Despite being one of the most famous and most-visited attractions in the United States, Grand Canyon National Park still holds some surprises. Here are a few facts about the Grand Canyon you probably don’t know.
We don’t really know how old it is
It has long been believed that the Colorado River began carving the Grand Canyon about 6 million years ago, but a study contained a real shocker, suggesting that the process may have begun as far back as 70 million years. In all likelihood, the Grand Canyon as we know it today started out as a series of smaller canyons 70 million years ago, but the majority of the canyon did not begin to take shape until much more recently.
The Grand Canyon creates its own weather
Of all Grand Canyon facts, this one is pretty cool — no pun (双关语) intended. Sudden changes in elevation (海拔) have great effects on temperature and rainfall, so the weather you’re experiencing could change largely depending on where you are in the Grand Canyon. The coldest, wettest weather station in the area is the Bright Angel Ranger Station on the North Rim, while the hottest (and one of the driest) is just 8 miles away at Phantom Ranch.
There are lots of fossils in the area
While the dinosaurs might have missed out on seeing the Grand Canyon, lots of other fossils have been found that suggest other creatures often visited the area. They range from ancient marine fossils dating back 1.2 billion years to fairly recent land mammals that left their remains in canyon caves about 10,000 years ago.
Fish are relatively uncommon in the area
Prior to modern flood control measures, the Colorado River provided a uniquely difficult habitat for fish, with heavy silt, frequent floods, and temperatures ranging from extreme heat in summer to sub-freezing in winter. As a result, only eight fish species are native to the Grand Canyon, six of which are found nowhere outside of the Colorado River.
21. What is the weather like in the Great Canyon
A. It is pretty cool. B. It is extremely hot.
C. It is unusually cold. D. It changes from place to place.
22. Why are fish relatively unusual in the area
A. It has a special geological phenomenon.
B. The temperature here is relatively stable.
C. It offers tough habitats for fish with extreme temperature.
D. There are eight fish species unique to the world.
23. Which section of a magazine is the text most likely from
A. Geography. B. Life. C. Stories. D. Science.
B
Having grown up in northern Arizona with the Grand Canyon and the plateaus of Sedona in my backyard, I believed that the southwestern state was home to the most beautiful landscapes on the planet. I spent many a youthful day fantasizing that my cozy valley was a flatland base, protected all around by mountain titans and with an infinite blue sky that promised impossible potential for exploration. These scenes are permanently in printed on my mind, forever the litmus test (试金石) for comparing the beauty of newly discovered sights. Thus far, no landscapes had come close.
That is, until I was invited to explore Guizhou province by the China Storyteller Partnerships Tour. Had someone articulately described how beautiful Guizhou can be in poetic detail, they would not have done it justice. There is no substitute for seeing with one’s own eyes. I will attempt to do so here.
My father used to drag my brothers and me on yearly fishing trips around Arizona. We would compete to catch the largest fish, which we jokingly called “Jeffs”. I recall sitting in a small boat in the middle of the lake, fishing pole limp in my impatient hands while my father attempted to share with me the whispers of the wind, a fish dancing on the surface of the lake or the majesty of a hawk hunting for prey overhead. On my trip to Guizhou I had the opportunity to kayak on Wanfeng lake. At one point I rested, floating at the center of the lake, listening to the spaces between silence and taking in the surrounding karst mountains. I thought about my childhood, and wished I had listened more closely to my father’s fishing musings.
During my trip around the city of Xingyi, in Guizhou, I saw the artwork of the Bouyei ethnic group. They use dyes produced from local plants to make clothing of striking blues and greens, and blankets. Local elders still practice weaving with wooden machines and pass that tradition on to their grandchildren. The history here is palpable, one could reach out and touch it, breathe it, even. My mother loved to decorate our home with paintings, jewelry and pottery. The designs were ancient, and carried tangible wisdom within them. This Earth is our home, and we celebrate its wonders. I caught that same feeling while gazing upon the art on display in Xingyi.
24. What did the author think about the most beautiful landscapes initially
A. They were highly similar. B. They were hard to access.
C. They were located in Arizona. D. They were situated in Guizhou.
25. What does the author learn from his experience in Xingyi
A. The preservation of cultural traditions. B. The appreciation of the Earth wonders.
C. The similarity between Arizona and Guizhou. D. The secret of the Bouyei ethnic group’s artwork.
26. Which one can describe the author’s feeling about Guizhou tour
A. Regretful but excited. B. Lonely and homesick.
C. Familiar but upset. D. Surprised and content.
27. What can be a suitable title for the passage
A. The Deepest Affection for My Parents
B. A Discovery of Chinese Ethnic Culture
C. A Tour Bringing Me Back to My Childhood
D. My Harvest Away from My Hometown Arizona
C
“When I left La Vega to go to art school as a young girl, I was wearing pants and a top that my mother made me using the fabric from a used bed cover. All I had was my luggage and a little piece of brown paper with the address of where I was going. And I never was going to return until I had a lot of good news to share. So now I am going back to La Vega as a MacArthur Genius,” said Campos-Pons, who grew up on a sugar plantation in Cuba, reacting to the news that she is one of this year’s 20 MacArthur Fellows.
The MacArthur Foundation gave $800,000 to her as an investment in their potential and Campos-Pons, 64, received this honor for her work as an artist whose sculptures, paintings, photography and more are displayed in over 30 museums around the globe.
Much of Campos-Pons’ art draws inspiration from her upbringing in La Vega, where her family lived in former slave quarter and taught her the traditions, customs and beliefs of her ancestors. Nigerian slaves were brought to Cuba to work in the sugar plantation.
“We keep dreaming and producing and we bring in an incredible amount of surprise to the human experience to overcome the complexity of life. And this is not only restricted to the American South; this is something you can find in places where people maintain tradition, perseverance and possibility.
My father, a herbalist, had an incredible amount of respect for nature. He would not take a little branch of a tree without knocking on it first and offering a gift because people do not take energy from a tree without asking permission. It inspired me in a piece in 1994, titled The Herbalist’s Tools. When I was 13, I did my first sculpture from the Greco-Roman empire at school in Matanzas. When I came home, I showed it to my father, and he put me on his horse and we went from house to house to show it to the neighbors. Here I was with something of no importance, but he already knew I was on my way to becoming an artist and wanted me to have an audience.
28. Which of the following can best describe Campos-Pons
A. Straightforward and gifted. B. Industrious and selfless.
C. Energetic and tolerant. D. Ambitious and determined.
29. What gives Campos-Pons ideas for her works
A. Her childhood life. B. The sugar plantation.
C. Her religious belief. D. The slaves in Cuba.
30. What can we infer about the American Southerners
A. They are optimistic about hardships in life.
B. They strictly follow customs and traditions.
C. They share with people the complexity of life.
D. They are surprised about the complexity of life.
31. Why does Campos-Pons mention her father
A. To show his great personalities. B. To introduce his impact on her.
C. To recall his respect for nature. D. To display his artistic sensibility.
D
“He is a giant of the 20th-century art, but that doesn’t mean he only did big paintings, said Lynn Miller, director of Rochester Central Gallery, in an interview last Thursday.
Entitled “Picasso and His Drafts”, a special exhibit marking 50 years since the death of Pablo Picasso is held at the gallery this month. Instead of his paintings, the notebooks on which the Spanish legendary artist drew drafts are shown to the public for the first time.
Matchbox covers, postcards, restaurant napkins all served as drafting notes for the artist at moments of inspiration. It is important to know that each of the 14 notebooks presented reflects what was going on in his life.
For example, a tiny notebook whose size is just 3 by 5 inches stands out among the exhibits. Inside the little book was a self-portrait of the artist finished roughly in pencil, with deep and thoughtful eyes. It was done in 1918 and Picasso, then in his mid-30s, had just got married. He produced big-sized artworks but he also kept this tiny notebook around, filling it with scenes of his wife, their friends, the beach and the town, and drafts of upcoming paintings. Actually, many of the draft drawings are early versions of famed paintings like Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907) and Dora Maar in an Armchair (1939).
“He is a great artist of the modern period, and we see practice and determination in his notebooks,” said Lynn Miller, referring to Picasso’s efforts in improving his skills through copious drawing. Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, a grandson of Picasso’s, remembered him always drafting until the last piece of paper available. “My grandpa was permanently drawing something,” Ruiz-Picasso said.
In a documentary film shown at the gallery, Picasso, shirtless and in shorts, was standing on a ladder to reach the top of his canvas (画布). It reminds visitors of the real size of his masterworks.
32. What are the key features of the recent exhibit at the gallery
A. Notebooks for sale. B. Picasso’s artworks.
C. Priceless artistic drafts. D. Masterpieces of the 20th century.
33. What is reflected in the notebooks of Picasso
A. His life experience. B. The love for his country.
C. The content of his books. D. His education background.
34. Which of the following best describes Picasso according to his grandson
A. Creative. B. Diligent. C. Optimistic. D. Humorous.
35. What can we learn from the author’s words in the last paragraph
A. Picasso used to mind his appearance. B. The gallery exhibits real masterworks.
C. The documentary movie is worth seeing. D. Picasso’s artworks are actually of great size.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Learn a new language and, at some point, you’ll meet native speakers that have you questioning your language abilities. __36__ And what’s that slang (俚语) they’re using ! If this sounds all too familiar to you, then welcome! You’ve leveled up to a new stage of language learning best known as the dialect. The differences between a dialect and a language have a number of technicalities and exceptions tied to them. But as a language learner, you’re probably more interested in the practical takeaway.
__37__. We can see how the standard elements of English change across the US, the UK, and even Singapore, where Singlish exists as a hyper-regional dialect of English.
The first thing you’ll notice about each English dialect is the shift in pronunciation. This shift, better known as an accent, is an important element of a dialect. __38__. Don’t worry too much about this. What’s important is that you’re able to identify differences during conversations and feel comfortable adapting to them.
Studies show that children who primarily speak a dialect are hyper-aware of the differences, and are able to reach reading and writing goals more quickly as a result. __39__ Learning a dialect, rather than just the standard language, requires a deeper dig into cultural nuances (细微差异) that aren’t lost on native speakers. In short: Learning a dialect shows that you care! It’s an incredible way to connect with new cultural communities in the process.
Before you learn a dialect, you should have a firm grasp of the fundamentals of a “standard” language. That way, you’ll be able to gain meaning through context. __40__ Movies, music, books, and news are all fantastic ways to pick up on those dialectical nuances.
A. Then, enlarge your exposure.
B. There’re many varieties of English.
C. How does their accent sound so different
D. But accent isn’t always necessary to a dialect.
E. Dialects also allow you to build deeper connections.
F. Some people are good at shifting between different accents.
G. Dialects are often closely tied with geographical boundaries.

Six hundred anxious parents and relatives sat in the school hall waiting for the talent show to begin. Jane sat alone in the crowd. It seemed everything she did lately, she did alone. Over the past several years the unexpected downward spirals (逐渐下滑) had destroyed her marriage and seriously threatened her financial situation, leaving her exhausted and hopeless. She worried how she was going to provide a future for herself and her eight-year-old daughter, Renee.
Renee had one passion—to learn Irish dance. For several years, with a borrowed CD, she had taught herself a few steps and had even danced in front of both her first and second grade classes. This year, despite their situation, Jane had somehow managed to squeeze enough from her budget to pay for Renee’s dancing lessons. For four months Renee had practiced, determined to perform in this talent show.
Renee could not have been more excited or looked more beautiful than she did tonight in her borrowed Irish costume and shoes. Full of confidence, she was ready to dance! As the program moved through each performance, Jane was anxious and wondered how her little third grade daughter would respond to such a large audience. In her short eight years, Renee had never faced such a challenge.
Finally, it was Renee’s turn. Jane held her breath as the curtain rose and the spotlight pierced (穿透) through the darkness and onto her daughter looking so small and alone on the stage. The audience greeted her with polite applause and the music began.
Renee fell quickly into step with the cheerful Irish tune. Her joy was evident as she danced and spun (旋转) in circles around the stage. A few in the crowd began to clap with the music. More joined in until the entire audience, caught up in the beat, was clapping along with Renee as she danced lightly.
But wait! Jane wanted to shout. What happened

It’s quite incredible how a simple hobby can turn into a fulfilling and successful career. I want to share my journey with you, starting from my love for photography. I used to take pictures of landscapes and people during my free time. It was my way of capturing life’s beautiful moments and expressing my creativity. Little did I expect that this passion would lead to a career. Over time, I improved my skills by experimenting with various techniques and attending photography workshops. Friends and family began to notice my talent and asked me to photograph their events. This was the turning point. I started doing small jobs like capturing (拍摄) weddings, parties, and special moments. Word of mouth quickly spread, and soon, I was in demand as a photographer. As my client base expanded, so did my confidence and ambition. I realized I could turn my hobby into a full-time career. However, this journey had its challenges. The pressure of delivering perfect photos, the irregular income, and the competition in the photography world tested my patience. Now, I’ve established my own photography business, specializing in portrait (肖像) photography. I’ve traveled to beautiful places, met wonderful people, and captured countless unforgettable moments. My future plans include exploring new types of photography, teaching ambitious photographers, and continuing to find new ways to tell domestic stories through my camera.

Here I was with something of no importance, but he already knew I was on my way to becoming an artist and wanted me to have an audience.(我的父亲是一名草药医生,他对大自然有着难以置信的尊重。

Dear Jim,
It’s great to hear from you. I feel proud to know that you are interested in Chinese history.
As for my favorite figure in Chinese history, it must be Wei Yuan, a great thinker in the late Qing Dynasty. He, in his book, Haiguo Tuzhi(Maps and Records of the World), introduced modern technologies and ideas to China. That opened our eyes to the world. In fact, he inspires me to major in English in college, to be a bridge between China and the world.
Interested in knowing more I can find you some books. Just let me know.
Yours,
Li Hua

The music shouldn’t have stopped! The dance wasn’t over. Something had gone wrong but there was nothing Jane could do. Her daughter stood completely alone on that stage, her dance unfinished, with no one to give her direction, a hopeless and confusing situation that Jane couldn’t be more familiar with. However, just as she wondered how her little girl would react, Renee glanced off stage and made a decision in one quick instant: she took her position and began to dance again, with a look of grim determination and with no music at all! The audience, now somewhat confused, grew quiet and watched.
In the silence of that hall, Renee danced on and on. Realizing what happened to this little third grade girl, more and more of the audience started their rhythmic clap again. As she eventually finished every step and bowed deeply, the audience stood and roared their approval with deafening applause, whistles, and loud shouts of “Bravo! Bravo!” Staring at her daughter with a radiant and proud smile, Jane realized something at that moment—something her own daughter had just shown her. Though her own music had stopped, she must keep on dancing. She could keep on dancing! After all, if her daughter could do it, she could, too.
