I didn't quite know what I was looking for when I flew to Mongolia for a term abroad. I just needed something different, far from the late-night libraries of my college town. Most different, I hoped, would be my rural homestay: two weeks in central Mongolia with a family of nomadic（游牧的） herders.
I was studying Mongolian at the time, but still, there was so much I couldn't say or understand. As we walked in the snow behind the goats, my host mom would ask me if I was cold, then giggle（咯咯地笑） and copy a big shiver to make sure I understood. Scientists have developed a flying dragon, called the Dragon Firefighter that will be able to fight fire- by shooting water out of its mouth.
The Dragon, invented by Japanese researchers, is expected to join firefighter teams to put out fires that are too large and dangerous for humans to fight. "We here present a prototype（原型） of a four-meter-long, remotely controllable flying firehose （消防水带） robot, designed to safely and quickly put out fires in buildings by directly getting close to the fire sources," said Dr Yuichi Ambe, from Osaka University. Researchers also worked closely with Japanese firefighters to understand the type of help they may need when fighting bigger fires.
This is not the first time the robot has shown its potential to the world, however. The Dragon Firefighter was introduced at the World Robot Summit in 2021, where it managed to put out a fire around 4 meters away. "Since the show at the World Robot Summit, we have continued to work on improving our Dragon and have learned many new things," said Dr Yu Yamauchi, from Aki a Prefectural University.
"For example, we found that the original passive dampening mechanism （洒水机制） had its problem: it took too long to prepare for flight. We also found that heat from fires can greatly influence the outdoor applications of the corrugated tube（波纹管） that holds the water hose and electric cables（电缆）."
Since its first show, improvements have been made to improve the mouth it uses to shoot out water. Despite this, it could be a long time before you see the Dragon Firefighter out in the real world. China's space medicine experts have started planning to set up a "space hospital" to serve astronauts, according to Du Jichen, a leading scientist and president of the Aerospace Center Hospital in Beijing.
"We are carrying out extensive research, experiments and tests on the ground to advance the first work on a space hospital that can be fixed inside a manned spacecraft like our space station. The purpose of this project is that it will enable our space explorers to travel deeper and stay healthy during their journey," said Du.

Chinese space medicine experts have been discussinga sustainable approach to keep astronauts fit and treat possible health conditions in lengthy spaceflights.
"A mainstream idea is that we can place a small 'medical complex' inside the space station or other spacecraft that can meet the basic needs of diagnosis and treatment," the scientist said.
Du said that with the medical facility, astronauts will be able to use self-examination instruments to make a diagnosis if they do not feel well, and then can take timely medical measures. Currently, medical support for astronauts mostly relies on doctors on the ground.
The biggest challenge in this program is that engineers must figure out how to pack medical devices into a very limited space, Du said, adding that they need to upgrade current technologies and use interdisciplinary （跨学科） teamwork to achieve this goal. Medical scientists and engineers have conducted a great deal of research to prepare Chinese astronauts for the missions, Du said.
