However, she never truly regarded it as a possible career path. Astonishingly, her parents, contrary to her expectations, wholeheartedly encouraged her to apply toart schools. Eventually, she was accepted into the Rhode Island School of Design tostudy industrial design. The academic journey was far from easy, filled withdemanding tasks such as metalworking, woodworking, and model making. Therewas even a phase when she spent an entire month just drawing cubes, which madeher question her choice. But she soldiered on and soon began working on morecaptivating projects.Currently, Mosquera serves as a design strategist for a prominent architectureand interior design company in Washington, D.C. In addition to her professionalcommitments, she harbors a long-standing and profound interest in public art. Thisyear, she played a crucial role in creating and designing “The Walkway” for the D.C.government. This unique structure, an 11-meter-long tunnel-like creation, narrowssharply as one walks through. Bright lights change colors along the path. On the wallsare images of people. Voices and city sounds are played through speakers installed inthe walkway. At first, the recorded conversations and street noise and pictures have apositive feel. But the images and audio increase in intensity along the path. Theexperience becomes dark and violent in the middle part of the walkway. “The purposeof showing these two different human emotions and human reactions is to allowpeople to reflect upon a variety of different expressions, so that brings up theconversation as to what is the right way to talk to each other in a public space.Should we talk to each other at all? So people are really questioning that. And that'swhat public art is meant to do,” said Mosquera. For Mosquera, the physical experience of this structure has a far greater impactthan merely viewing it on paper. In her free time, she delights in developing publicart, firmly believing that the best way to learn is through hands-on work and takingon as many projects as possible.Industrial design, in her view, makes her a jack ofall trades.【语篇导读】本文是一篇人物传记类文章,主要介绍了巴西人Zarela Mosquera的艺术学习和职业生涯。24.Which one is the task Zarela Mosquera had to do during her industrial designcourse?( )A.Writing essays. B.Doing carpentry work.C.Performing on stage. D.Giving presentations.【解析】文中第一段提到“The academic journey was far from easy, filled withdemanding tasks such as metalworking, woodworking, and model making.” woodworking(木工)即 carpentry(木工活),所以答案是 B。√25.What do we know about “The Walkway”?( )A.There are sounds coming from passers-by.B.The images on the walls are famous figures.C.It is intended to make people think about public communication.D.The whole structure creates an atmosphere of darkness and violence.√【解析】文中第二段提到“The purpose of showing these two different human emotionsand human reactions is to allow people to reflect upon a variety of differentexpressions, so that brings up the conversation as to what is the right way to talk toeach other in a public space.”,可以推断出“The Walkway”是为了让人们思考公共交流。A选项声音来自路人错误,文中提到“Voices and city sounds are played throughspeakers installed in the walkway.”,声音来自安装的扬声器。B选项墙上都是著名人物的图像与文中“On the walls are images of people.”不符,文中未表明是著名人物;D选项,文中明确指出“The experience becomes dark and violent in the middle part of thewalkway.”,这表明只是通道的中间部分有黑暗和暴力的感觉,而非整个结构都营造出这样的氛围。26.What does the underlined sentence “Industrial design, in her view, makes her ajack of all trades.” in the last paragraph imply?( )A.Industrial design allows her to have a wide range of skills.B.Industrial design develops her interest in public art.C.Industrial design makes her a master of trading with others.D.Industrial design gives her an opportunity to take on hands-on work.√【解析】“jack of all trades”意为“多面手”。文章最后一段也提到“firmly believing thatthe best way to learn is through hands-on work and taking on as many projects aspossible”学习最好的方式是通过实操并且尽可能多地承担很多的项目。 27.What can be used to describe Zarela Mosquera?( )A.Responsible and cautious. B.Determined and creative.C.Passionate and considerate. D.Ambitious and proud.【解析】从Zarela Mosquera在面对工业设计课程的困难时坚持下来(But she soldieredon)以及积极参与公共艺术创作可看出她的坚定和创造力。 √CRecently, campaigners have encouraged us to buy local food. This reduces “foodmiles”, that is, the distance food travels to get from the producer to the retailer. They reason that the higher the food miles, the more carbon emissions. Buying localfood, therefore, has a lower carbon footprint and is more environmentally friendly. However, the real story is not as simple as that. If our aim is to reduce carbonemissions, we must look at the whole farming process, not just transportation.Other processes, including fertilization, storage, heating and irrigation, contributemuch more.In fact, imported food often has a lower carbon footprint than locally grownfood. Take apples for example. In autumn, when apples are harvested, the bestoption for a British resident is to buy British apples. However, the apples we buy inwinter or spring have been kept refrigerated for months, and this uses up a lot ofenergy. In spring, therefore, it is more energy-efficient to import them from NewZealand, where they are in season. Heating also uses a lot of energy, which iswhy growing tomatoes in heated greenhouses in the UK is less environmentallyfriendly than importing them from Spain, where the crop grows well in the localclimate. We must also take into account the type of transport. Transporting food by aircreates about 50 times more emissions than shipping it. However, only a smallproportion of goods are flown to the consumer country, and these are usually highvalue, perishable items which we cannot produce locally. Even then, these foodsmay not have a higher carbon footprint than locally grown food. For example, beans flown in from Kenya are grown in sunny fields using manual labour andnatural fertilizers, unlike in Britain, where we use oil-based fertilizers anddiesel machinery. Therefore, the total carbon footprint is still lower. It's also worth remembering that a product's journey does not end at thesupermarket. The distance consumers travel to buy their food, and the kind oftransport they use will also add to its carbon footprint. So driving a long way to shopfor food will negate any environmental benefits of buying locally grown produce.Recently, some supermarkets have been trying to raise awareness of food milestoo. But ultimately, the measures are too simple. Lots of different factors contributeto a food's carbon footprint besides the distance it has travelled.【语篇导读】本文是一篇议论文,讨论了购买本地食物是否真的更环保这一问题。28.Why is importing apples from New Zealand more energy-efficient for Britishresidents in spring?( )A.It reduces food miles.B.British apples are in short supply.C.New Zealand apples are cheaper.D.British apples have been stored under energy-consuming conditions.√【解析】从文章第三段中的“However, the apples we buy in winter or spring havebeen kept refrigerated for months, and this uses up a lot of energy. In spring, therefore, it is more energy-efficient to import them from New Zealand, where theyare in season.(然而,我们在冬季或春季购买的苹果已经冷藏了数月,这会消耗大量能源。因此,在春季,从新西兰进口苹果更节能,因为那里的苹果正当季。)”可以得出答案。 这两句话明确指出英国在春季时,苹果已被冷藏数月,处于耗能状态,所以从新西兰进口苹果更节能。29.Which of the following statements is correct according to the passage?( )A.All imported food has a higher carbon footprint than locally grown food.B.Beans flown in from Kenya have higher carbon footprints than grown in Britain.C.Transporting food by air always results in a higher carbon footprint than growinglocal food.D.Only considering food miles is an oversimplified way to assess a food'senvironmental impact.√【解析】从文章第二段中的“If our aim is to reduce carbon emissions, we must lookat the whole farming process, not just transportation.(如果我们的目标是减少碳排放,我们必须考虑整个农业生产过程,而不仅仅是运输。)”以及最后一段中的“Lots ofdifferent factors contribute to a food's carbon footprint besides the distance it hastravelled.(除了食物运输的距离之外,还有许多不同的因素会影响食物的碳足迹。)” 30.The underlined word “negate” in paragraph 5 probably means ___.A.enhance B.ignore C.cancel out D.misunderstand【解析】从文章第五段“It's also worth remembering that a product's journey does notend at the supermarket. The distance consumers travel to buy their food, and thekind of transport they use will also add to its carbon footprint. So driving a long wayto shop for food will negate any environmental benefits of buying locally grownproduce.(同样值得记住的是,产品的旅程并不在超市结束。消费者购买食物所走的距离以及他们使用的交通方式也会增加食物的碳足迹。所以,开车很远去购买食物会使得购买本地种植产品的任何环境效益都无效。)”可以得出答案。“negate”表示使无效,与“cancel out(抵消)”意思相近。A选项“enhance”是增强,与原文意思不符;B选项“ignore”是忽视,也不准确;D选项“misunderstand”是误解,不符合语境。√31.What is the author's attitude towards buying local food?( )A.Strongly supportive. B.Completely opposed.C.Cautiously skeptical. D.Somewhat indifferent.【解析】作者的态度在全文多处体现,如第二段中的“However, the real story is notas simple as that.(然而,实际情况并非如此简单。)” √DSpanish scientist Pilar Bosch has found a way to use bacteria to repair 18th-century paintings.Bosch, a microbiologist, tells Reuters she got the idea for the method whileconsidering possibilities for a paper toward her doctoral degree. During this process, she discovered someone else's paper that suggested bacteria can be used to restoreartworks. At around the same time, Bosch learned that her mother was struggling to find agood method for restoring 18th-century paintings. The paintings, by Spanish artistAntonio Palomino, sat in Santos Juanes—one of the oldest churches in the city ofValencia.Bosch said her mother, Pilar Roig, noted how difficult the restoration process atthe church was. One reason was the glue used to remove the paintings from the wallsin the 1960s. The substance was nearly impossible to remove completely.“My mother had a very difficult problem to solve and I found a paper aboutbacteria used to clean murals in Italy,” Bosch said. A fresco is a kind of painting thatoften appears across a large wall.Bosch added she decided to write her doctoral paper on the same subject. Thatwas more than ten years ago. Today, she gets to work with her mother on the churchrestoration. They are using the bacteria method to remove glue from artworks. Themother-daughter team feeds small amounts of the glue—made from animal collagen(胶原)— to the bacteria. After a time, the bacteria begins to naturally produceenzymes(酶) to break down the glue. Then they mix the bacteria with a naturalalgae-based substance, called a gel, and place it onto the paintings. After about threehours, the gel mixture is removed, leaving the paintings glue-free.Bosch's mother, now 75, noted that in the past, restorers of artworks had to usetraditional cleaning methods that “took hours and damaged the painting”. She notedthat several other relatives in the family also work in art restoration. Bosch agreed, saying the work “certainly runs in the family”.Bosch has also used her bacteria removal process in other restoration projects inItaly and Spain. And, she is now training other scientists to use a different kind ofbacteria to clear walls of painted graffiti.【语篇导读】本文是一篇科普说明文,主要介绍了西班牙科学家Pilar Bosch用细菌修复画作。32.Where did Bosch get the idea for the bacteria-based restoration method ( )A.From a research paper she read.B.From her mother's suggestion.C.From a conversation with other scientists.D.From her own paper toward her doctoral degree.【解析】根据第二段“Bosch, a microbiologist, tells Reuters she got the idea for themethod while considering possibilities for a paper toward her doctoral degree. Duringthis process, she discovered someone else's paper that suggested bacteria can be usedto restore artworks.” √33.What does paragraph 6 mainly talk about ( )A.The process of restoring paintings.B.The complexity of the bacteria-based restoration method.C.The complaint about the difficulty of the restoration work.D.The history of the family's engagement in art restoration.【解析】第六段详细描述了母女团队使用细菌修复画作的过程,包括给细菌喂食胶水、细菌产生酶分解胶水、将细菌与凝胶物质混合并涂在画上,以及最后去除凝胶混合物使画作无胶水等步骤,所以该段主要讲的是修复画作的过程,答案选A。 √34.What can be inferred from the passage ( )A.Bosch's method has been put into the markets at home and abroad.B.The bacteria method is less damaging than traditional cleaning methods.C.Bosch's relatives have always been using innovative methods in art restoration.D.The bacteria used in the restoration process will cause harm to the paintings.【解析】文中第七段提到“Bosch's mother, now 75, noted that in the past, restorers ofartworks had to use traditional cleaning methods that ‘took hours and damaged thepainting’.”,而Bosch使用的细菌修复方法与传统方法不同,且她的母亲也认可这种新方法,由此可以推断出细菌方法比传统清洁方法对画作的损害更小,答案选B。 √35.Which of the following is the best title for the passage ( )A.The Future of Art RestorationB.The Challenges of Art RestorationC.Bacteria: Revolutionizing Art RestorationD.Bacteria: Disrupting Art Restoration√【解析】文章主要讲述了Bosch发现并使用细菌修复18世纪画作的方法,C选项“Bacteria:Revolutionizing Art Restoration(细菌:革新艺术修复)”准确地概括了文章内容,强调了细菌对艺术修复的革新作用。 If you listen to the news, you know our national obesity levels are rising.36.___Get more sleep!Sleep is of great importance but almost a third of the US population doesn't getenough to stay physically and mentally healthy. He read books on mountaineering, learned howto use climbing gear(装备), and practiced tying knots. His goal was to climbMount Peakstone, a challenging mountain known for its difficult terrain(地形)and unpredictable weather. On the day of the climb, Tom felt both excited and nervous. He packed hisgear carefully—warm clothes, food, water, and his climbing equipment. As hestood at the base of the mountain, he looked up at the towering peak. It seemedmuch taller in person than it did in the pictures he had seen. For a moment, doubtcrept into his mind. Could he really do this? But Tom pushed the doubt aside. He had come too far to turn back now. With adeep breath, he began his ascent(攀登). The first part of the climb was relativelyeasy. The weather was clear, and the path was well-marked. As he climbed higher, the air grew colder, and the wind picked up, but Tom pressed on, determined toreach the top.About halfway up the mountain, the weather took a sudden turn for the worse.Dark clouds gathered overhead, and snow began to fall heavily. The wind howled, making it difficult to see and even harder to keep his balance. Tom's heart pounded inhis chest. He knew he had to make a decision—should he continue climbing, orshould he turn back? Tom found shelter behind a large rock and took a moment to think.____Step by step, Tom made his way up the mountain, carefully placing hishands and feet on the rock, testing every hold before moving forward.___【参考范文】Tom found shelter behind a large rock and took a moment to think. He had readabout this in the mountaineering books: when the weather turns dangerous, it's oftenbest to stop and wait it out. Cold and a little frightened, Tom thought of calling forrescue for a moment. But Tom was so close to the top and his dream. He thought,if he had quitted this time, he would feel regretful in his later life. He didn't wantto give up now. After a few minutes, he made up his mind. He would continue, but he would be extra cautious.Step by step, Tom made his way up the mountain, carefully placing his handsand feet on the rock, testing every hold before moving forward. His muscles ached, and the cold cut through his clothes, but he focused on thegoal. After what felt like hours, he finally reached the summit. The wind had dieddown, and the clouds began to clear, revealing a breathtaking view of the worldbelow. Tom stood there, tired and exhausted, but filled with a sense ofaccomplishment. As he looked out at the vast landscape, he realized that the journeyhad taught him more than just how to climb a mountain. It had taught him theimportance of perseverance, courage, and believing in himself, even when thingsseemed impossible. The mountain had tested him, but in the end, he proved tohimself that he was capable of achieving his dream.【前文概要】本文以人物为线索展开,讲述了Tom 从小就有着登上高山的梦想,为此他苦练自己的体力和耐力,阅读有关登山的书籍和人物故事,为自己登上高峰做了充足的准备。 21.B。文章中“IN-ROOM BAR"部分提到“Items removed are automatically charged to your account.”,即如果客人从客房内的酒吧拿走物品,该物品将自动计入客人的账户,故选择B选项。22.D。文章中“HOUSEKEEPING SERVICE"部分提到“Your room is serviced daily between8:30 AM and2:30PMMonday through Friday”,星期四属于周一至周五的范畴,l0:00AM在这个时间范围内。 24.B。文中第一段提到“The academic journey was far from easy, filled with demanding tasks such as metalworking, woodworking, and model making.”即学业之旅远非轻松,充满了诸如金属加工、木工和模型制作等艰巨的任务。woodworking(木工)即carpentry(木工活),所以答案是B。25.C。文中第二段提到“The purpose of showing these two different human emotions and human reactions is to allowpeople to reflect upon a variety of different expressions,so that brings up the conversation as to what is the rightway to talk to each other in a public space..”,可以推断出“The Walkway'”是为了让人们思考公共交流。A选项声音来自路人错误,文中提到“Voices and city sounds are played through speakers installed in the walkway.”,声音来自安装的扬声器。B选项墙上都是著名人物的图像与文中“On the walls are images of people.”不符,文中未表明是著名人物;D选项,文中明确指出“The experience becomes dark and violent in the middle part of thewalkway.”,这表明只是通道的中间部分有黑暗和暴力的感觉,而非整个结构都营造出这样的氛围。26.A。“jack of all trades"意为“多面手”。文章最后一段也提到“firmly believing that the best way to learn is throughhands-on work and taking on as many projects as possible'"学习最好的方式是通过实操并且尽可能多地承担很多的项目。
