Have you ever eaten anything that you grew in your own garden Many people have not had the pleasure of this experience. Alice Waters, the owner of Chez Panisse Restaurant, set out to change all that for a special group of students at Martin Luther King Junior Middle School in Berkeley, California.

In ancient China, there was a tradition called shu xiu. People gave teachers dried salted meat as a gift to show their respect for teachers.
At that time, people didn’t get to eat meat very often because it was expensive. It was so valuable that people could even trade it for other things. So giving teachers dried salted meat as a gift when children started school showed that ancient people respected teachers and valued education highly.
The practice of shu xiu started over 2,000 years ago. And it lasted for many centuries until the Tang Dynasty. Over time, shu xiu took on different forms, and the meaning of it changed as well. Some people used it to refer to the money students paid for their education at school and even called a teacher’s salary (薪水) shu xiu.
In modern times, teachers in China are still highly respected and valued, but the ways of showing thanks to them have changed. People no longer use shu xiu to refer to the money for school or a teacher’s salary.

Are you an “I person” or an “E person” These two personality labels (个性标签) are widely discussed online. They are part of a popular personality test called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI. Susan is an English girl. She is fourteen years old. She came to China with her parents two years ago. Her father is a teacher and her mother is a doctor. Now they both work in Guangzhou.
It was the Dragon Boat Festival yesterday. When Susan got up in the morning, it was raining. After she had some zongzi for breakfast, the rain stopped. She walked towards the Pearl River with her parents and they arrived there twenty minutes later. At half past nine, the sun came out and the dragon boat race started. It was really exciting and it lasted one and a half hours. How happy they were!
