Though oceans cover about 71 percent of the earth's surface, there's still a lot we don't know about them.Only about 20 percent of the seafloor has been mapped, and the remaining 80 percent is still a secret to us.Some scientists even think that 91 percent of sea animals have yet to be discovered.
So why do we know so little about the deep sea Well, getting to those depths is very difficult and requires high technology that simply didn't come into being for most of human history. The first navigable submarine (可驾驶的潜水艇), for example, was built in 1620, and it couldn't go more than five meters below the surface. In fact, for a long time many scientists didn't even think that there could be any life at depths greater than 550 meters and didn't see much need to explore (探索)the deep sea. However, this changed in 1862 when life was discovered as far down as 945 meters below sea level with the help of a digging machine.Ten years later, around 4,700 species (物种)unknown before from the ocean floor were discovered.
Since then, high technology has been developed to help explore the deep sea, including satellites. But why is deep-sea exploration still so difficult Well,at greater depths it is freezing (极冷的),everything is completely dark, and the pressure can be over 1,000 times greater than that on the surface.
Though we have the difficulties,it's important that we understand the seas. They help control the earth's temperature and produce half of the oxygen(O2)in the air. They can also provide us with information about climate change. Our future depends on learning more about our oceans, and it is possible for us to really understand what is ongoing below the surface.

Do you know stacking(堆叠)and unstacking cups as fast as you can is a sport Believe it or not, it really is. Also known as cup stacking or speed stacking, sport stacking was invented in 1981 by Wayne Godinet,a director of a club in California and was brought to more places by Bob Fox, a P.E. teacher in Colorado. Now competitions of sport stacking are held around the world and many of the competitors are kids. There are three sequences (序列) stacked in sport stacking events, including 3-3-3(uses 9 cups),3-6-3(uses 12 cups)and Cycle(uses cups the same as 3-6-3).
Competitive cup stacking is about speed.Players need to stack cups to build up a series(系列)of pyramids and breaking them down as quickly as possible. They may compete on their own in teams of two(doubles),and in teams of 4 or 5.In Doubles events, one stacker must use only their right hand while the other must use only their left hand.In other words...TWO stack as ONE! Sport stacking does not use common plastic cups.Instead, the special cups are offered to the sport. They have holes in the bottom to help players stack and unstack easily. Sport stacking is safe and inexpensive.Although it doesn't burn a ton of calories(卡路里),it does get players moving because they usually stand when playing, and of course their hands and arms must be very quick! What's more, sport stacking not only develops important physical skills, such as hand-eye coordination (协调) and focus, but also helps players have more self-confidence and better teamwork.

(南平质检)Do you speak a dialect (方言)in daily life While many Chinese people speak Putonghua, some local dialects are in danger of disappearing. To save and preserve (保护) them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project a few years ago.
This project looks at how people talk in 1,712 places.Their languages include 103 dialects that are almost gone. It has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. There's an online library where people can learn dialects from over 5.6 million audio clips (音频) and over 5 million videos.
Why is it important to protect the dialect culture According to the British language expert Harold Palmer, dialects are a key to store local cultures.“Language exactly shows the history, the beliefs and the biases (偏见) of an area,” he said.
Researcher Zhang Hongming expressed his worry over the disappearance of dialects. “For about over 10 years,in the Wu dialect areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand but hardly speak the dialect. At the same time, young people above 15 years old sometimes speak it, but not very well.If this keeps happening, the dialect might disappear,” he said.So how did China make this big library “A big national effort has been put into the project to make it happen,” said Cao Zhiyun, top expert on the project.Over five years, more than 350 universities and research groups joined in, along with over 4,500 experts and more than 6,000 dialect speakers. The project is now entering into its second part. This includes creating digital tools like Apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.

Betty loves to read. Here are some of the books she has read this year and her reviews of them. Read on to see which of the books interests you the most!
The Amazing Edie Eckhart:The Big Trip In this book, a high school girl named Edie has to face her drama teacher. The best part is when Edie gets her friends together to create a play. This play is about what happens at the drama camp. I would recommend this book to someone who likes to read about adventures.
Mia and the Lightcasters This science-fiction story takes place on an island called Lunis. A girl named Mia has to save her home with the help of her little brother and friends. I like the way the writer describes the setting(情节背景)and the characters. The story is scary at times! My favorite character is Mia's trainer Jada because she's really brave.
Rumaysa:A Fairytale This book brings together a few traditional fairy tales in a really amazing way! Several main characters appear in different tales. By the end of the book, they all meet and work together to help others! The pictures in the book show beautiful girls in their pretty dresses. I can't wait to find out if Rumaysa finds what she is looking for.
Little Heidi This is a novel that will never go out of style. A kind and simple girl, Heidi, was sent to the mountains by her aunt and lived with her grandfather. It is widely known that China has the most advanced high-speed railway network (网络) in the world. Now, the country is breaking its own speed record with the CR450.
The CR450 can travel at 400 kilometers per hour on average, with a top speed hitting 453 km/h. Before this, the fastest high-speed train operating in a rail network in the world is China's CR400, which runs at 350 km/h on average.
Once put into use, the CR450 will shorten the travel time from Beijing to Shanghai to just about two and a half hours, which takes at least four and a half hours at the moment.
“The key is not to make the train run fast but to have it brake (刹车) in time and safely,” Zhao Hongwei from the China Academy of Railway Sciences said. The benchmark is that the CR450 should have the same brake distance as the CR400, which is 6,500 meters, even though it travels a lot faster. It can also start braking more quickly, taking just 1.7 seconds compared to the 2.3 seconds needed for the CR400.
The engineers did lots of tests with the brakes to make the system better. In the tests, the brake disc (制动盘) got really hot, reaching temperatures of up to 700 ℃. Its color changed from black to red. Besides having a better braking system, the CR450 has the same noise level as the CR400. It is also 12 percent lighter and 20 percent less energy-consuming (耗能的). With all its advantages, people are getting excited about the train's first appearance, which is planned to be within this year.

Do you want to be an astronaut in the future Every year on April 24, it's Space Day of China. It's a day to celebrate the country's growth in space exploration. The successful manned space tasks are a big part of it.
Ever since Yang Liwei made it to space in 2003, a total of 20 Chinese astronauts, including a civilian (平民), have journeyed to space.
What problems do astronauts face
In space, astronauts face many problems. There is little gravity (重力) there, which influences their bodies. Also, being away from family and friends and living in a tiny spaceship for a long time can make them feel sad or stressed out. What's more, if something goes wrong on their tasks all of a sudden, they will have to work out how to fix it under huge pressure. That's why astronauts have to be smart, strong and ready for any problems before they can go to space.
How are astronauts trained
To make sure Chinese astronauts complete their tasks and return to Earth safely, eight types of training, covering over 200 subjects, are set. Besides physical training, it also includes basic science knowledge and mock (模拟) tasks. Before astronauts can go to space, they train like this for at least three and a half years.
One of the hardest parts of the training for astronauts is the underwater training. This helps them get ready for the weightless environment in space. Astronauts need to wear diving suits that weigh more than 100 kilograms and stay underwater for six hours at a time. Moving around in the water with such a heavy suit is really tiring. One astronaut, Nie Haisheng, even lost two kilograms after one underwater training exercise.
