Since the last ice age, humans have cleared nearly half of the earth's forests and grasslands for agriculture. With the world population expanding, there's ever-increasing pressure on farmland to produce not only more food but also clean energy. In places such as Yakima County, Washington, it's created competition for space as land-hungry solar panels (板) consume available fields. Last month, the state approved plans to cover 1,700 acres of agricultural land with solar panels, fueling concerns over the long-term impacts of losing cropland.
A recent study from the University of California, however, shows how farmers may soon harvest crops and energy together. One researcher, Majdi Abou Najm, explains that visible light spectrum (光谱) can be separated into blue and red light waves, and their photons (光子) have different properties. Blue ones have higher energy than red ones. While that gives blue light what is needed to generate power, it also results in higher temperatures. "From a plant angle, red photons are the efficient ones," says Abou Najm. "They don't make the plant feel hot."
A goal of the study is to create a new generation of solar panels. He sees potential in the organic solar cells, which come from carbon-based materials. Thin and transparent, the cells are applied like a film onto various surfaces. This new technology could be used to develop special solar panels that block blue light to generate power, while passing the red light on to crops planted directly below. These panels could also provide shade for heat-sensitive fruits during the hottest part of the day.
By 2050, we'll have two billion more people, and we'll need more food and more energy. "By maximizing the solar spectrum, "we're making full use of an endlessly sustainable resource," says Abo u Najm. "If a technology that can develop these panels kicks in, then the sky is the limit on how efficient we can be."
24.What problem does the first paragraph focus on
A.Losing cropland to solar panels. B.Distribution of the world population.
C.Reduction in forests and grasslands. D.Competing for land between farmers.
25.What does the underlined word "that" in Paragraph 2 refer to
A.Generation of solar power. B.Hot weather increasing efficiency.
C.Blue photons having higher energy. D.Separation of visible light spectrum.
26.What do we know about the organic solar cells
A.They make fruits heat-sensitive. B.They can cool down in hot days,
C.They allow red light to pass through. D.They can store carbon-based materials.
27.What does Abo u Najm think of the future of the new solar panels
A.Limited. B.Promising. C.Uncertain. D.Challenging.

South Baltimore is often thought of as a place to avoid—folks are taught to be careful of it. There was a mass shooting this past July, and another in early September.
"People think Curtis Bay is a dangerous place. It's not. It's just that we're surrounded by dangerous things," says Taysia Thompson, 17.
Taysia is a member of Free Your Voice, a group of student activists fighting against a very different kind of danger in their neighborhood: air pollution and climate change. Now, the focus of their movement is the mountains of coal. Coal releases a fine, black dust, small enough to get into people's lungs. It makes respiratory (呼吸的) diseases worse, or can even cause disease and premature (过早的) death. And there are greenhouse gas emissions after the coal is burned.
The teens of Free Your Voice are taking on a big opponent: the massive goods transportation company CSX, which transported more than 8 million tons of coal through South Baltimore in 2021. The goal is to eventually get the state regulators to deny the permit that CSX needs to operate, or at least require the company to enclose all the coal, or at the very least put water onto all of it so there's less dust blowing around.
This past summer, Taysia and three other students spent their time gathering evidence to try and get the coal pollution out of their neighborhood. They used sticky paper to gather samples of dust from all over the neighborhood to prove that the dust is from coal. They are also sending dust samples to a scientist in California, who uses an electron microscope to compare the dust that's in this neighborhood to samples from the piles of coal at the terminal in South Baltimore to see if it matches.
The students now have support from their community. But the responses from officials have not been very satisfying. "Everyone is just breathing the air. And we will keep fighting," says Taysia.
28.Why do the teens of Free Your Voice take CSX as an opponent
A.Because they want to cure lung diseases. B.Because they want to tackle air pollution.
C.Because they want to resist mass shootings. D.Because they want to cut premature death rate.
29.What do the teens of Free Your Voice hope to achieve
A.Scientists will examine the dust samples.
B.Officials will refuse CSX the operation permit.
C.State regulators will keep fighting against pollution.
D.Locals in Curtis Bay will clear the mountain s of coal away.
30.What can be inferred about the teens' fight
A.It isn't all plain sailing. B.It will definitely end in victory.
C.The teens lack solid evidence. D.The teens work on it all by themselves.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Tourists Avoiding Dangerous South Baltimore
B.Teens Gaining Support in Environmental Protection
C.Student Activists Pushing Back Against Big Polluter
D.17-year-old Girl Fighting Against Mass Shootings in Community

A satellite is an object in space that orbits around another. It has two kinds—natural satellites and artificial satellites. The moon is a natural satellite that moves around the earth while artificial satellites are those made by man.
Despite their widespread impact on daily life, artificial satellites mainly depend on different complicated makeup. On the outside, they may look like a wheel, equipped with solar panels or sails. Inside, the satellites contain mission-specific scientific instruments, which include whatever tools the satellites need to perform their work. Among them, high-resolution cameras and communication electronics are typical ones. Besides, the part that carries the load and holds all the parts together is called the bus.
Artificial satellites operate in a systematic way just like puters function as the satellite's brain, which receive information, interpret it, and send messages back to the earth. Advanced digital cameras serve as the satellite's eyes. Sensors are other important parts that not only recognize light, heat, and gases, but also record changes in what is being observed. Radio s on the satellite send information back to the earth. Solar panels provide electrical power for the computers and other equipment, as well as the power to move the satellite forward.
Artificial satellites use gravity to stay in their orbits. Earth's gravity pulls everything toward the center of the planet. To stay in the earth's orbit, the speed of a satellite must adjust to the tiniest changes in the pull of gravity. The satellite's speed works against earth's gravity just enough so that it doesn't go speeding into space or fall back to the earth.
Rockets carry satellites to different types and heights of orbits, based on the tasks they need to perform. Satellites closer to the earth are in low earth orbit, which can be 200-500 miles high. The closer to the earth, the stronger the gravity is. Therefore, these satellites must travel at about 17,000 miles per hour to keep from falling back to the earth, while higher-orbiting satellites can travel more slowly.
32.What is Paragraph 2 of the text mainly about
A.The appearance of artificial satellites. B.The components of artificial satellites.
C.The basic function of artificial satellites. D.The specific mission of artificial satellites.
33.What is the role of computers in artificial satellites
A.Providing electrical power. B.Recording changes observed.
C.Monitoring space environment. D.Processing information received.
34.How do artificial satellites stay in their orbits
A.By relying on powerful rockets to get out of gravity.
B.By orbiting at a fixed speed regardless of gravity's pull.
C.By changing speed constantly based on the pull of gravity.
D.By resisting the pull of gravity with advanced technologies.
35.Why do satellites in higher orbit travel more slowly
A.They are more affected by earth's gravity. B.They take advantage of rockets more effectively.
C.They have weaker pull of gravity in higher orbits. D.They are equipped with more advanced instruments.

"Not again!" Aliya shouted angrily, looking at the marks she had attained in her maths test.
It seemed as if failing in the math test had become part and parcel of her life. Despite her efforts, she had been unable to perform well. Tears in her eyes, she quickly shoved (乱塞) the paper into her bag before any classmate could make a rude comment on her.
Effortlessly, using the back of her palm, she was wiping the tears when her teacher Mrs Leena noticed her. She came to Aliya's desk and, in a soft voice, asked Aliya to see her during the break time.
Wondering what it could be, Aliya waited impatiently for lunchtime. Finally, when the bell rang, she made her way to Mrs Leena. As soon as Mrs Leena saw Aliya, she gestured for her to sit on the empty chair beside her.
Mrs Leena carefully studied her face, cleared her throat with a bright smile and said, "You seem to be anxious. You can tell me what's bothering you and we may come up with a good solution together."
With a sad look, Aliya said, "Well ma'am, you know I have been struggling in maths since the beginning of the term. It seems as if no matter how hard I work, I am unable to get the desired result. I feel so upset."
"You need not be so gloomy," encouraged Mrs Leena. "With these three key ingredients: hard work, determination and resilience (韧性), you will move ahead and succeed. It's always the first step that's difficult, but once you decide not to look back and not give up, you will be successful, my e on, gather yourself and let's work on it together."
From that day onwards, Aliya worked hard, religiously following her teacher's advice. By the time the final exams drew close, she had thoroughly revised her math book and well prepared.

Text 10
W: Good evening, everyone. I recently learnt Arabic in Cairo as part of my degree. My interest in the language was due to the passion of our Arabic lecturer and as the course progressed, my interest in the culture also grew with it. I considered studying in the Middle East, but ultimately decided on Cairo due to its energetic cultural scene. However, in the city, we faced some challenges, including difficulties finding a hotel and accommodation as we were a group of unmarried individuals. Once settled, the culture shock was intense for some of us. One member of our group returned home within the first week. Luckily I became accustomed to the life in Cairo gradually. The biggest challenge of learning Arabic is the disconnection between the written and the spoken forms. Despite these challenges, learning Arabic has been a rewarding experience, including absorbing myself in the culture and getting to know the locals and even negotiating at a local market. Highlights were being invited to a traditional Arabic meal at one of the locals' home and being able to confidently communicate. Overall, this experience was outside of my comfort zone and allowed me to learn and grow in interesting ways. I encourage others to consider involving themselves in new cultures and languages. Thanks for listening.

27.B 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“'By maximizing the solar spectrum, we're making full use of an endlessly sustainable resource,' says Abou. Najm, 'If a technology that can develop these panels kicks in, then the sky is the limit on how efficient we can be.'”可知,Abou Najm认为有机太阳能电池板能够最大限度地利用无尽的太阳能资源,让人类的效率变得无限,由此可推测出,他认为有机太阳能电池板非常有前景。
28.B 推理判断题。根据第三段“Taysia is a member of Free Your Voice, a group of student activists fighting against... And there are greenhouse gas emissions after the coal is burned.”以及第四段中“The teens of Free Your Voice are talking on a big opponent: the massive goods transportation company CSX, which transported more than 8 million tons of coal through South Baltimore in 2021.”可知,Free Your Voice的青少年将CSX视为对手是为了解决空气污染问题。
29.B 细节理解题。根据第四段“The goal is to eventually get the state regulators to deny the permit that… put water onto all of it so there's less dust blowing around.”可知,Free Your Voice的青少年希望实现的目标是让官方拒绝发放CSX的运营许可。

34.C 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Artificial satellites use gravity to stay in their orbits. Earth's gravity pulls everything toward the center of the planet. To stay in the earth's orbit, the speed of a satellite must adjust to the tiniest changes in the pull of gravity.”可知,人造卫星在重力的作用下不断改变速度以保持在轨道上。
35.C 细节理解题。根据最后一段“The closer to the earth, the stronger the gravity is. Therefore, these satellites must travel at about 17,000 miles per hour to keep from falling back to the earth, while higher-orbiting satellites can travel more slowly.”可知,高地球轨道上的卫星运行速度较慢是因为它们在高地球轨道上受到的引力较弱。
36.G 空前内容“The term 'superfood' may have taken the modern food scene by storm.”提出“超级食物”这一概念。选项G“However, its roots can be traced back to early 20th-century nutrition literature.”指出其根源可以追溯到20世纪早期的营养文献,与上文“the modern food”之间存在转折关系。同时引出下文“Although only popular in recent years, the concept of certain foods with special nutritional qualities has been around for a long time.”

On the exam day, a fear of failure upset her stomach. Aliya's heart raced as she sat down in front of the desk. She took a deep breath, trying to recall the encouragement from Mrs Leena. As she began the test, the questions seemed to be difficult at first, but she pushed through, step by step, using the strategies she had learned. With each question she completed, her confidence grew. By the end of the exam, Aliya felt a sense of accomplishment, not because she was sure she had aced it, but because she had faced her fears and given it her all.
She passed her math exam with an unbelievable A grade on her report card. The moment she saw the grade, tears of joy welled up in her eyes. It wasn't just a grade. It was a test ament to her hard work, her teacher's unwavering support, and the resilience she had found within herself. Aliya left the room with her head held high, no longer the student who dreaded math, but a young woman who had conquered her fears and believed in her abilities.
