Living in Iowa and trying to become a photographer specializing in landscape (风景) can be quite a challenge, mainly because the corn state lacks geographical variation (变化).
Although landscapes in the Midwest tend to be quite similar, either farm fields or highways, sometimes I find distinctive character in the hills or lakes. To make some of my landscape shots, I have traveled up to four hours away to shoot within a 10-minute time frame. I tend to travel with a few of my friends to state parks or to the countryside to go on adventures and take photos along the way.
Being at the right place at the right time is decisive in any style of photography. I often leave early to seek the right destinations so I can set up early to avoid missing the moment I am attempting to photograph. I have missed plenty of beautiful sun sets and rises due to being on the sport only five minutes before the best moment.
One time my friends and I drove three hours t0Devil’s Lake, Wisconsin, to climb the purple quartz(石英) rock around the lake. After we found a crazy-looking road that hung over a bunch of rocks, we decided to photograph the scene at sunset. The position enabled us to look over the lake with the sunset in the background. We managed to leave this spot to climb higher because of the spare time until sunset.
However, we did not mark the route(路线)so we ended up almost missing the sunset entirely. Once we found the place, it was stressful getting lights and cameras set up in the limited time. Still looking back on the photos, they are some of my best shots though they could have been so much better if I would have been prepared and managed my time wisely.

A team of scientists is studying the sound of the forest in Ecuador to learn how artificial intelligence (Al) could follow animal life in recovering/environments
When scientists want to measure new forest growth, they can study large areas of land with tools like satellites. But understanding how fast and in what number wildlife is returning to an area is more difficult. Sometimes it requires an expert to listen through sound recordings and pick out animal calls.
Jorg Muller, an expert on birds, wondered if there was a different way. So, he turned to bioacoustics (生物声学), which uses sound to learn more about animal life and their living environments. Muller and his team recorded wildlife sounds in Ecuador. They first had experts listen to the recordings and list the sounds of different animals. Then, they examined the sound quality to measure the environment. Finally, they ran two weeks of recordings through an AI computer program trained to understand 75 different bird calls.
The program was able to pick out the calls on which it was trained. However, scientists wondered if the program could correctly identify the number of different kinds of plants and animals in each environment. To see if the program could do that, the team used two different controls. One was from the experts who listened to the recordings, and the second was based on examples from each environment, which can be used to understand biodiversity (生物多样性) .
Since the number of sounds that are found to be used to train is limited, the Al program could only identify one-fourth of the bird calls experts could. But it was still able to correctly measure biodiversity levels in each environment, the study said. It also said the results show the Al program is a powerful tool to measure the recovery of animal societies in some forests. The study showed that biodiversity found from recordings can be measured in a cost-effective and complete way and measure environments.
There are still areas for improvement, including the lack of animal sounds on which to train Al models. And the method can only catch animals that use sound to communicate.

Do you remember what you had for dinner two weeks ago today What about two years ago For most people, recalling such details is a challenge, but it’s a different story for individuals with hyperthymesia (Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory, HSAM). This rare condition, allows them to clearly remember numerous life experiences, including specific dates, times, locations and even small details from many years ago. As of 2021, only 62 people worldwide have been identified with this ability.
However, memories recalled by HSAM individuals are highly self-centered: they can only remember past experiences and details about themselves. Yet their ability to memorize impersonal information, such as random lists of words, appears to be no better than average. Unlike others with exceptional memory, HSAM individuals do not rely on specific memory strategies to remember information. Their recall is often described as an “involuntary” process. where memories come to mind without effort or conscious awareness.
While HSAM may seem like a desirable ability, it can also be a liability for those who possess it. People with HISAM may find it difficult to forget painful or negative experiences, which can potentially lead to anxiety and depression. They may also struggle to remain focused on the present moment, as their-minds are constantly flooded with memories from the past.
Despite brain scans failing to reveal significant physical differences, researchers believe people with HSAM possess distinct thinking patterns and habits that contribute to their remarkable memory abilities. Specifically, they show high- concentration levels and a tendency for fantasy (想象) allowing them to think about past experiences repeatedly and thereby strengthening their ability to recall memories. Unlike the average person who may experience this process after significant events, HSAM individuals do so day in and day out throughout their lives. McGaugh. a research professor in neurobiology and behavior at the University of California, says that further research on HSAM may provide new insights into how the brain stores and retrieves (检索) memories, potentially helping the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of memory loss.

Instead of burying myself in my phone, I focused on something else: my surroundings. The redwoods and river were breathtaking. Without my phone, I noticed the sunlight through the leaves, the wind in the branches, and the birds' songs. Walking by the river, I felt the sun and the cool water, experiencing nature deeply. W: Well, I want to go climbing with Jacques. You wouldn’t mind, would you
M: Of course not! I might even come with you. Now, we should get going. Let’s get everything into the car.

M: Josie, do you remember Jeff in my office
W: Yeah. I have seen him before at your party, and you have told me something about him.
M: He left last week.
W: Left Really Do you know why
M: He didn’t come in by Tuesday, so on Tuesday afternoon I called to see whether he was off the day or he was sick.
W: And what did he say
M: No answer. I talked to my boss, and it seems that he tried to call Jeff the morning before me. But he couldn’t get through either.
W: Strange.
M: Anyway, by the end of the day, Jeff sent an e-mail explaining everything.
W: An e-mail So, why did he leave
M: Well, he found a new job last month, but he forgot to tell us about it.
W: You’re joking! How can anyone do that

W: Well, my name is Cindy and recently, I’ve finished a tour which is not the type of thing I’d usually go for. But because we won it, we didn’t have to pay anything. We didn’t get off to a good start, though, because the bus from the airport to the hotel was awful. It took ages. The trip was all-inclusive, so all drinks and meals were included in the price. The drinks were fantastic! The hotel food was either tasteless or too hot, but the waiters were all friendly and knowledgeable at least. John decided he wanted to take a trip to a museum, so I went along. Actually, I didn’t really like it. It was pretty disappointing. I surely preferred being near the ocean. The beach was amazing and I went there several times. In the second week, John went off on his own into the mountains, but I stayed in the hotel. I once tried going on an elephant ride, but it was terrible. Elephants frightened me, so I gave up. The two weeks went by so quickly. We got back last night and, all in all, I think it was a great trip, really relaxing. I’m so glad we entered the competition
