It is celebrated for over 2,000 years but was regarded as a festival during the Tang Dynasty (618—907).
The festival came from an old story. Long ago, a monster in the river made villagers ill. So Huan Jing, a brave boy, went to visit a master. The master said, “Tomorrow is the ninth day of September and the monster will come out of the river. You should stop it.” Huan Jing went home and told the villagers to climb up a mountain with a special plant on their clothes. The monster came out of the water the next day. There’s a small brick house I visit from time to time. It’s not the house that is special, but the person who lives inside.
I met Miss White about forty-five years ago when she was my sister’s kindergarten teacher, I remember wishing I was her student. Miss White created a safe place where we could be whatever we wanted to be at that moment. My parents promised me I could start school when I was 4. Though, when I turned 4 in spring, I couldn’t understand why I had to wait until September.
When I graduated, I became a teacher. I couldn’t wait to invite Miss White to my classroom. She arrived one day, and I saw joy on my students’ faces singing the same songs I sang with her as a child. As a new teacher, I was amazed by how she connected with children for years. Miss White volunteered in my classroom.
Over the years we have shared with each other’s ups and downs. She asks me about my family and friends, and she tells me about hers.
I am here for her now as the time to sell her house is near, I bring up boxes from her basement (地下室). We look through every painting a student has given her, every thank-you note a parent has written and her teaching aids (教具).
I find my own name printed in green marker. Suddenly, my mind goes back to Room 3.
More than 40 years ago, Miss White sat on a chair while my classmates, and I sat on the carpet (地毯) at her feet. We learned about the letters and their sounds. Now, Miss White sits on her rocking chair (摇椅), and I find myself sitting at her feet. Over tea, we talk for hours. I listen carefully because I know I still have more to learn from her.

Gestures are used to replace words in many countries. They usually have different meanings in different cultures. Let’s look at the three gestures.
What does the “O” gesture mean
If you are an English speaker or diving (潜水) under the sea, it means “OK” or “good”. In fact, it’s believed that this gesture is popularized (普及) by divers. The Japanese read it as “money”. The French read it as “zero” or “no value”.
What does the “thumb-up” gesture mean
This gesture also means differently in different countries. English speakers use it to stand for “OK”, which is the same meaning as the “O” gesture. The two can be used almost interchangeably.
To most people, it stands for the number “1”, since they count from 1 to 5, beginning with the thumb for 1 and ending with the little finger for the number 5.
Although Americans and British people usually ask for a ride with their thumbs raised, the gesture will not make a Greek driver stop to give them a ride.
What does it mean to extend (伸出) your index finger (食指)
Extending the index finger means different things in different countries. The Chinese extend their index finger upward to indicate (表明) the number. They can refer to integers (整数) such as “one”, “one hundred”, “one thousand”, etc. In Japan, the index finger up means only one or once. This gesture means the first in order. In the United States of America, use this gesture when asking the other person to wait. In Australia, in bars and restaurants, the index finger is extended upward, saying, “A glass of beer, please.”
In the Middle East, it is impolite to point at something with your index finger.

Although Jerry had achieved great success, he didn’t feel fulfilled. He asked himself, “Is it enough to climb the highest mountains Can I do anything helpful How can I turn my adventures into the things that can help the world ”
Jerry learned that scientists need plants, rocks and water samples (样本) from the places far away to do research. But scientists can’t get there themselves as such places are hard to reach—only the bravest adventurers can make it. Jerry thought he could do something to help. He then came up with an idea. He set up a team of top adventures to collect samples for scientists. By studying the samples, scientists could know more about the earth and find ways to protect it.
Recently Jerry and his adventurer friends have discovered a special plant on Mount Qomolangma. The samples they brought back have helped scientists know how plants live in extreme (极端的) conditions.
For Jerry, this kind of adventure is most pleasing. “Such adventures have made me see life in a different way. Now, being the best climber isn’t important for me. What matters is doing something helpful while climbing the mountains. There is still march more we can do.” Jerry said,

Dad recently read me a speech, hoping to satisfy my endless search for answers—answers to everything. Ever since I was very young, I’ve asked countless times “What should I do ”, trying to avoid making mistakes. Maybe I feared to take my first baby step on my own I think.
During my middle school years, I changed. It was when I decided to try for the lead in Beauty and the Beast without asking Dad for advice. Never mind that I would have to memorize lines and movements, and I would take the chance that I might fail.
On the day of audition(试镜), I kept telling myself, “If you don’t think you can do it the right way, just don’t go.” My heart was pounding; my hands were shaking so badly that I wasn’t certain whether people would hear me.
But something happened. When I opened my mouth, I found the sound was loud, powerful and sweet! And I even reached the high notes that I’d never reached! It was fantastic! I was trying bravely even though I might fail. But I didn’t. That audition wasn’t the end of the trap that kept me from trying, but it was definitely an important part of the process of growing.
That day, I realized that if I want to live my life to the fullest, I have to push myself. Because my parents, friends and teachers don’t always have the answer to “What should I do ”.
Now, I do take these chances, with baby steps, every day, like voicing my opinions in class discussions, riding my horse over a three-foot jump...

I like writing. I like meeting people. I couldn’t keep a secret if you told me and I like discovering new things and telling everyone about them. So I became a journalist(记者).
Sounds simple and easy, right But the life of a journalist is more exciting and much harder than that. It can come with pain and frustration(挫折).
Once I ran around in a dark, dangerous-looking street in the snow. I was trying to find a woman who (my editor had told me) “woke in the night to find water pouring on her head”. Somehow I found her. I took photos. I interviewed her, the building owner and the firemen. I wrote the story... Then I opened the paper to find it at the back, with no name on it, only 100 words long. Strangely, however, it made me want to keep going. If you succeed, the rewards of journalism are truly great.
I once wrote about an old people’s home. People there, including a 90-year-old blind man, were living in rooms that were full of fleas(跳蚤). They were told to do their own repairs. A week after the story was published, people there phoned me, full of joy. The managers had said sorry to them and promised to change their ways.
Journalism can be dangerous and boring, with long and changing work hours. And the pay (at least in the UK) is terrible. But it’s also one of the most exciting, rewarding jobs. For me, there is no better career than making a difference—and telling the world about it.

66.What can we learn from the article

We spoke to three students from around the world about different national holidays. There are different customs for each festival.
Xiaodong, 15, Hong Kong “It’ll soon be the Chinese New Year. Before it, we’ll clean the house and decorate it for good luck. Every shop is going to close for a few days and we’ll go out a lot to celebrate on the streets. We might go and see the lion and dragon dances in the city center. I love this festival.”
Wendy, 16, Sydney “Australia Day is on 26th January and it’s an important holiday here. We always have a Monday off, so we celebrate for three days. My parents and I go to the countryside for a picnic and friends always come over. Many people go to beach parties or street parties and there is quite a lot of music and dancing. What fun!”
Amy, 14, New York “The first Thanksgiving was celebrated hundreds of years ago when Europeans who came to America thanked God for his help. It’s still a very important day for families to be together. This year we’re going to visit my grandparents and we’ll eat a delicious meal of turkey. Thanksgiving Day is on the 4th Thursday in November every year.”
