The Lihou Tiger is a cloth tiger toy. Known as “China’s No.1 tiger”, it developed from a tradition of using tigers as totems (图腾) during the Shang and Zhou periods.
The Lihou Tiger is produced in Licheng, Shanxi. According to studies, the toy got its name because Licheng used to be the land of Lihou during the Shang and Zhou periods. And they believe that the name is related to the town of Lihou which is the main production area of the Lihou Tiger.
The Lihou Tiger is quite different from those made elsewhere. It always has a fat, round shape and bright colors. In Licheng, a full month or 100 days after a child is born, his grandmother will make it by hand for the child, hoping that he will be as strong as a tiger. In the other places of Shanxi, a tiger is also a lucky animal for children. It shows strength, courage and health.
For centuries, the Lihou Tiger was popular in Licheng and neighboring areas, but it was little known outside Shanxi. This changed when the stamps of the Lihou Tiger were issued (发行) in 1998. It was later shown in Beijing to celebrate the opening of the 2008 Olympic Games, and quickly attracted wide attention. I’m Bessy. I began to learn English in Grade 6, not like most of my friends who have been learning English since kindergarten (幼儿园) or at least in Grade 3. I fell in love with this foreign language at once. As an old saying goes, “Interest is the best teacher.” I began to be crazy about English. I learned words and grammar, made sentences, wrote essays and read English storybooks as many as I could.
Some of my friends find it easy to forget the words they learned the other day. So do I! You can’t remember words well without using them often. So you should turn to a dictionary for help when you meet new words and want to know their other meanings and usages. Then make your own sentences from time to time. Another way to keep new words in mind is reading articles. You can easily remember new words through context.
As for spoken English, I’m lucky to have some foreign friends. So I have more chances to improve my spoken English. If you want to communicate with foreigners, don’t be shy, and just practice with anyone who knows English.

Students from Tsinghua University recently enjoyed a special musical play, which tells the story of a student who faces many challenges when he invents musical robots in a lab. The musical drama was performed by both human actors and robots.
The three Moja band members are Yuheng, Yaoguang and Kaiyang. They play traditional Chinese musical instruments ---bamboo flute, konghou and drums.

Summer 2022 was a hard time for many. Huge heat waves (热浪) swept across European countries and parts of China. They brought extreme (极端) high temperatures and drought (干旱).
Europe has experienced its hottest summer since 1979. In Spain, temperatures quickly increased past 40℃ and it was one of the hottest summers on record. In Italy and Greece, temperatures hit 38℃ or more. Europe also experienced its most serious drought in 500 years. The dry conditions led to wildfires. The lack of rainfall caused water shortages (缺乏). As a result, water uses became a big problem. Back in China, similar things happened in the summer. Heat waves hit many places across the country. Chongqing’s highest temperature reached 45℃, breaking its historical record. In August, more than 20 forest fires happened in the area.
Heat waves are more harmful than you might expect. If people stay in high temperatures for too long, the heat will harm their bodies and make people feel sick, pass out or even die. During the 2003 heat wave in Europe, about 70,000 people died. Besides this, heat waves make some infectious diseases (传染病) even more serious.
What caused the extreme weather event Scientists said climate change was likely to be the reason. Countries and organizations are taking action to deal with it. The European Union has set its goal to achieve net-zero emissions (净零排放) by 2050. China also has the goal of peaking carbon dioxide emissions (碳排放达到峰值) before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality (碳中和) before 2060. We think of hospitals as being peaceful and safe places. But in the past few years, doctors and nurses in Chinese public hospitals have been aimed by violent(暴力的) attacks. A study that came out in 2018 showed that one in four doctors in China has suffered physical violence, with some even lose lives.
To prevent such things from happening, the government worked out a draft(草案) law and put it up for review on Oct 22nd. It says that, the safety of medical staff is protected by law and that no one is allowed to hurt medical workers, the Beijing News reported.
In most cases, the attackers were relatives of patients who were not satisfied with their treatment. Most people have high expectations for their doctors. But of course, not every illness can be cured, China Youth Daily noted.
A general lack(缺少) of trust in doctors has also made things worse. Giving doctors cash bribes(现金贿赂) for good treatment has long been an unwritten rule. Some people believe that they may have received useless treatment because they didn’t bribe their doctors. In some cases, their anger in this situation turns into violence.
Another problem is a lack of doctors. Doctors in large public hospitals are often stretched thin(不堪重负的), seeing as many as 60 or more patients in just half a day. It’s difficult for them to provide enough care for each patient.
Hospitals are trying to find ways to solve these problems. For example, many hospitals have set up offices to hear and deal with patients’ complaints, Xinhua reported.
When some unexpected things happen, patients should ask the experts or the special organizations for advice instead of turning to violence, the State Council said.

Learning Chinese is a challenging but good experience as it gives you the opportunity to communicate with more than a billion people.
Foreigners think Chinese is a mysterious and difficult language because it is very different from the Roman alphabet (罗马字母). In fact, Chinese is not much more difficult than learning any other language. One reason is that Chinese does not have the kind of complex tenses (时态) like European languages.
Although it is certainly not easy for foreigners, in my experience you can learn Chinese fast. You will certainly find differences between the language in textbooks and people’s everyday speech. One example of this is the differences between language on the street, written Chinese, and Internet culture. It produces new phrases and vocabulary. In the real life nowadays, people often use short, less conversational phrases(词组) to communicate with each other. China has many provinces and their dialects are different. After you learn and understand-the-Beijing dialect, you may find it is hard to understand Shanghai dialect.
The language continues developing. So it is still not easy for learners, no matter how well they learn from textbooks.
I hope that one day more Chinese courses are able to connect with “real” spoken Chinese and the way in which Chinese people speak daily. It will help foreign learners to be, able to really communicate with the local Chinese.
