Review the new language items and expressions learned in the previous period.

1. Lead in the topic by asking the following questions.
1) Have you ever read or written a blog post on the Internet
2) Is the language formal or informal
2. Introduce the learning objectives of this period.
Activity 3 Pre-reading
Introduce the background information about the Internet blog.
Originating in the 1990s with the early Internet, the “blog” has now become very popular on the Internet. “Blog” is a shortening of “web-log”. The old word “log” was an official record of events during a particular period of time, often used in the context of ships and journeys. Blog is both a noun and a verb.
There are many kinds of blog covering different topics and used for different things. One common example is a “live blog”, where an event will be written about online as it happens, often on a news-based website.
Activity 4 Reading comprehension
1. Read the blog post and answer the questions to comprehend the content of the blog post.
1) What’s the main idea of the blog post Write a title for it.
The blog post is about how to stay safe online and avoid bad experiences on the Internet.
Title: Online Safety/ How to stay safe online.
2) What guidelines does the author provide for staying safe online
First, leave immediately if you find something that makes you feel uncomfortable on the site. Second, protect your privacy. Third, be polite.
3) Who are the online troublemakers the blog post mentions
Three kinds of people: an identity thief, a troll, and a cyberbully.
4) Do you have any more tips for how to surf the Internet safely Share your ideas with a partner.
Don’t give your real name or personal details such as your age, address, or your school. Use a virus program to protect your computer from viruses or attacks.
2. Study the organization and language features by answering the following questions.
1) Tick what the writer tells the reader in Paragraph 1.

2) What words and phrases does the writer use to organise the information in the second paragraph

Troll and cyberbully. Use simple words and an explanation sentence to define “troll”. Define “cyberbully” by comparing it with “troll”.

By asking for comments.
3. Discuss the organization, structure and language features of a blog post.
The organization and structure:
Paragraph 1: Lead in the topic and introduce background information.
Paragraph 2: Give suggestions/tips. For each suggestion/tip. There is a key point in imperative sentence. And then the explanations are given to the key points in different ways.
Paragraph 3: End the blog by asking for comments.
The language features: Using informal, explanatory and descriptive language.

Activity 5 Writing preparation
1. Get the students to discuss and share their experiences online and advice for staying safe online.
2. Talk about how to use what has been learnt to write a blog post about online safety.
1) Choose one of the topics from online shopping sites, online shopping sites and online chat rooms and go through the notes.

Use a website you are familiar with. Use strong passwords. Don’t use public computers. Don’t post personal information. Don’t believe everything you read. Be polite. Don’t give out too much information. Never meet someone you met online alone.
2) Use the chart to organise first draft by listing the key points and then add more detailed information.
A sample:
Introduction Tell the reader about yourself and what you know about the topic. Hello everyone. I’m a senior high school student. Today I want to blog about something that I think is very important. Unfortunately, I know about this topic well because I made a silly mistake. That was to make my email password “password123”!
Body Tell the reader what they should do or keep in mind. Define new words or key terms. About six months ago, someone hacked my email account. That means they found out my password, then tried to use my account to take money from me and sent viruses to all my contacts! Luckily my friend told me when she got a strange email from me, so I changed my password immediately. I read about how to make a good password. A good one should have a mixture of both upper case (large capital) letters and lower case (small) letters, numbers, and other characters.

Summarize the main contents of this period briefly by reconstructing the text and emphasizing the structure, organization and language features of a blog post.
