news report is easy if you report on the subject clearly, conduct good interviews, and write in a style that is clear, concise, and active.
1) Write a headline. Your headline should be accurate, clear, and easy to understand. Use key words from the story and keep it straight and plain. Use active and short action verbs in your headline. The headline should accurately lead readers to what the report is about.
2) Write a byline (署名行) and place name. The byline goes directly underneath the headline. This is where you put your name and clarify who you are. The place name is where the article takes place and is written in all caps.
3) Use a hard news lead. Keep your lead to the point, fitting as much of the basic information as you can into your lead. A lead is only one or maybe two sentences and summarizes the news story.
4) Write the body of your report. This is going to consist of the facts, but more detailed and specific than in your lead. Use the information you collected and gathered at the scene and in interviews. Write your report in third person and from a neutral perspective. Make sure your story conveys information and not an opinion.
5) Include quotes in the news report. Always introduce who you are quoting followed by the exact words that they said. Use their full name the first time you mention them then only use their last name.
6) Always include attributions. Unless the information is common knowledge, always attribute (认为是…所为(或说、写、作)) where you got it. You can get in trouble for not giving credit to someone. This is also important in case a fact is wrong, then it will be known who got the fact wrong and that it was not you.
4. Get the students think how they will organize the writing and then read the sample writing.
Sample writing:
Headline: A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words
Lead sentence: Chen Lei, who is a senior teacher, takes high-quality photos of old buildings in Wuhan in order to preserve the city’s cultural heritage.
Body: Every day, Chen Lei takes his digital camera and walks patiently through the old city. Over the years,he has taken thousands of professional pictures of old buildings to create a record for his fellow citizens in the present and future. Another important part of his project is the interviews he conducts with elderly residents. He makes attempts to write stories about the old buildings and their inhabitants, which are quite popular. He also visits schools to tell students about cultural heritage.
Ending: Neither people nor buildings last forever, but Chen Lei’s photos can prevent us from forgetting them. Chen Lei’s great contributions are worth praising.
