My father died when I was five. It was hard on us all. My brother, who is eight years older than me, began to take care of my mother and me.
He took on more responsibilities than expected. I remember he made sure the rubbish was taken out, and the yard was cleaned. He did on his own, without being told to do so.
Because of my father's death, Mom had to get a full-time job. Brother would get me up for school and make me breakfast. While I was eating, he would lay out my clothes, make my bed, and gather my school books up.
Hand in hand we would walk to the bus stop. As we waited, he would play games my father used to play with me. When we returned from school, we were alone for about half an hour, until Mom was home from work. Before I did my homework, he would sit down with three cookies and a glass of milk. Then he would prepare something for Mom to cook dinner.
Mom would greet us with a hug and kiss. This was our time to have some fun outside. This was my brother's time to be a kid.
One Saturday in June several years later, my mother and I were at a store where the Father's Day cards were sold. I stared at the cards. Mom said, ” Cindy, I know this is hard time for you. ”
“No, Mom. That's not it. Why don't they have Brother's Day cards ”
She smiled, “You’ re right, your brother has exactly been a father to you. Go ahead to choose a card. ”
I did so, and on Father's Day, my mother and I sat my brother down and gave him the card. As he read it, I saw the tears in his eyes. Mom said, “Son, your father is proud of you, seeing that he raised a good man, and that you do your best to fill his shoes. We love you and thank you. ”

Headphones are helpful. Many kids use them. But headphones can be harmful, too. They can cause hearing loss if the volume (音量) is too loud. Studies show that one out of every ten kids in the United States has some hearing loss. The cause is loud noise.
Do you know how we hear There are cells (细胞) inside the ears that help us hear. We can't see them with our eyes. “We call them hair cells,” Jackie Clark said. “They look like hairs standing up.” Clark is a scientist at the University of Texas. She studies noises and ears. Loud noises can damage (损伤) these cells. And once the cells are damaged, they don't grow back. Sometimes, there's tinnitus. “It's like someone is playing a note on the flute (长笛) for a long time,” Clark says. It shows we're losing hearing. Tinnitus is not only harmful to our ears, but also it can make us feel uneasy. That's why it's necessary to protect our ears.
How can we protect our ears We'd better keep the volume low when we use our headphones. We should be able to hear sounds around us. And other people shouldn't hear noise from our headphones. “if I can hear what you' re listening to when you' re wearing your headphones, ” Clark says, “it's too loud. ” To protect our ears, keep our headphones at about half volume.

September is a big month for students in China since the new term begins from now on. In ancient China, the school entrance ceremony (入学典礼) was one of the most important ceremonies.
Children began school between the ages of 4-7 in ancient China. Since there was no certain time to begin a new term at that time, the most important thing for parents was to choose a lucky day for their children to enter school. Next, parents would prepare some school things for their children, including desks, chairs and four treasures of the study.
In ancient times, teachers were usually very knowledgeable local persons. Parents would prepare many gifts, and then write a letter of invitation to ask a knowledgeable man to be their children's teacher.
On the day their children entered school, parents would take them to take part in the First Writing Ceremony. Before that, children would kowtou(叩头) to the statue of Confucius(孔子像)9 times and then to their teacher 3 times to show their deep respect. During the ceremony, the teacher would put a red point on the students' forehead(前额) as it meant opening the wisdom eye. Children would also ring a certain bell to start a new term. After that, they could finally sit down in their seats and begin to study. The First Writing Ceremony was a very important ceremony for every student.
Every day, students would arrive school earlier than their teacher, and kowtou to the statue of Confucius, and then go back to the seats. Usually the teacher would give every student a new name, which was used for the future Imperial Examination (科举考试).
Today, some schools are starting to hold an entrance ceremony like what they did in ancient times. Students put on traditional costumes and bow to the statue of Confucius and their teachers. This means that from this moment, they take a step in the lifelong journey of learning.
