Period one Pronunciation, Words & Expressions
【设计意图】
本节课旨在通过单词讲解,帮助学生熟悉本单元词汇,为后续学习打下基础。讲解过程中,向学生初步介绍构词法,如“前缀”“后缀”的概念和作用,使学生掌握高考高频词的常见用法,同时注重激发学生兴趣,避免教学过程枯燥。考虑到单元的整体性,将教材中的 pronunciation 部分提前进行练习,先正音,再朗读单词。

Step I Lead-in
Show a famous quote: "Where there is a will, there is a way." Who said it and what does it mean This is our first class together. Let's make the most of it. Now, since we are new to each other, would you please introduce yourself to the class Here is the format for your introduction:
Encourage students to introduce themselves. Let them start in groups and then present to the whole class.
Step II Pronunciation
Pronouncing words accurately helps others understand you better. Let's start our practice.
Listen and repeat. Pay attention to the pronunciation of the vowels (A, E, I, O, U). Then add more words to each group.

Try to pronounce the following words. Focus on the pronunciation of the bold letters.

Present the pronunciation rules to the class. Meanwhile, summarize the pronunciation rules of words ending with the letter "E" that is not pronounced.

Summary:
A, E, I, O, U are five of the 26 English letters.
A, E, I, O, U often pronounce their original sounds in stressed open syllables.
In absolute open syllables (stressed), such as "he", "she", "me", "hi", "go", "no", they usually pronounce their original sounds.
In relative open syllables (stressed), they often pronounce their original sounds, commonly seen in combinations like "vowel letter + consonant letter + e".
Step III Word Transformation
Allow students a few minutes to pronounce all the words in the vocabulary. Then listen to the recording to correct their pronunciation.
Present the key words for learning to the class. Let them work in groups and choose one. Look up the chosen word in the dictionary. Confirm its various word forms and common usages. Try to create mind maps to make the word forms and usages easier, clearer, and more logical to understand.

Observe the following word forms. Add more word transformations to the list.
Verb → Noun

Summary: After a verb, adding "tion", "ation", "sion", "ment", "er" or "or" can turn it into a noun. Please note the following rules:

(rule: verbs ending with "e" drop the "e" before adding "ion")
admit—admission permit—permission
(rule: verbs ending with "mit" change "mit" to "mission")
invite—invitation pollute—pollution
(rule: verbs ending with "te" change "te" to "tion")

Please summarize the rules of these word transformations with your partners. Then we can change the word forms based on these rules in the future.
Summary:
Adding "ed" or "ing" after a verb turns it into an adjective. The "ed" form indicates "being...", and the "ing" form indicates "causing...".
Adding "al" after a noun turns it into an adjective.
Adding "ity" after an adjective turns it into a noun, but pay attention to the details.
Words ending with "ent" are mostly adjectives. To change them into nouns, we can change "ent" to "ence".
Adding "ful" after a noun turns it into an adjective, meaning "full of". For example, "care" becomes "careful" (full of care).
Adding "less" after a noun turns it into an adjective, meaning "without". For example, "hope" becomes "hopeless" (without hope).

Step IV Word Learning
For each word, the teacher first asks the class about its main meaning and usages. Then the students provide the explanations. Finally, complete the test individually or in pairs.
