James Gailey has already retired. At 80 years old, he was enjoying time in the North Texas community of Callisburg. It’s a small town, with a population of about 300 people. The local school district has two campuses, and supports over 1,100 students in the rural area.
Although Gailey had no intention of returning to the workforce, he had no choice when his monthly rent was raised by $400. Since he couldn’t afford that cost, “Mr. James,” as the students call him, went back to the local school and restarted working as a school janitor.
Three students decided that they could do something about this situation. Greyson Thurman, Banner Tidwell, and Marti Yusko created a GoFundMe web page and shared his story on TikTok. “No 80-year-old should have to work because they have to,” said Tidwell, “It should be because they want to do it. It bothered us that he had to have a place to work to keep his house.”
When the students started the campaign, their goal was to get Mr. James some extra money to help with his rent issues. The page was disabled only two weeks later, raising an impressive $270,000. “It’s amazing,” said Jason Hooper, the principal of Callisburg High School. “The need was met because of three kind kids—of all our students who offered help.” Many of the donations to the GoFundMe page are from students and staff at Callisburg, with most of them only $5 or $10 each.
“It is crazy to see something like that. We knew people would have wanted to help,” said Yusko, “We didn’t know it would blow up.”
At the time of researching and writing this story, Mr. James said that he was ready to return to retirement. “It’s what we’re about,” Hooper said, “We’re a small town. We’re family. We don’t always agree, but we love and help our own.”
24.James Gailey returned to work mainly because of ________.
A.his difficulty in paying his rent B.his boredom of the retiring life
C.his desire to continue his career D.his ambition to improve himself
25.What did the three kids do for James Gailey
A.Finding him a job at campus B.Giving him support for work.
C.Raising money on the website. D.Turning to the school principle.
26.How did Yusko feel after the campaign
A.Doubtful. B.Shocked. C.Regretful. D.Confused.
27.What can we learn from the story
A.It’s never too late to learn. B.A good turn deserves another.
C.Chance favors the prepared mind. D.A small act can make a difference.

Ponds are a rich source of biodiversity, providing natural environments for many rare and endangered species, including plants, insects, birds and bats. Ponds show far greater variation than rivers and streams. Yet, for a century or so, ponds have been ignored by scientists.
Why have we overlooked such a significant part of the natural world A key reason appears to be the cognitive bias (认知偏见) where we assume that if something is small, it can’t be all that important. Rather than study ponds, biologists in the past typically headed for the largest lake or river they could find. Most of us also devalue ponds because we assume they are human-made habitats and don’t realize that these waters have a deeply ancient origin. Ponds have clearly existed on Earth as long as there has been land and water and the geological record shows they have been a long-lasting presence.
Ignoring ponds within science has had a big impact on our ability to protect their wildlife. It has created a world view in which policy-makers can simply ignore the big networks of ponds that make up so much of the global water environment. In Europe, for example, the Water Framework Directive mostly excludes (把...排除在外) any bodies of water smaller than 50 hectares.
Fortunately, views are changing. Last year, the Ramsar Convention, an international agreement, introduced a resolution (决议) on small wetlands, including ponds, giving more recognition to them. And the European Union-funded PONDERFUL project is gathering data on Europe’s ponds.
However, if we want to make use of the biodiversity power that ponds offer, there remains much to do. In a world where fresh water faces big challenges, creating and protecting ponds provides a ray of hope: a piece of natural ecological engineering we can easily achieve to help support biodiversity.
28.What can be learned about ponds from paragraph 1
A.They are difficult to research.
B.They fail to get enough attention.
C.They are too small to support wildlife.
D.They have greater importance than rivers.
29.What does the cognitive bias assume
A.Ponds are short-lived. B.Rivers are fully-developed.
C.Small things are unimportant. D.Natural habitats are unnoticed.
30.Why is the Water Framework Directive mentioned in paragraph 3
A.To solve a problem. B.To present a fact.
C.To prove a point. D.To make a comparison.
31.What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A.Exploring ponds has a long way to go. B.Ecological diversity is easy to realize.
C.Fresh water supply can meet our needs. D.Building ponds can promote economy.

We know it can be hard to put your phone to bed before you sleep. However, if you’re trying to improve your sleep, you really should ditch your phone at least an hour before bedtime. Luckily, our experts can help.
Scientific evidence suggests that the blue light emitted from your phone, tablet, computer, and TV suppresses (抑制) your body’s production of melatonin, a hormone (荷尔蒙) that plays an important role in your sleep cycle. Melatonin release in the evening helps you relax before bedtime. A 2013 study that analyzed technology use and sleep patterns with data from a National Sleep Foundation poll found that using devices like phones was tied to more sleep disruption than electronics that aren’t interactive.
Many of us use the excuse that our mobile devices serve as our wake-up calls, or keep them nearby to use meditation apps. If you want to use your phone as an alarm, consider setting it a couple of hours before you turn in for the night, and then setting the phone itself to bedtime mode for the rest of the evening.
Here’s another groundbreaking idea: You could get a real alarm clock. After reviewing them at Reviewed, we recommend the Sharp Dream Caster. Not only is it easy to set a wake-up time, the clock includes white noises and rain noises to help you sleep, plus a number of volume settings to pick what works best for you.
But an alarm clock won’t help you avoid doom-scrolling through social media. Take things a step further by avoiding using electronic devices. You can try reading a book (one made of paper), taking a bath or drinking a cup of chamomile tea.
Finally, if you want to keep up your meditation practice screen-free, consider the Morphée. It looks like a little music box and comes with a variety of breathing exercises and soundscapes to help you get to sleep.
32.What does the underlined word “ditch” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A.Set aside. B.Pick up. C.Show off. D.Turn to.
33.What may be caused by the suppression of melatonin
A.Relaxing yourself before bedtime.
B.Sleeping less than you normally would.
C.Adapting to your sleep cycle more easily.
D.Reducing the pressure from screen use.
34.Why is the Sharp Dream Caster recommended
A.It is sold at a lower price. B.It can predict a heavy rain.
C.It is controlled by cellphone. D.It benefits your sleep.
35.What is suggested for better sleep according to paragraph 5
A.Making the best of the eco-friendly products.
B.Making a change according to circumstances.
C.Establishing a bedtime routine without electronics.
D.Keeping a consistent bedtime and wake-up time.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many students study by reading their notes and textbooks over and over again. But studies show there are more effective ways to help you study smarter.
36 Many students know what they are expected to do. Yet many often fail to plan ahead. So they need first to set a reachable target. Break it into pieces and make them happen one by one. It may seem strange at first. But after two weeks or more, it becomes a normal thing.
Don’t just reread. 37 Rereading is like looking at the answer to a puzzle, rather than doing it yourself. It looks like it makes sense. But until you try it yourself, you don’t really know if you understand it.
Find examples. Abstract concepts can be hard to understand. It tends to be far easier to form a mental image if you have a concrete example of something. 38 On its own, that concept might be hard to remember. But if you think about a lemon or vinegar, it becomes easier!
Dig deeper. It’s hard to remember countless facts and figures if you don’t push further. Ask why things are a certain way. How did they come about Why do they matter Psychologists call this elaboration(深究). It’s taking class material and asking many how and why questions about it. 39
Practice more. Musicians practice their instruments. Athletes practice sports skills. 40 In a study, students took practice tests over several weeks. On the final test, they scored more than a full letter grade better, on average, than did students who studied the way they normally had.
As a teen, Cynthia Nebel studied by reading her textbooks, worksheets and notebooks. “Over and over and over again,” recalls this psychologist at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. Now, she adds, “we know that’s one of the most common bad study skills that students have.”
A.Make a budget and save it.
B.Make a plan and stick to it.
C.The same should go for learning.
D.However, not all can apply to students.
E.In other words, don’t just accept facts at face value.
F.Sadly, reading books and notes repeatedly is common for many students.
G.For example, sour foods usually taste that way because they contain an acid(酸).

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.(紧盯某人,纠缠不放)
One day, Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

Dear Frank,
It’s amazing that you’re interested in the popular Chinese Poetry TV Competition and want to take part in it. I’m more than delighted to offer you some tips.
First of all, you should surf the Internet to learn about the brief history of Chinese poetry to get a better understanding of it. The resources are available on many relevant websites. Additionally, you had better recite as many poems as possible and seek help from teachers, which will enable you to enlarge your knowledge about Chinese poetry. More importantly, watching previous events will make you get familiar and well prepared so that you will not feel stressed or anxious during the fiercely-competitive process.
Hope these suggestions will help you get started. Good luck in the competition.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead. Refusing to give up at this point, he jumped to his feet and ran as fast as he could. He dashed across the finish line and won the fourth prize. Thinking he would let her sister down, Ali couldn’t help sobbing. Just then he suddenly heard the announcement from the broadcast that he won the third prize as the runner who collided with Ali was disqualified for breaking the rule. Holding the shoes close to his chest during the award ceremony, Ali felt overjoyed and relieved as he eventually won the shoes for his sister.
Paragraph 2:
Filled with delight, Ali walked home quickly. He could not wait to see his sister and share the thrilling news. On his arrival, Ali found Zahra was waiting outside. She was really nervous whether her brother had brought her what she was expecting. “Zahra, see what I have got for you.” he took the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. The instant Zahra saw the shoes, her face lit up. So thrilled was she that she threw herself at Ali. “Thank you! Ali.” Tears of joy welled up their eyes as the brother and sister hugged tightly together.

M: No. It probably means they have a large apartment. Probably a living room, kitchen and three bedrooms. They need someone for the empty bedroom.
W: Sounds good to me. I really appreciate your help on this.
M: My pleasure. What are friends for anyway
Text 10
W: Good evening, everyone. If this is the first time for you to come to our library as a new student, let me tell you a bit about the services we offer here. The library has four reading rooms. On the first floor is the No.1 Reading Room, which is for newspapers and magazines. On the second floor, on the left as you go up the stairs, is the No.2 Reading Room, which has books written in foreign languages. Immediately above it on the third floor is the No.4 Reading Room, for works in Chinese. The No.3 Reading Room on the second floor is for the use of teachers and graduate students. There is also a Reference Materials Center on the third floor which is for teachers only. Each student is given five library cards for borrowing books and one for magazines. Of the five cards for books, only one can be used to borrow works of history. Books can be kept for up to a month and magazines for two weeks.
