本单元为2019年新人教版高中英语必修第二册第三单元,单元主题是人与社会,围绕有关互联网的话题展开。本阅读语篇讲述讲述一位年过五旬的失业教师不仅使用互联网改变了生活,而且帮助其他老年人学会使用互联网,从而改变他们的生活和命运的美好故事。
文章共有五个自然段,交代了故事发生的时代背景、地点、人物,以及事件发生的原因、经过和结果。语篇结构完整,主题温馨积极,充满正能量。第一段是引子,点明了文章的话题范围,即互联网改变了人们的生活,强调互联网的影响。第二段叙述了Jan Tchamani “触网”的原因和经历。第三段讲述Jan 开办IT俱乐部,帮助老年人使用电脑和网络并取得可喜成效的故事。第四段介绍Jan消除数字鸿沟的理念和下一步的行动目标。最后一段以主人公的一番话结尾,体现了主人公推己及人、悲悯天下的高尚情操。她不仅提升了自己,也帮助了他人。

教学目标
After this class, the students are supposed to be able to:
1. get the main idea and the structure of the passage through jigsaw reading.
2. get detailed information, summarize Jan’s story and tell Jan’s characters through reading activities and brainstorming.
3. talk about their own online activities and tell how we can use the internet to make ourselves and
society better.

Step 1 Lead-in 1. T shows photos of Ss having online classes and asks them when and where the photos were taken. (at home during the outbreak of COVID-19) 2. T shows more pictures about the news report related to COVID-19 and asks Ss how they kept in touch with relatives and friends and learnt about the news during the epidemic. (cellphone, TV, computer… the Internet) 利用图片,结合学生自己的经历,引出主题。激活背景知识,形成阅读期待。

Step 2 Reading Activity 1 Jigsaw reading 1. T gives each S five pieces of paper with each having a short paragraph on it. Ss read them quickly, figure out the main idea or topic sentence of each one and then put the 5 paragraphs into the right order to get the complete article. 2. Ss check their answers with each other first and then take out the reading material to do a final check. 3. Ss tell the topic sentence or main idea of each paragraph, based on which, Ss figure out the structure of the reading passage. 通过拼图式阅读,概括文章信息,了解文章结构。 语言能力: 获取、概括信息。 思维品质: 提取整合信息,训练逻辑思维能力。
Activity 2 Reading for detailed information. Read and finish a flow chart of the story 1. T asks Ss to read the passage again with the following questions in mind. (1)Why did Jan quit her job (2) How did the people in the online community help her (3) What is the “digital divide” (4) What’s Jan’s next goal 2. Based on their reading and the questions, Ss finish the flow chart on the handout sheet. 3. Ss share their answers. Besides, they also need to further explain three important and difficult points. (1) What did Jan do on online (2) How was she helped by the online group (3) What is the “digital divide” 附:flowchart设计 任务驱动,细读文章,获取细节信息,并根据读取的信息完成表格,梳理归纳故事脉络,感受互联网对作者人生的影响。 语言能力: 获取信息; 描述阐释意义 学习能力: 自主学习

Step 3 Activity 4 Thinking and sharing 1. Compared with Jan’s online activities, Ss reflect on their own online activities and share them with your group. T guides Ss to think using the following questions: What do you usually do online What do you think of your online activities Why How can we use internet to make ourselves and society better … 2. Ss share their stories and opinions with the whole class. 深化主题意义,加强德育浸润,让学生反思互联网和自己的关系,思考如何利用互联网提升自我,服务社会。 思维品质: 辩证看待互联网,思考互联网与自我、社会的关系,培养批判性思维。 文化意识: 联系生活,表达自己观点。

Step 4 Summary & Assignment 1. T guided Ss to summarize what they have learnt and to understand the important of learning to use the Internet wisely for a better self and a better world. 2. Assignments: Option 1: Summarize Jan’s story in 100 words. Option 2: Write your own Internet story in 100 words. Option 3: Search the Internet for more stories about how the Internet has changed people’s life and choose one to share with the class in the next period. Here are some websites for your reference
