My eye-opening years living among the locals in Nicaragua
Having lived among the locals in Nicaragua (尼加拉瓜) or what is now three years, I’ve experienced cultural differences that are still alien to my British eyes.
While I find it rather disgraceful to try to attract the attention of someone with a sound which a Brit would reserve only for calling animals, for him this is perfectly normal and polite. I also think it is rude to walk into a shop and say give me without a please or a thank you but he doesn’t and neither does the shopkeeper.
I have also had to learn yet another foreign language of hand gestures and body language. “Come here” is always done with the palm down, smacking the elbows implies a person is tight with their money and the strangers one of all for me is — pointing with the lips the first few times this happened it looked like someone was blowing me a kiss — how wrongly I could have translated that one.
Economic status of Nicaragua, one of the poorest Central American nations, influences its culinary practices. I have to confess to becoming thoroughly bored with gallo pinto — the ubiquitous rice and beans dish of Nicaragua—after a few weeks but for many Nicaraguans this is breakfast, lunch and dinner, their whole life. It is the cheapest way to keep the family fed and where food is concerned nothing here is wasted.
Can you imagine piling the entire family onto a scooter (小型摩托车) It’s perfectly normal for Nicaraguans. Dad drives, the child old enough to stand is perched on the footplate holding onto the handlebars, a toddler clings onto dad’s back while mum with a babe in arms is riding (sometimes side-saddle) at the back.
Even after three years, it still fascinates me that the locals can sit in a rocking chair outside their houses, doing nothing for hours, without getting bored. There have been times when i have been led to question my own attitudes and been shown levels of patience, bravery and positivity in the face of hardship which my own culture could learn a great deal from.
14. Which of the following actions is unusual for Nicaraguans
A. Pointing to the things they want with the lip.
B Showing their strength by smacking the elbows.
C. Serving customers without saying “please” or “thank you”.
D. Greeting with a sound of what a Brit thinks of as calling animals.
15. Which word can best replace the underlined word “culinary” in Paragraph 4
A. Trading. B. Cooking. C. Traveling. D. Communicating.
16. How many family members can be on a scooter according to the text
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
17. What does the writer think of Nicaraguan culture after there for three years
A Strange and boring. B. Simple and uncivilized.
C. Backward but fascinating. D. Surprising but worth learning.
C
On October 12, 2021, China officially announced its first five national parks, which are homes to endangered species ranging from the Siberian tigers on the Russian border to the world’s last 30 Hainan black crested gibbons (黑冠长臂猿) in southern China’s tropical rainforest.
By uniting hundreds of protected areas managed by various provinces, the new national park system’s goal is to strengthen conservation under the central authority of the new National Forestry and Grassland Administration (NFGA).
These five parks cover an area two-third the size of the US national park system. The largest, Sanjiangyuan National Park in Qinghai Province, is almost the size of Mississippi.
With such an ambitious plan, there are bound to be challenges. For one the government has to balance the need for the livelihoods of the locals with wildlife conservation. It has not announced a plan to create a permitting system that would regulate how people enjoy nature. What’s more, ecotourism-which is defined as tourism that benefits both locals and their environment-only exists in a fifth of China’s nature reserves.
But there’s hope that the existing ecotourism projects in such nature reserves as Sanjiangyuan National Park and Wolong Nature Reserve will inspire efforts elsewhere in the new park system. Since 2018, Sanjiangyuan National Park has run a community-led tourism program that benefits both locals and snow leopards (豹), the park’s main tourist draw. For $43 a day, visitors can stay with local families, who act as guides to spot these rare “cats” in the wild.
“The community has made all the major decisions, and 100 percent of the income stays in the community. It’s been incredibly successful,” says Marc Brody, who has worked in China since 1994.
NFGA agrees that well-designed ecotourism can improve local ecosystems. It says that a core mission (核心使命) of China’s national parks is to promote eco-civilization mission that can be advanced by involving visitors. Written into China’s constitution (宪法) in 2012, eco-civilization means scientifically balancing the economic development and the environmental protection.
18. Which park is home to the thirty endangered gibbons
A. Hainan National Park. B. Wolong Nature Reserve.
C. Northeast National Park. D. Sanjiangyuan National Park.
19. What can be learned about Sanjiangyuan National Park
A. It is bigger than Mississippi. B. It sits on the Russian border.
C. It is a pioneer in ecotourism. D. It has a mature permitting system.
20. What is the main purpose of China’s national parks
A. To protect the endangered animals.
B. To help the local people out of poverty.
C. To give equal importance to the economy and the environment.
D. To set a better development example for the world.
21. Which is the best title of the passage
A. New Chapter in China’s First National Parks: Eco-Civilization.
B. National Parks Under Construction: Hope or Challenge
C. How to Balance Economic Development and Environmental Protection
D. Sanjingyuan National Park - China’s Hidden Natural Treasure
D
Researchers in China have developed a robotic chemist powered by Al that might be able to obtain oxygen from water on Mars. The robot uses materials found on the red planet to produce catalysts (催化剂) that break down water, releasing oxygen.
“If you think about the challenge of going to Mars, you have to work with local materials,” says Andy Cooper, a chemist at the University of Liverpool. “So I can see the logic behind it.”
The study was led by Jun Jiang at the University of Science and Technology of China. Jiang and his team used a mobile machine the size of a refrigerator with a robotic arm to analyse five meteorites (陨石) that had come from Mars, The team’s goal was to investigate whether the machine could produce useful catalysts from the material.
The AI-powered system used some chemicals to dissolve (溶解) and separate the material, then analysed the resulting substances that consists of two or more elements. These then formed the basis of a search of more than 3.7 million formulae (式) for a chemical that could break down water-known to exist as ice at Mars’ poles and under the planet’s surface a process the team said would have taken human researcher 2,000 years. The result was a catalyst that could release oxygen from water, with the potential for use on a future Mars mission.
If a catalyst that can produce oxygen from water can be made on Mars, this would remove the need for missions to carry such a catalyst from Earth. Jiang says that for every square metre of Martian material, his group’s system could make nearly 60 grams of oxygen per hour, potentially removing the need for astronauts on future missions to the planet to carry oxygen from Earth to use when they get there. “The robot can work continuously for years,” says Jiang.
Jiang points out that his group’s robotic chemist could also be used to produce other useful catalysts on Mars, for processes like fertilizing (施肥) plants. “Different chemicals can be made by this robot,” he says. And Mars isn’t the only place where it could be used. “Maybe lunar soil is another direction,” Jiang says.
22. What can we learn about the study
A. A chemist with a robotic arm is involved.
B. Researchers aim to purify the water on Mars
C. Oxygen is of vital importance in space travels
D. Materials from Mars are analysed to produce catalysts.
23. What is Andy Cooper’s attitude towards the study
A. Unconcerned. B. Approving.
C. Disapproving D. Skeptical.
24. What’s the major advantage of the AI-powered system in the study
A. Integration of materials. B. Precise calculation.
C. Flexibility of movement. D. High-speed operation.
25. According to Jiang, which of the following is correct
A. The robot can stand endless working time.
B. Martian catalysts can produce more oxygen
C. The system can make 60 grams of oxygen per day.
D. The robotic chemist can be applied in a broader way.

For making contact and communicating with a person, effective eye contact is essential to our everyday interaction with people, and also to those who want to be effective communicators in public places.____26____.
Generally in Western societies and many other cultures, eye contact with a person is expected to be regular but not overly persistent.____27____, causing the person who’s the object of a person’s stare to feel overly studied and uncomfortable.
____28____. The New Zealand Medical Journal reported that one reason so many young children fall victim to attacks by pet dogs is their overly-lasting eye contact with pets, which causes them to feel threatened and defensive.
Overly lasting eye contact is also a sign of a person’s over-awareness of the messages they are giving. In the case of people who try to lie to someone, they may maintain their eye contact so that their lies would not be noticed.____29____. But on the contrary, evasive (逃避的) eye contact is a sign of discomfort. Why do we avoid looking at a person It may be because we feel ashamed to be looking at them if we’re being dishonest of trying to take them in. Evasive eye contact may also a sign of dishonesty.
However, Scotland’s University of Stirling found that, in a question-and-answer study among children, those who maintained eye contact were less likely to come up with the correct answer to a question than those who looked away to consider their response.____30____, when this energy could be spent on deep thinking.
A. This is a widely recognized indicator of lying
B. Constant eye contact is often considered to be rude
C. Eye contact is the act of looking into someone’s eyes
D. But there’s something you may not know about eye contact
E. Overpowering eye contact can make the other person excited

There aren’t enough resources to identify and cure the factors that are causing populations of animals around the world to decline. Artificial intelligence might have the power to change that.
When an endangered seabird hits a power line, it ____31____ “very much like the laser noise from Star Wars,” says preservation biologist Marc Travers. He should know, as his team from the Endangered Seabird Recovery Project recorded thousands of hours of audio to determine if power lines ____32____ local seabirds. Travers was trying to establish how ____33____ birds were killed by power lines on the island of Kauai in Hawaii in 2011.
His team recorded 600 hours of audio and sent the recordings to Preservation Metrics, a company that assists preservation efforts with AI ____34____. Preservation Metrics used a program to “listen” to the recordings and check off the sounds that signified bird electrocutions (电击). The result was ____35____, as the number of bird electrocutions was in the thousands. ____36____ proof that power lines were killing a significant number of birds, the team worked with the local utility (公共设施) service to reduce bird deaths.
In science fiction stories such as The Matrix, AI-powered machines take over the world and end life on the planet as we know it. But ____37____, programs that use AI to sort through mountains of data might just save some species from disappearing permanently.
By many ____38____, humans have been poor keepers of the planet. Humans have altered as much as 97 percent of land ecosystems. Key populations of monitored animals have declined as much as 68 percent since 1970. The decline in ____39____ around the world has created a miserable situation. Preservation efforts ____40____ key resources they need to be effective.
Humans, ____41____, fortunately have AI-based tools that can help now. AI can quickly and accurately sort through large amounts of data created by observations in the field. Then other programs such as PAWS (Protection Assistant for Wildlife Security) can help analyse the data and suggest the most effective ways to focus preservation efforts.
In large national parks and wildlife reserves, ____42____ hunters are a danger for animals both big and small. Some animals are worth a lot of money on the black market. Park keepers are left with a(n) ____43____ task because there is too much land to cover. But the PAWS programme allows park keepers to focus their efforts. PAWS has even ____44____ the existence of trap lines in areas not yet watched by park keepers!

B. Showing their strength by smacking the elbows.
A Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
17. What does the writer think of Nicaraguan culture after there for three years
A. Strange and boring. B. Simple and uncivilized.
C. Backward but fascinating. D. Surprising but worth learning.

【答案】18. A 19. C 20. C 21. A

【答案】22. D 23. B 24. D 25. D
