Having long been regarded as the grandest traditional festival in China, the Spring Festival falls on the first day of the Chinese lunar year, tracing back to 2,000 years ago.
Traditionally, before the festival, people not only make purchases for it but also give their houses a thorough clean, preparing for the coming celebration. By tradition, red lanterns, paper cuts as well as couplets in red which are associated with good fortune and prosperity are used to decorate their houses. Apart from those, some plants symbolizing abundance, well-being, and a renewal of life also make good decorations. Usually, it is on the Spring Festival's Eve that all the family members will get together feasting on tasty dumplings and other delicacies while enjoying the Spring Festival Gala on TV. Typically, it is a custom for people to stay up late and set off fireworks to welcome the arrival of the new year.
In a nut shell, as a celebration marking the promise of spring and a renewal of life, the Spring Festival is also an occasion when people relax and enjoy a pleasant time together.
