The URS Cafeteria opens from 7:00 a. m. to 8:00 p. m. It serves all kinds of snacks, drinks, ice cream and

The URS Express is a shuttle service. It transports students between campus and the Mattson Centre, the
nearest shopping center. Operation hours are between 9:00 a. m. and 3:00 p. m., Saturdays only. Round trip fare
is $2.
Academic Support
All students have access to the Writing Centre on the upper floor of Douglas Hall. Qualified volunteers
will work with you on written work, grammar, vocabulary, and other academic skills. You can sign up for an
appointment on the sign-up sheet outside the door, two 30-minute appointments per week maximum. The
service is free of charge.
Relaxation and Health
The Globe, located in the bottom level of McMillan Hall, is available for relaxing, studying, cooking, and
eating. Monthly activities are held here for all international students. Hours are 10:00 a. m. to 10:00 p. m.,
closed on Sundays.
The Fitness Centre is on the top floor of Douglas Hall. It is committed to physical, emotional, and social
health. A doctor and a nurse are available if you have health questions or need immediate medical help or
personal advice. The cost is included in your medical insurance. Hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 a. m. to 4:30
p. m

I was said to be the worst student in my class and my family thought I was hopeless. I had to repeat the
sixth grade. At that time a new teacher, Miss Sadia, came to our school.
One day after class, she noticed that I was staying alone during the lunch break. She came to me and began
to talk to me. It was just a normal conversation. After that day, she gave me much attention and it made me feel
special. I started to go all out because she gave me the feeling that someone believed me, and my grades started
to improve in her subject.
Months later, she moved into a house near my home. We would walk home together after school. Her
constant support helped me, especially in my studies, as I knew she would check my grades both in her subject
and the other subjects. I finally came second in my class.
Then, after the sixth grade, she started to drift apart but still kept a check on me. By the time I was in the
seventh grade, she hardly spoke to me, but by then I had become the best in my class. When I left school, I was
out of touch with her as she never answered the phone when I called her.

Then I graduated and went to a good university. One fine day, our paths crossed again. I met her at a

Learning a new language can be a big challenge at any age; however, it seems to be especially difficult to
master a foreign tongue as we age.
When we are growing up, we are building a language system in our mind, which allows us to communicate
freely. If we start a new language after youth, however, we are adding a new set of rules to our mind. That is
why we find it difficult to learn a new language—we’re building a new speech system when we are not young
any more. Why is it easier for kids to learn a new language Children are relatively more active, open-minded
and their language system is not fixed, meaning it is less work for them to pick up new things.
The good news is that learning a language isn’t really that hard if you’re opening your mind. But it does take
hard work and motivation to achieve your goals.
It’s important to remember what you’re actually learning is how to communicate in a new way with other
human beings. If you often share your daily experience with others in that language, what you’re learning is
related to you. For example, if I’m learning Italian, I would never remember how to say “Dove e la biblioteca ”
or “Where is the library ” but I will always remember how to say “Ti piace il caffe ” or “Do you like some
coffee ”
In addition, TV shows, films and video games in foreign languages are all great forms of entertainment for
learning a new language. Anything that relates you to the language and culture is great, so long as you find it
enjoyable.
Adding a single new word to your vocabulary can be interesting and rewarding. The road to fluency can be
hard, but the view along the way is really amazing, so it’s OK if you are driving slowly.

Online English has become a common language for users from around the world. In the process, the
language itself is changing. There are now thought to be some 4.5 billion web pages worldwide. Some language
experts predict that within 10 years English will occupy the internet — but in forms very different to what we
accept and recognize as English today.
That’s because people who speak English as a second language already outnumber native speakers. And
increasingly, they use it to communicate with other non-native speakers, particularly on the Internet where less
attention is paid to grammar and spelling and users don’t have to worry about their accent (口音).
Users of Facebook already socialize in a number of different “ Englishes ” including Indian English,
Spanish English and Korean English. While these different styles have long existed within their cultures, they’
re now expanding and coming online. Technology companies are introducing newly-developed English words
with products aimed at enabling users to add words that are not already in the English dictionary. And most
large companies have English websites, while smaller businesses are learning that they need a common
language — English — to reach global customers.
The increasing popularity of the internet allows more languages to develop quickly. “Most people actually
speak several languages — it’s less common to only speak one,” says Mr. Munro. “English has taken its
place as the world’s common language, but it’s not pushing out other languages.” Instead, other languages are
pushing their way into English, and in the process creating something new.

Handwritten Chinese characters can be beautiful. Living in a digital era with smartphones and computers,

many freshmen are confused about high school life, so don't worry about it too much. I'm writing
to offer you some useful advice.
To begin with, I suggest that you sign up for extra-curricular activities that/which can help
you make more new friends. What's more, it is also a good idea to make a reasonable schedule and
focus on your studies so that you can keep up with other classmates in the class. Last but not least,
you'd better prepare for the new lessons in advance.

I'm Lee Minwoo from the Republic of Korea. When I was little I was very interested in English. I
learned English at school. There was a good teacher who was not a native English speaker. He
taught French and German, but he really spoke English quite well. It was funny because I was the
only student in his class — it was really a private lesson. I had an excellent course book. I still
keep a copy of it. The front cover was red with a lovely picture. And it was very modern. Learning
English was quite easy for me because the teacher was so good and he helped a lot. Also,I'm quite
good at learning languages. It was really enjoyable to have English classes with the teacher. I
loved the sound of the words. I felt really proud when my spelling improved day by day and I
could read a short story. In the middle school, English was still my favourite subject. I even stayed
in America for one year as an exchange student. I learned a lot there, not only English but different
cultures.
