As a child, I was proud of my southern origin (身世). My own voice showed my family’s past and present —part northern Mississippi, part Tennessee, all southern. There was no sound I loved more than my grandmother’s accent (口音)—thick, sweet and warm.
While growing up, I was ready to leave behind my tiny town in West Tennessee, starting a new life and jumping at big chances in some far-off cities. During the embarrassing space between “teen” and “adult”, my accent was a symbol of everything I thought I hated about my life in the rural South. I feared it would stop me from being a successful magazine writer, and I would have to talk less “country”. So I killed a piece of myself. I’m not ashamed of it, but I’m more ashamed that I tried to kill that part of someone else —change Emily’s accent.
I met Emily in college. She was determined to work for the student newspaper, which was where I spent most of my waking hours, and we became friends. She, unlike me, accepted her roots. Early in our friendship, her mother asked where I was from, thinking it was somewhere up north. Then I felt my efforts paid off and even wanted to ignore (忽视) the mistake.
Emily is two years younger and she cared about my opinion. I advised her to be more like me and hide her strong Manchester accent. I stressed (强调) that throughout our college years, often by making fun of her vowel sounds. I told myself I was helping her achieve her dream of working as a reporter. Now, I see that it was actually about making it reasonable to hide part of myself.
Grandma Carolyn used to tell me, “Girl, don’t forget where you come from.” Now I truly understand that. Many things have faded from memory, but this sticks in my mind with uncomfortable clarity. Now that I am grown and have left the South, it’s important to me.
24.What influenced the author’s decision to change her accent
A.Her desire for the northern accent.
B.Her anxiety to live in far-off cities.
C.Her wish to honor her grandmother.
D.Her dream of becoming a successful writer.
25.How did the author feel about the mistake of Emily’s mother
A.Annoyed. B.Pleased. C.Ashamed. D.Surprised.
26.Why on earth did the author try to change Emily’s accent
A.To prove herself right. B.To help Emily be a reporter.
C.To improve her influence. D.To protect Emily’s self-confidence.
27.What message does the text want to convey
A.Stay true to your roots. B.Never do things by halves.
C.Hold on to your dreams. D.Never judge a person by his accent.

Keeping a language alive can strengthen people’s feeling of self and most importantly help to save a whole culture. This is probably why a group of Cherokee music artists decided to make a music album only in the Cherokee language, a very rare Native American language.
The album (专辑), titled DOAP oa V and pronounced “Ah” “Nuh” “Duh” “Nah” “Lees” “Gi”, means “Performers” in English. It includes a variety of modern styles, such as Pop, Reggae, Country, Heavy Metal, Hip Hop, and Folk. With a planned release (发布) date of Labor Day weekend, the record company is using the National Cherokee Holiday to make this album as well-known as possible.
Jeremy Charles, a key figure in starting this album, has said that the “music will bring attention to Cherokee artists and speakers, and help more people around the world learn about our culture and language.” He hopes the album will encourage the next generation of Cherokee language learners. With 12 Cherokee artists from ages 14 to 50, you can see how this album will do a lot to spread Cherokee music and can inspire people of any age to create music that connects with their roots.
Projects like the DOAP oa V album bring a modern way to revitalize the Cherokee language and culture and encourage a younger audience to join in and start learning the language. On average, a native language is lost forever every two weeks, and these people want to make sure that the Cherokee language isn’t one of them.

A.It has various musical styles. B.It is titled Performers in English.
C.It sings high praise of Labor Day. D.It was shown to the public by chance.
29.What’s Jeremy Charles’s expectation of the album
A.It will satisfy the fans’ demand for pop music.
B.It can help the 12 artists become famous overnight.
C.It will make a lot of money for the record company.
D.It can increase the youth’s interest in the Cherokee language.
30.Which can best replace the underlined word “revitalize” in the last paragraph
A.Translate. B.Review. C.Renew. D.Create.
31.What’s the best title of the text
A.Alarming! The Cherokee Language is Dying
B.Amazing! An 8th Grader is Releasing an Album
C.Bringing Music to Life with Modern Technology
D.Saving a Language Through the Power of Music

F. Scott Fitzgerald was a famous American writer known for his incredible stories. Born on September 24, 1896, he was once a student of St. Paul Academy, the Newman School and attended Princeton University for a short while. In 1917, he joined the army and was sent to Alabama, where he met his future wife, Zelda Sayre. He wanted to earn money to impress Zelda and his life with her was full of great happiness.
This Side of Paradise, his first novel, was published in 1920.Encouraged by its success, Fitzgerald began to spend more time on his writing. Then he continued with the novel The Beautiful and Damned (1922), a collection (作品集) of short stories Tales of the Jazz Age (1922), and a play The Vegetable (1923). As her illness got worse, he got totally addicted to alcohol (酒精), which made it harder for him to write regularly.

Hanfu, the traditional clothing of the Han ethnic group, has been gaining popularity in recent years. There are now many more styles to choose from. To satisfy the different tastes of today’s youth, sellers are adding fancy (花哨的), modern touches to this ancient clothing.
Some hanfu clothes have a colorful and shiny look because special powders are pressed into the cloth. Modern materials like chiffon, which is light and soft, are also used in hanfu. Shiny decorations, called paillettes, are added to the dresses to make them sparkle.
Although the young fans of hanfu generally agree there’s no need to strictly follow the ancient rules, their opinions differ greatly. Qing Zhi, a university student, said hanfu is only a kind of clothing. She can match hanfu from different dynasties together, or with modern clothing, according to her own preferences. However, the shape of each piece of hanfu she wears should still follow history. Da Fan, 24, sees it differently. She said clothing with fancy and overused modern decorations can’t be seen as hanfu at all.
Meanwhile, fans disagree on how often one should wear the clothing. Qing Zhi wears hanfu every day, while Wu Yue, another hanfu fan, said the clothing should not be worn daily.
In Wu’s view, hanfu should be saved for special events like festivals and weddings. “Only when it has a purpose, does hanfu have real life,” she said.
Han Hua, a fellow from Chongyang Research Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China, views the adaptation (改造) to hanfu as natural.“I think people dressed in hanfu can have their own choices, whether sticking to the very traditional style, or whether having them modernized,” she said. “Both sides are OK, or there may even be a third side that introduces some modern elements, or some Western elements into hanfu. I’m totally fine with that. I only hope that there won’t be any arguments, and there will be respect for each other’s choices.”
36.What do we know about hanfu from the first two paragraphs
A.It changes with modern times. B.It feels nice and is easy to wear.
C.It attracts people of different ages. D.There are strict rules for making it.
37.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The history of hanfu. B.The debate over hanfu’s adaptation.
C.Some rules of matching hanfu. D.Different views on the popularity of hanfu.
38.What does Wu Yue think of hanfu
A.It doesn’t fit with modern living. B.It is acceptable for people to wear it daily.
C.It is a good choice for special events. D.Modern decorations make it more lively.
39.What can we infer from Han Hua’s words
A.Different forms of hanfu can live together.
B.It is hard to predict the development of hanfu.
C.Hanfu helps pass on traditional Chinese culture.
D.Adding Western elements to hanfu is the best choice.
