Section A
Directions: In Section A, you will hear ten short conversations between two speakers. At the end of
each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. The conversations and the
questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a conversation and a question about it, read the
four possible answers on your paper, and decide which one is the best answer to the question you
have heard.
1. M: How quickly technology changes. People now do many things with their mobile phones.
W: I know I feel so behind the time.
Q: What can be learned about the woman
2. W: It’s all right to wear jeans for a class presentation, isn’t it
M: That’s what I’m wearing. But if we wear jackets too, maybe we won’t look so casual.
Q: What does the man imply
3. W: What’s up with Donald I’ve never seen him so happy.
M: His boss gave performance evaluations this morning.
Q: What can be learned about Donald
4. W: I really like Emma. Nothing seems to worry or upset her.
M: But she’s not very good at accepting new ideas or opinions, which would be a bit of a problem,
working with so many new people.
Q: What does the man say about Emma
5. W: There is nothing I like more than a good mystery novel when I’ve got some spare time.
M: I like to read too. But I prefer non-fiction: history, social commentary and stuff like that.
Q: What does the man imply
6. W: Hello, could you fit me in for an appointment today I need a stylist who’s good at cutting
straight hair.
M: Judy is good at that. She is the owner. How about the noon

Section B
Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages, and you will be asked several questions
on each of the passages. The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once.
When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which would be
the best answer to the question you have heard.
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
I give a lot of papers at conferences to all kinds of different audiences, with different levels of
English and different levels of experience. Sometimes the audience will all be very fluent, very well-
qualified and very knowledgeable, other times they’ll be slightly less familiar with the field. I usually
talk for between 45 minutes and an hour and it’s hard to keep people’s attention for that long, so I make
sure I know what I’m going to say like the back of my hand! I write the whole talk out on my computer
first, word for word, as I’m going to say it. Then I re-write it onto little postcards, cutting a few bits
out. Then finally, in the run-up to actually giving the talk, I read these cards over and over and over
again to fix the things in my mind. I still refer to the cards when I’m talking, but only as a guide.
Knowing the talk this well is the key to it all, really. It means I can say something not presented on the
cards and respond more to the audience, adapt things as I feel fit. I think it’s really important to tailor
things to suit the audience, to make sure they can relate to what you’re saying. It’s also good to inject
a few laughs into the talk if you can, keep it light. Some people seem to forget that you can be serious,
but still have fun!
Questions:
11. What is the speaker mainly talking about
12. Why does the speaker prepare the postcards
13. According to the speaker, which of the following is important while giving a presentation
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
According to a recent survey carried out by The Economist magazine, Ireland is by far and away
the best country in the world to live in.
Once Ireland joined the EU in 1973, the foundations for economic growth started to be put into
place. The 1990s saw the economic miracle finally arrive—a total transformation in Ireland’s economic
fortunes was born. The country experienced year-on-year growth of almost 10 per cent and now has
the fourth-highest GDP per head in the world—a massive 36.5 thousand dollars per person. Coupled
with this has been a huge drop in unemployment from 20 per cent 15 years ago to around 4 per cent
today, all of which has meant Dublin’s newspapers now come with ever-expanding job sections and
the country is looking to import up to 300 thousand new workers in the next few years.
In many ways, Ireland is the perfect advertisement for the policies of the IMF and the World Bank
as it is one of the few economies that has opened itself up to free trade, foreign investment and

unregulated business activity, cut welfare spending and checked wage increases and yet still managed
to boom. It is this, coupled with the traditional values of family and community life, which have pulled
so many people back to the old country.
Questions:
14. According to the passage, what is Ireland’s GDP per head
15. Which of the following is true concerning the policy adopted in Ireland
16. What is the passage mainly about
