The history of Cuju
On July 15th, 2004, the FIFA President Mr. Blatter announced to the world “Football comes from China’’. Zibo, Shandong is considered as the home of football..
Cuju has a history of over two thousand years. It started from Chunqiu Period. The ball was made of leather(皮革), filled with hair. Its weight was about 500g.
In early Han dynasty, Cuju is a means of training soldiers(士兵). It’s helpful to build soldiers’ body. Later, it wasn’t only a competition, but also a kind of performance.
In Tang dynasty, a large number of people were fond of Cuju. Cuju culminated(达到顶点) in this period. The game had several different ways to play. What’s more, even women loved to play Cuju.At the same time, the Japanese and Korean learnt cuju from China.
In the 1600s, cuju was transmitted to Europe by Arabian, it’s in England that cuju was replaced by modern football.
Unfortunately, Cuju was forbidden(禁止) in the army during the Ming dynasty .Because the emperor thought it was indecent(有伤风化的) that some officers indulged(沉湎于) in playing this game with women. But Cuju was still popular among the people.
In the Qing dynasty, Cuju was totally banned (禁止)by the government. The government was afraid that people wasted too much time on Cuju as they did in the Ming dynasty.
Since then, the Cuju declined(衰退)and soon afterwards the modern football was introduced into China.
In fact, in July 1958, FIFA President Joao Havelange visited China, he expressed: football originated in(起源于) China. Of course, due to(由于) the limitations of the feudal society(封建社会), China's ancient Cuju ultimately did not develop into a "fair competition" for the principles of modern sport. This is a qualitative leap in the British capitalism completed.
Now, Cuju is protected as a kind of culture heritage(遗产)of China .We should spare no effects to protect our culture heritage.
