April 27 brings Independent Bookstore Day, the biggest bookstore celebration of the year when bookstores around the country host events and offer discounts. Here’s a selection of bookstores we love writing about.
Books on Main
Books on Main feels like you’re reading inside a tree-house in a Wisconsin forest. It opened in June 2023. Local residents have a welcoming place decorated with wood, leaves and comfortable furniture to gather and discover new and beloved books.
Off the Beaten Path Bookstore
First opened more than 30 years ago, Off the Beaten Path has been through three sets of owners and three locations. Current owners Mike and Danielle Skov say one thing has never changed: The promise to be a welcoming and inclusive (包容的) space. They partner with local schools, libraries and nonprofits to reach as much of the community as possible.
Changing Hands Bookstore
Too popular to be called a hidden gem (宝石), this Arizona jewel recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. It first opened in a 500-square-foot space in 1974. It hosts author events, poetry discussion groups and offers a Trade Counter where customers can bring in gently used books for store credit.
The Last Chapter Book Shop
The Last Chapter is an all-romance bookstore in Chicago that opened in 2023. The store hosts author events along with community mixers like Blind Date with a Book, where you wrap one of your favorite books and “trade” it with a fellow book fan in hopes of finding a new favorite and a new friend.

Sia Godika was 13 when she noticed the barefoot (赤脚的) children of construction workers at a building site near her house in the upscale Koramangala district of Bangalore, India.
“They were just walking around that building site with their feet bare, hard, dirty and bleeding, as though it was an everyday practice for them,” reflects Sia, now 17. And it was in that moment that Sia realised the troubling contrast (对比) to her own life.
She went back home, looked at her feet and opened her wardrobe doors, seeing shoes—many of which hadn’t been worn for months or years—piled up high. She headed to her mother’s wardrobe next, dusting off cobwebs from some shoes. Then she rushed to give them all for free to the same children she saw at the building site.
Later that year, with the help of her parents and community volunteers, Sia founded Sole Warriors, a charity dedicated to providing footwear to those in need, epitomised by its motto: “Donate a shoe, save a soul.”
The idea, which started as a dinner conversation with her parents, quickly grew. After she spread the word with posters and social media, emails from people who wanted to help came flooding in. Now in its fifth year, the organization runs distribution (分送) drives in which Sole Warriors collects used footwear, refurbishes (翻新) it and donates the finished products to people in need.
That need, says Sia, is endless. In a world where the poorest half of the population owns just two per cent of the wealth, an estimated 300 million people can’t afford footwear. Of the nearly 24 billion shoes made every year, shockingly more than 90 per cent end up in landfills
In its first distribution drive, Sole Warriors collected and gave out 700 pairs of shoes. Today that number stands at around 28,000 across four countries, including the United States, China and Liberia, thanks to the hard work of a core team of about 80 volunteers.
But the organization’s growth wasn’t without its challenges. When it came to looking for partners, such as a company that would do the refurbishments (翻新) free, Sia faced one difficulty after another before finding a partner in India’s Pressto Cobbler.
To honor her impact, in 2021 Sia was given the Diana Award, one of the most prestigious (声誉高的) honors a young person can receive for social action. But her work isn’t done. “Our goal has always been to touch a million feet,” she says.
20. ________ inspired Sia to donate shoes to the children at the building site.
A. Her parents ’and community volunteers’ help
B. The sight of children without wearing shoes
C. The piles of shoes in her parents’ wardrobe
D. Her comfortable life in the upper class
21. The underlined word “dedicated” in para.4 can be replaced with ________.
A. addicted B. exposed C. opposed D. devoted
22. What can be inferred about Sia’s charitable work
A. Sia met many challenges caused by Pressto Cobbler.
B. Sia is ambitious to expand her project by donating more shoes.
C. Sia was awarded Diana Award for her work at 20.
D. Sia’s project recycles 90% of used shoes in landfills.
23. Which of the following is probably the best title of the text
A. Task Achieved by Willpower B. Sufferings at Indian Building Site
C. Walking in Someone Else’s Shoes D. Favourite for the Diana Award
C
Everyone knows this: Slowly turn up the heat on a frog in a pot of water, and the frog won’t hop out. Unaware of the slight increase in heat, it will stay until —well, until it dies. When it comes to the effect of rising global temperatures on amphibians (两栖动物), the frog-boiling story is more than just a metaphor (隐喻).
Climate change is becoming one of the biggest threats to frogs and other amphibians, according to a major study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. Between 2004 and 2022, rising temperatures became the main reason why more than 100 amphibian species were nearly dying out.
The spread of disease among frogs and the destruction of their habitats have long been recognized as reasons why many amphibians are decreasing. But this new study establishes climate change as a major risk for amphibians around the world, too. The soft-skinned animals lack the fur and feathers to help adjust (调节) their temperature in this hotter and drier world.
Less attention is paid to frogs and other amphibians compared to more well-known groups like birds. But losing amphibians would be serious because they often act as a key link in the food web of ecosystems, wolfing insects down and, in turn, being eaten by larger predators (捕食者). “Without those amphibians to fill that role, we will see the breakdown of this food web,” said Neam, who works for an Austin-based environmental group.
Luckily, habitat protection and other measures have been taken to help recover more than five dozen amphibians from Costa Rica to Malaysia. “It’s not all bad news,” said Jennifer Luedtke, an amphibian group leader with the International Union for Conservation of Nature. “But we really must build on this improvement and significantly increase the amphibian conservation.”
24. How is the topic introduced
A. By sharing a story. B. By raising a question. C. By explaining ideas. D. By listing facts.
25. What is the main reason for the decrease of amphibians according to the new study
A. The loss of habitats. B. The lack of feathers. C. The spread of disease. D. The rise of temperature.
26. What will happen if the number of amphibians decreases
A. Wolves will depend more on insects. B. Predators will be the key role of the web.
C. The ecosystem will become more diverse. D. The food chain will be destroyed.
27. How does Luedtke feel about the future of amphibians
A. Uncertain. B. Curious. C. Hopeful. D. Worried.
D
Free-riding means people can benefit from a service without paying anything. It also arises if people can get benefit without making equal contributions. So a free rider always enjoys the benefits of a resource or service while letting someone else do the work or do more work.
There are several effects of the free rider problem. The first is the Tragedy (悲剧) of the Commons, a situation in which individuals with access to a public resource act for their own benefit and, in doing so, finally use up the resource. For example, imagine that a group of people share a piece of land where they all graze (让……吃草) their cattle. If each person just tries to increase their own short-term gain, they will let their cattle graze as much as possible. However, if everyone does this, the land will quickly become over-grazing and will not be able to support any cattle.
Another effect is that the free rider problem can lead to a situation in which people do not have access to important goods and services. This is because providers may not be able to get back the costs of providing the goods or services if too many people free ride. Imagine that a city decides to build a new hospital through donations. If too many people rely on others to donate, rather than donate themselves, then the hospital may not be built at all. This means that people who need medical care in the area may not have access to it.
There are several solutions to the free rider problem. Government solves the problem by collecting tax (税) dollars to support public services. Theoretically, taxes are related to income, so fair cost-sharing can be munities can turn their public resource into a private or club resource, charging money to make sure everyone who uses it contributes to it. This will limit overuse and, over time, may even lead to altruistic (利他的) behavior. That is, many people may like the idea of making a small contribution to a resource that they use.
28. Which of the following may best show the nature of free-riding
A. Many hands make light work. B. Let George do it.
C. Every coin has two sides. D. Less is more.
29. What is one of the effects produced by the free rider problem
A. The costs of providing the goods and services are rising.
B. People tend to maximize their long-term gain.
C. A group of people have to share goods and services.
D. Individuals overuse a shared resource for personal gain.
30. How is paragraph 3 mainly developed
A. By giving an example. B. By explaining a definition.
C. By referring to a study. D. By making a comparison.
31. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To call on the government to solve the free rider problem.
B. To inform the readers of the free rider problem.
C. To stress the importance of making donations.
D. To draw people’s attention to public services.

As Christmas decorations appeared in town, our parents called my two younger brothers and me together. At first, I thought someone had died, because I had never seen my parents look so sad. My brothers and I stood waiting for the awful news.
Mom hugged me as she murmured, “Christmas is going to be different this year. We won’t be having a tree or presents. We can barely afford food.” Dad, resting on the couch, wrapped the boys. “Things will change when I get back to work.”
My family was poorer than dirt. Dad, the only bread-earner in our family, worked in a coal mine. However, soon after returning to work at the end of a long strike, Dad was hurt in a rock fall that broke bones in his foot. Lying on the couch with the swollen (肿胀的) foot high on pillows, he didn’t talk or smile much. There was little to smile about. No work, no income.
At nine years old, I mothered my younger brothers: Rodney, aged six, and Stevie, three. We shared a small bedroom. That night, after our parents’ announcement, we talked.
Rodney began. “Erm, did you see how sad Mommy and Daddy looked I thought Mommy was gonna cry.”
“Me, too. Daddy’s foot’s ... this big” whispered Stevie, holding out his arms.
“Yeah ... We’re in hard times,” I said. “It makes Mommy and Daddy sad.”
“But we don’t have to be sad,” I added, hoping to cheer them up.
“Since there are still several weeks to go, maybe we can do something to cheer them up,” I said with overdone enthusiasm. The boys proposed, “We can take the money from our piggy bank ... earn some more ... and surprise them with gifts!”
“I can run errands (跑腿) for Aunt ... erm ... and neighbors to earn money,” I offered.
“Yeah,” Rodney added, “Stevie and I can return bottles and save the money ... instead of buying candy!” He pushed Stevie gently with his elbow.
“Yeah!” Stevie clutched his hands together.
We had a plan!
Until they felt sleepy, I guided my little brothers (especially Stevie) in ways to keep our secret. “Don’t talk about it during the day.”
We awoke in the morning, transforming from sad children to the secret agents (特工) on an important plan! On Christmas morning, we hurried into the living room and handed the gifts to Mommy and Daddy.

We awoke in the morning, transforming from sad children to the secret agents on an important plan! In the following weeks, we were occupied with activities: I was delivering newspapers across the neighborhood while my younger brothers were collecting bottles. Having earned enough money, we happily went shopping. A new apron was a must for mom, and for Dad, branded ointments (膏药) could greatly help relieve his pain. On the night of Christmas Eve, I tossed and turned, picturing mom’s and dad’s smiling faces when receiving our gifts.
On Christmas morning, we hurried into the living room and handed the gifts to Mommy and Daddy. They could hardly believe their eyes! Surprised and confused, they flooded us with many questions: “How did you get the money for gifts ” “Who of you got the amazing idea ” ... As we explained how we had planned and how we had carefully chosen the gifts, their faces changed into expressions of movement. Then, with glistening tears in eyes, Mom and Dad hugged and kissed us. This Christmas morning has brought our family closer.

People who live in cities usually take their dirty clothes to a laundry place called a “laundromat”. These public businesses are usually open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. A smaller laundromat might have 12 washers and 12 dryers. while a larger one might have twice that number.
Most places do not have any employees there, as there are simple instructions posted near the machines and everything can be done without assistance. Most people bring their own washing soap, but there is often a machine that sells small packages in case you run out or forget yours.
During the weekend, it can be hard to find an open machine but it is much easier during the week. Many laundry places have TVs, magazines, or free Wi-Fi. Recently, many laundry places have added cafés or bars. Because people usually spend a few hours doing their laundry, having a drink or a meal is a convenient and fun way to pass the time. Of course, when so many people are washing their clothes close to each other, it is easy to make mistakes.

They were just walking around that building site with their feet bare, hard, dirty and bleeding, as though it was an everyday practice for them,” reflects Sia, now 17.
And it was in that moment that Sia realized the troubling contrast to her own privilege. 就在那一刻,西娅意识到这与她自己的特权形成了令人不安的对比)”和第三段中“Then she rushed to give them all away to the same children she saw at the building site.
根据画线词所在的句子“Later that year, with the help of her parents and community volunteers, Sia founded Sole Warriors, a charity dedicated to providing footwear to those in need (那年晚些时候,在父母和社区志愿者的帮助下,Sia成立了Sole Warriors慈善机构,致力于为有需要的人提供鞋子)”可推知,该慈善机构致力于要为有需要的人提供鞋子,画线词意思应该是“致力于”,可被devoted替换。

根据第一段“Everyone knows this: Slowly turn up the heat on a frog in a pot of water, and the frog won’t hop out. Unaware of the slight increase in heat, it will stay put until —well, until it dies. When it comes to the effect of rising global temperatures on amphibians (两栖动物), the frog-boiling fable is more than just a metaphor (隐喻). (每个人都知道这一点:在一锅水里慢慢地给青蛙加热,青蛙不会跳出来。没有意识到热量的轻微增加,它会一直呆在那里,直到——嗯,直到它死去。当谈到全球气温上升对两栖动物的影响时,煮青蛙的寓言不仅仅是一个比喻)”可知,文章通过分享故事引入。故选A。
根据第二段“Between 2004 and 2022, rising temperatures became the primary reason why more than 100 amphibian species were nearly dying out. (2004年至2022年间,气温上升成为100多种两栖动物濒临灭绝的主要原因)”可知,根据这项新研究,导致两栖动物数量减少的主要原因是温度的升高。故选D。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Less attention is paid to frogs and other amphibians compared to more well-known groups like birds.

根据文章第一段“Free-riding means people can benefit from a service without paying anything. It also arises if people can get benefit without making equal contributions. So a free rider always enjoys the benefits of a resource or service while letting someone else do the work or do more work. (搭便车意味着人们无需支付任何费用就可以从一项服务中获益。如果人们不做出同等的贡献就能获得利益,也会出现这种情况。所以搭便车者总是享受某种资源或服务的好处,而让别人做这些工作或做更多的工作)”可知,选项B “Let George do it. (让乔治来做吧。)”最能体现搭便车的本质,意味着让别人去做事,而自己享受成果,符合搭便车者不付出成本却享受利益的行为特点。故选B。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段中的“There are several effects of the free rider problem. The first is the Tragedy (悲剧) of the Commons, a situation in which individuals with access to a public resource act in their own interest and, in doing so, finally use up the resource. (搭便车问题有几个影响。第一种是“公共地悲剧”,在这种情况下,拥有公共资源的个人为了自己的利益而行动,最终耗尽了资源)”可知,搭便车问题产生的影响之一是共享资源因个人追求私利而被过度使用。故选D。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Another effect is that the free rider problem can lead to a situation in which people do not have access to important goods and services. 故选A。
通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“Free-riding means people can benefit from a service without paying anything. It also arises if people can get benefit without making equal contributions. So a free rider always enjoys the benefits of a resource or service while letting someone else do the work or do more work. (搭便车意味着人们无需支付任何费用就可以从一项服务中获益。如果人们不做出同等的贡献就能获得利益,也会出现这种情况。所以搭便车者总是享受某种资源或服务的好处,而让别人做这些工作或做更多的工作)”和最后一段中“There are several solutions to the free rider problem. (有几种解决搭便车问题的方法)”可知,文章整体介绍了什么是搭便车问题、它产生的几个效应以及针对这一问题的几种解决方案。其主要目的是告知读者搭便车问题的存在及其影响,以及可能的解决办法。故选B。
