I used to think that life in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, was filled with never-changing routines. I hated that everyone seemed to know everything about everyone else. Everyone seemed to enjoy talking about other people and their lives. I also didn’t like the fact that people seemed very close-minded. I felt trapped. I felt like I was missing out on opportunities. It seemed to me that city life would be the opposite.
Then I took my first trip to New York City. I couldn’t wait to experience the city. However, when I arrived in the Big Apple, it wasn’t at all what I had imagined. I knew it was home to thousands of people, but I hadn’t had the least expectation to see so many people on the street at one time. All the streets were filled with people. I also felt a little surprised to see that everyone was in a hurry and everything moved at such a fast pace. When I took the subway for the first time, I said hello to the middle-aged woman next to me. She looked at me with dislike and didn’t say a word.
After just one day, I realized how important my small town is to me. Now I appreciate the familiar faces I see every day. I like the feeling of security and belonging my town offers. Jim Thorpe gives me a sense of community and togetherness that the city doesn’t provide. I realize just how much a simple hello does for a stranger — it really can make your day a little better.
My big trip showed me that my small town really has instilled(注入) morals and values in me that I didn’t even know I had. I would never have known what a big place my town holds in my heart if I had not taken that trip to New York City.
4. How did the author feel about life in Jim Thorpe at first
A. People there cared little about others.
B. People there liked to accept new things.
C. Living there was a great disadvantage.
D. There were many chances of career development.
5. What surprised the author most in New York City
A. The gestures of greeting. B. The modern transportation.
C. The fast pace of life. D. The crowded streets.
6. What made the author change his / her attitudes to his /her hometown
A. Travelling to New York City.
B. The familiar faces in Jim Thorpe.
C. A big place in his / her town.
D. Everybody likes talking about others.
7. What would be the best title for the passage
A. Love of my small town.
B. A sense of community.
C. A pleasant trip to New York City.
D. Differences between big cities and small towns.
C
Fewer than five percent of the students who applied to Stanford University in California were accepted this year. About six percent of the applicants to Yale University in Connecticut were admitted. But if you did not get into a school like Stanford,Yale or Harvard University,do not despair. Students shouldn't panic if they don't get a spot. It is still possible to be successful. Students who apply to universities like Stanford and Harvard—but do not get in—are likely to do well anywhere.
The researchers say that self belief may predict success better than other factors. Those other factors include good grades, high SAT scores and activities out of school. The researchers say people who apply to these selective schools do well even if they are not accepted into famous schools.
A study by the Brookings Institution might be more valuable than other lists:It ranks schools based on how much value they provide for their students.
The idea about ambition and confidence does not always apply to minority(少数民族) students. Minority students should reach for these famous schools. That is because they can make social connections that may be useful for advancing their careers in the future.
The most popular courses are no longer literature and philosophy. The most popular are business and health care. Students who need help in getting to class and completing a degree are a greater concern. Most of the stories about higher education in the US skip the most important matter: People can't afford to spend enough time in college to actually finish their boring degrees.
But if they do,the degree remains the most likely path to a decent?paying job. That is why students can be successful even if they do not get into a school like Harvard.
8.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Only a Few Lucky Students Can Enter Harvard
B.If You Prefer Money,Never Choose Harvard
C.If You Don't Get into Harvard,Don't Worry
D.You Can Succeed Without High Education
9.What's the most important factor in a successful career according to the researchers
A.Good chance. B.Confidence.
C.Hard work. D.Education.
10.What does the text advise minority students to do
A.Try to study in well known schools.
B.Get ambition and confidence.
C.Ignore the famous schools.
D.Choose ordinary schools to earn more money.
11.What might happen if you spend enough time completing the degree
A.You can't earn much money.
B.You can be less competitive.
C.You may find a wellpaid job.
D.You may not find a dream job.
D
Although vaccines are required for entry into school in most places in the United States, the government does allow for exceptions, like religious reasons.
In the last few years, the rates of vaccinepreventable illness have been on the rise. In most cases, these outbreaks began with children who were unvaccinated. To deal with this threat, some schools in New York have been refusing to allow unvaccinated children to attend school. Several parents thought this was unfair and filed lawsuits(起诉). Just recently, though, a court(法庭) ruled in favor of the city schools.
The court made the right decision. Vaccine policy depends not only on the added protection that vaccines provide for those who get shots, but also on the decreased likelihood that anyone will come into contact(接触) with the disease. This is known as community immunity. It refers to the fact that when enough people are immunized, then there really can’t be an outbreak. And if there can’t be an outbreak, then everyone is protected.
This is important, because there are people who cannot be given immunizations for various reasons. For example, small babies can’t be given all vaccines. In 1995, the chicken pox(水痘) vaccine was introduced in the United States. Over time, more and more children received it. In 2011, a study looked at how the program affected the number of children who died from the disease.
The first thing noted in the paper was that death from chicken pox went down considerably after the vaccine was introduced. From 2001 through 2007, the rates of death remained much lower, with just a few children dying from chicken pox nationally each year.
What’s more from 2004 through 2007, not one child less than 1 year of age died in the United States from chicken pox. This is important, because we cannot give the chicken pox vaccine to babies. In other words, all those babies were saved not because we vaccinated them against this illness, but because older children were.
Therefore, people who refuse to vaccinate their children aren’t just putting themselves at risk—they’re putting everyone else in danger, too.
12.Whose interest did the judges take into consideration
A.Students’ B.School leaders’
C.Several parents’ D.Unvaccinated kids’
13. What is needed to prevent disease outbreaks through “community immunity”?
A.Requiring everyone to be immune. B.Vaccinating babies as early as possible.
C.Making sure enough people get vaccinated. D.Separating unvaccinated people from vaccinated.
14.What does the study about the chicken pox vaccine show
A.The vaccine is safe for every kid. B.No deaths have been seen since 2004.
C.The vaccine has lowered the death rate. D.The vaccine is more effective among babies.
15.Which of the following would the author agree with
A.No vaccine, no risk. B.No vaccine, no school.
C.Vaccination is a personal choice. D.Vaccinepreventable illness is dropping.
