Are you worried about moving up to Senior High school It can be a new experience, but you
shouldn’t worry. We’ve put together a guide on how to survive the first week.
You’re not alone!
Remember everybody else in your year is on the same boat. They may not realize it, but they’re
just as nervous as you are. Moving to Senior High school is a chance, not a problem. Things are
different and all you need to do is be polite and learn the new rules.

Teachers are ready to help!
If you’re unsure what to do or are worried about anything then you had better ask for help.
Teachers are probably the best people to turn to as they’re experienced in helping new students.
Some Senior High schools also have a “friends system”. If your school has this, then you will be
paired with an older student. They will look out for you and help you if you have any problems or
questions.
All change
There are lots of differences between Junior High school and Senior High school. You’ll have a
homework diary or a student planner. You will have your lessons with different teachers in different
rooms. You will have homework for different subjects on different days, so make sure you get
organized. Make sure you have a copy of your school timetable written down so you know which
rooms your classes are in and on which days you will have your different subjects.
Other points
If you’ve got an elder brother or sister at the school then ask them for advice.
Be yourself! It sounds simple, but people will know you much better if you just act naturally.
Having early nights makes a difference and you’ll find it easier to get up in the morning!
21. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence
A. Other students have similar feelings to yours.
B. Other students have to learn boating with you.
C. Other students will help you solve your problems.
D. Other students will teach you politeness and new rules.
22. Why do the new students turn to teachers first when having problems
A. Because teachers won’t blame them as parents do.
B. Because teachers are good at helping solve problems.
C. Because teachers treat every student fairly.
D. Because parents are too busy to help them.
23. What’s the purpose of the passage
A. To tell students the importance of learning.
B. To make a difference when moving up to Senior High school.
C. To warn students not to ignore friendship in Senior High school.
D. To help new students to get used to the life in Senior High school.

I am sitting at the table in my favorite Boston bookstore-café, laptop open, writing. Ten
minutes ago I ordered coffee. The server—a young, dark-haired woman with a broad smile and
glasses—stopped and quietly said, “I just want to tell you how much your TED talk meant to me,

you helped me find out what I really wanted to do with my life—go to medical school—and then
you helped me do what I needed to do to get there. Thank you.”
Tears in my eyes, I asked, “What’s your name ”
“Fetaine,” she said. Then we talked for the next ten minutes about Fetaine’s challenges in the
past and new-found excitement about her future.
Everyone who communicates with me is special and unforgettable, but this kind of
communication happens far more often than I’d ever have expected: a stranger warmly greets me,
shares a personal story about how they successfully dealt with difficulties, and then simply thanks
me for my part in it. They are women and men, old and young, poor and wealthy. But something
connects them: all have felt powerless (无力的) in the face of great pressure and anxiety, and all
discovered a quite simple way to free themselves from that feeling of powerlessness.
For most writers, the book comes first, then the replies. For me, it was the other way around.
First, I did experiments that led to a talk I gave at the TEDGlobal meeting in 2012. In that talk, I
discussed some interesting findings about how we can quickly increase our confidence and
decrease (减轻) our anxiety in challenging situations. I also shared my own troubles and how I
learned to become more confident. Soon after the twenty-one-minute video of the talk was posted
on the Internet, I began hearing from people who had seen it.
Of course, watching my talk didn’t magically give Fetaine the knowledge she needed to do
well on Medical College Admission Test. But it may have helped her get out of the fear that could
have stopped her from expressing the things she knew.
24. What happened in the Boston bookstore-café
A. The writer waited ten minutes for her coffee.
B. The writer came across a friend of hers.
C. A waitress expressed her thanks to the writer.
D. A waitress encouraged the writer to give a TED talk.
25. What do those people who communicate with the writer have in common
A. They once faced problems and felt helpless.
B. They shared personal stories about strangers.
C. They were famous but under great pressure.
D. They were afraid to communicate with others.
26. What may be the topic of the writer’s talk in 2012
A. How to increase confidence. B. How to perform meaningful experiments.
C. How to overcome anxiety in a talk. D. How to find interesting things in life.

B. She helped Fetaine with her knowledge.
C. She advised Fetaine to go to medical school.

You may have already seen them in some restaurants around the world: robots. They are
about the size of a child. They can welcome people and lead them to their tables. They can take
food and drinks and bring dirty dishes back to the kitchen.
Many people think robot waiters are the answer to worker shortages (短缺). Sales of robots
have been growing in recent years. There are tens of thousands of them now moving through
eating places worldwide.
But others say robot waiters still have a long way to go before they can replace (代替 )
humans. They cannot take orders. And they cannot walk up steps to different areas of a restaurant.
Still the use of robots is growing. In Madison Heights, Michigan, Li Zhai was having trouble
finding workers for his restaurant Noodle Topia in the summer of 2021. So, he bought a robot
from Pudu Robotics. The robot was so successful that he added two more; now, one robot leads
diners (就餐者) to their seats while another delivers food to tables. And his employees (员工) put
dirty dishes onto the third robot to bring them back to the kitchen.
Zhai said he now needs three people to do the same work that five or six people used to do.
And they save him money. A robot costs around $15,000, he said, but a person costs him $5,000
to $6,000 per month. Zhai noted that the robots give his human servers more time to spend with
diners, which increases tips. And diners often post videos of the robots on social media, which
leads to more visits. “Besides saving labor (劳动力), the robots benefit (使受益) the business,” he
said.
But not all restaurants have had success with robots. Chili’s introduced a robot server in 2020.
The restaurant company expanded (扩大) the test to 61 U.S. restaurants before suddenly stopping
last August. Chili’s found that the robot moved too slowly and got in the way of human servers.
And 58 percent of guests surveyed (调查) said robots did not improve their experience.
28. What is Li Zhai’s third robot used to do
A. Lead diners to their seats. B. Take food to tables.
C. Take orders from customers. D. Carry away dirty dishes.
29. What do Li Zhai’s words mainly tell us in Paragraph 5
A. The popularity of robots. B. The low prices of robots.
C. The advantages of using robots. D. The impression of robots on people.

A. They broke down easily. B. They didn’t work well enough.
C. They often made big mistakes. D. They couldn’t understand customers’ need.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Are Robot Waiters the Future B. Will Human Servers Lose Jobs

Researchers in Australia, who studied 1,500 people and their lifestyles, have found that having
good friends can help you live longer. An American study of 10,000 students, over a period of 35
years, also found that if you make more friends than the average (普通的) person at school, you’ll
receive a higher salary (工资) in later life. People need good social skills at work to manage people
and work in a team successfully. These are the same skills we use to make friends at school.
On average, teenagers aged between 15 and 17 have 500 “friends” on their favourite social
networking site. Adults (成年人) have 130. So if you believe this research, you might live for a long
time and be very rich.
However, according to Professor Robin Dunbar from the University of Oxford, it probably
won’t make any difference. Dunbar studied the number of messages between users of a popular
social networking website, each of whom had between 200 and 2,000 friends. He found that they
always communicate with a maximum (最大量) of 150 people.
Among these 150, Dunbar believes that around five people are close friends. You’ve most likely
known them for a long time; they are probably old friends and you share all your good and bad
experiences with them. Then there are ten more friends. Although they’re close to you, you may not
keep in touch with them every week. Next there are 35 people who you might spend time with
because of a shared interest. You aren’t close. And finally, there’s a large group of 100. You see or
speak to these people at least once a year, but you don’t know them well. Beyond (超过) this number,
Dunbar says, it’s impossible to make any relationship meaningful.
If you have a lot of online “friends”, try this experiment: First take away anyone you haven’t
been in touch with for a year. Then remove people you can’t remember and, finally, take away
friends who you wouldn’t mind losing touch with. How many do you have left How many of these
people are actually good friends According to the research, these are the only people that really
matter.
32. What are the studies in the first paragraph mainly about
A. The number of friends you should have.
B. The advantages of having a lot of friends.
C. Some social skills you may need at work.
D. Some useful advice on how to make friends.

33. According to the American study, which is true about the most popular students at school
A. They are likely to spend more money.
B. They may not be as popular at work.
C. They seem to get better-paid jobs.
D. They will work harder in later years.
34. What does the underlined part “this number” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. 10. B. 35.
C. 100. D. 150.
35. What does the text mainly want to show
A. You need to spend more time with your friends.
B. There is a lot of research on the influence of friends.
C. Friends are sometimes more important than family.
D. It’s more important to have good friends than lots of friends.

导语:本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了作者的TED演讲视频帮助了许多在生活中面临着压力和焦虑的人。
24. 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“The server—a young, dark-haired woman with a broad smile and glasses—stopped and quietly said, ‘I just want to tell you how much your TED talk meant to me, you helped me find out what I really wanted to do with my life—go to medical school—and then you helped me do what I needed to do to get there. Thank you.’(服务员——一个年轻的黑发女人,脸上挂着灿烂的笑容,戴着眼镜——停了下来,平静地说:‘我只想对你说你的TED演讲对我来说有多重要,你帮我找到了我一生中真正想做的事情——上医学院——然后你帮我做了我到那一步所需要做的事情。谢谢你。’)”可知,在波士顿书店咖啡馆中,一位女服务员向作者表达了感谢,作者的TED演讲对她产生了重大影响。故选C。

Dear Terry,
How are you doing In your last letter, you asked me about being a guest to a Chinese friend’s home. Now, I am writing to inform you of some practical details.
To begin with, according to our tradition, you are supposed to arrive early, so that you can help the family prepare the dinner, which is not only meaningful but also interesting. Besides, you’d better bring some gifts, such as a book or a Chinese knot. What’s more, when you are enjoying the meal, you need to avoid making noises while chewing food.
Hopefully, these suggestions would be helpful for you. I have the confidence that you will have a great time. I am looking forward to your good news. Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
