By the end of this period, the students will have been able to:
1) Practise listening to an announcement about a school music festival and get some information about the music festival;
2) Learn how to talk about preferences and then talk about preferences and plan a music festival;
3) Learn about the usage of few new words.

Teaching and learning procedure:
Step 1 Review
Activity 1 Review
1. Revise the usages of past participle used as the predicative and the adverbial.
2. Check the answers to the grammar exercises in reference book.
3. Revise the new words learned in the previous period.
Step 2 Listening
Activity 2 Pre-listening
1. Introduce the background information.
Music festivals are popular around the world. There are festivals for many different genres of music, but many have a mixture of different genres. They usually take place over several days and visitors stay on the site. Festival sites are like a small village, with all needs catered for, from food to medicine.
2. Talk about musical festival to activate the students’ thinking by answering the following questions.
1) Have you ever attended a music festival If so, can you describe it (When, where, who, what, how…)
2) What can you think of if you were asked to plan a school music festival
What is the announcement about
When will the music festival be held
Where will it be held
Who will be involved in the festival

Activity 3 While-listening
1. Go through the listening tasks and questions before listening and get to know the meaning of new words.
(some new words: choir, equipment, talent)
2. Practice listening.
1) Listen to the announcement for the first time, answer the following questions to have a general idea of the listening text.
What is the announcement about (A music festival.)
When will the music festival be held (Next month.)
Where will it be held (On the school sports field.)
Who will be involved in the festival (Patty Williams, Grace Davis.)
2) Listen to the announcement again and tick the kinds of volunteers the festival needs.
¨ people to give music lessons
choir members
people to run food stands
people to sell festival tickets
¨ people to sell music CDs
¨ people to set up equipment
musical performers
3) Listen to the announcement once more and answering the questions for detailed information.
(1) What kind of songs will Grace Davis sing at the festival
She will sing English folk songs.
(2) Who can try out as a performer
Anyone with musical talent can try out as a performer.
(3) What can those who think they do not have musical talent do
They can help out by selling tickets or running a food stand.
(4) How can students volunteer to take part
Students can volunteer by getting in touch with their teacher.
Activity 4 Post-listening
Try to use the above information to reconstruct the listening text by summarizing the content of the text.
Step 3 Talking
Activity 5 Role-playing the conversation and learning about preferences
1. Role-play the conversation.
2. Learn and talk about preference and try to use these expressions.
Prefer:
Would you prefer doing… / What would you prefer to do /Do you prefer to… /I’d prefer it if …/I’d prefer…to…
Rather:
Would you rather do …or… / What would you rather do /I’d rather have…than…
Activity 6 Talking about preferences
1. Work in pairs to talk about what you would do at the music festival with the help of the questions, trying to use the expressions for preferences.
(1) Would you like to sing or play a musical instrument How else could you help in addition to what has already been mentioned
(2) Whom would you invite What other activities could you do at the music festival
Suggested answers:
(1) I would like to play a musical instrument like the piano. I can also volunteer to give people information about where to go and also to help tidy up after the festival.
(2) I would invite everyone from local schools and colleges as well as their families and friends. I can also do many artistic activities at the festival as well as eating and drinking food from different parts of the world.
2. Give a report to the class on what you would like to do at the music festival or your plan for a music festival.

Activity 7 Learning about the new words
Learn the usage of the new words.
1. set sth up安装好(设备或机器);建立;设立;创办
e.g. In order to make our school life more colourful, we have decided to set up a cycling club.
为了使我们的学校生活更加绚烂多彩,我们已经决定成立一个自行车俱乐部。
When the school is set up, the poor children will be educated there.

set phrases:
set down 写下,记下;放下

e.g. Do you know how to set about going on with this work 你知道如何着手进行这项工作吗?
You should set aside some time to participate in some out-of-class activities although occupied in studying. 尽管学习很忙,你也应该抽出一些时间参加一些课外活动。

5.assume vt.以为;假设;承担(生义)

e.g. It is generally assumed that we should well preserve those ancient buildings which are of great significance. 普遍认为我们应该保护好这些具有重要意义的古建筑。
