(本题8分)Christmas at my house meant colorful decorations, candles in every window, homemade dinners by Mom and her matching red coat. I always believed that someday my own kids would gather here and enjoy the traditions that had been passed down each December.
Life had other plans Mom found breast cancer in 2006 and died three years later. Three years after her death. I made my yearly trip to my childhood home for Christmas with my dad and sister. When I hunted for Christmas decorations up in the attic, an unusual yellow envelope caught my eye. Inside was a never published children’s book by Mom, dated February 10, 1993. It was titled The Evil Stepmother (Who Wasn’t). It’s the story of a little girl who loses her mother to cancer. Her father soon remarries, and at Christmas, the girl returns home to find her stepmother crying with a woman’s photograph in her hands. The stepmother says that she lost her mother, too, and always misses her most at Christmas.
I read Mom’s book and wondered why she had been moved to write it. She was years away from her cancer at the time. But there was no stepmother in our lives. So I put the book away, found the decorations I came for, and forgot abourt Mom’s book quickly.
Without the home that had been full of so many memories, I didn’t celebrate Christmas any more. I began to avoid the holiday music and even, for a while, the color red.
That changed in December 2017. Dad brought a woman to Christmas unexpectedly. When we first met we hugged each other shyly. Soon, she had Dad and me laughing. It was going so well. The three of us went out to pick out gifts. That’s when “While Christmas” began to play over the store’s speakers. I froze. It was the song Mom sang to me as a child to get me to sleep. Tears streamed down my face.
We got home, and I went to my room to calm down. There was a knock on the door, Dad’s girlfriend. She told me that Christmas was hard for her too and that she had lost her mother to Alzheimer’s.
“Do you see my coat ” she asked. “It was my mom’s. Your dad tells me your mother had a red coat too. Maybe we can wear them together sometime ”
I remembered the scene from Mom’s book and hugged this woman who made my dad happy, who was offering us a second chance at Christmas.
A year later, my sister and I attended Dad’s wedding. This past December, I hosted my first Christmas in New York. My stepmother and I decorated the house, candles in every window. We walked arm in arm down Broadway in our mothers’ red coats.

(本题8分)You’re doing homework online for a science class. A question comes up: Do newborn human babies see the world in black and white Do you guess or search for the answer Searching online for the answer may get you a better grade on the homework. But a study suggests it won’t necessarily help you learn.
Psychologist Amold Glass gave his students a series of quiz?style online homework assignments. The day before a lesson, students answered homework questions about the upcoming material. They answered similar questions in class a week later and again on the exam. If you read about a topic again and again, you’re not likely to remember it very well. But if you test yourself again and again, you will have better performance in the end. So the students in Glass’s classes should have performed better on each set of questions in the homework series, and then best of all on the exam.
For many years, students had improved through each set of questions and did best on the exam. But later, many students are doing more poorly on the exam than before. Glass wonders “What a bizarre result that is How can it be ” His students tend to blame themselves, thinking, “I’ m not smart enough,” or “I should have studied more.” He suspects something else is going on, so he think about what has changed over those 11 years. One big thing is the rise of smartphones. So it is easier today to quickly go online and find the answer to just about any homework question. But students can’t use phones during an exam. And that might explain why they aren’t doing as well on the tests.
To test this, Glass and Kang asked students in 2017 and 2018 whether they came up with their homework answers themselves or looked them up. Students who tended to look up answers also tended to do better on homework than their exams.
28.(2分)What can we infer from the first 2 paragraphs
A.Doing homework online is a trend. B.Childish question is hard to answer.
C.Thinking over a question helps you a lot. D.It is necessary to find an effective learning method.

A.Students get enough knowledge from tests.
B.Questions on tests were chosen from homework.
C.Students performed better on tests than on homework.
D.Questions on tests had nothing to do with homework.
30.(2分)What does the underlined word “ bizarre” mean
A.Final. B.Strange. C.Possible. D.Obvious.
31.(2分)What would be the best title
A.Bad Effects of Online Knowledge B.Technology is not Always Good for Us
C.What Is the Best Way to Get Knowledge D.Guessing Answers or Searching Them Online
(本题8分)Climate change is changing the migration routes of animals worldwide. Take the mule deer for example. Every spring in Wyoming, green-up first appears at lower altitudes before progressing up the mountainside. Migrating mule deer follow and seek food on this green wave. But as a changing climate leads to more frequent and more severe droughts, the greenery is not as abundant as it used to be.
Ellen Aikens, a researcher from the University of Wyoming, tracked mule deer as they surfed the green wave. In comparison to wet years, the green-up lasted across the landscape for about half as long in drought years and was also fragmented. Although the deer were able to keep up with the faster green wave, the nutritional value was lower, leaving the animals less prepared for the challenges of the year ahead.
Meanwhile in Europe, the population of Bewick’s swans that spend the winter in the Netherlands is declining. But when researchers looked at the data more closely, they found an increase in the wintering population of swans in Germany. It turns out that since the 1970s, the swans’ wintering habitat has shifted an average of 13 kilometers to the east each year.
“The swans like to spend time where it’s 5℃. And the temperature line has shifted in the same rate as the swans shifted eastward,” said Rascha Nuijten, an ecologist at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology.
These findings are important to our understanding of the conservation of migrant animals. When it comes to protecting a certain species, it’s not just about the current situation. Nature is dynamic. And the species that is present now might not be present in 10 years, not because we didn’t protect it but because maybe it is dynamic in its way. We need to include the dynamics of nature into our legislation and management.
32.(2分)What’s the challenge the mule deer face
A.Wet years. B.Low altitudes.
C.Fast green wave. D.Lack of quality food.
33.(2分)What do we know about Bewick’s swans from Paragraph 3
A.They are endangered.
B.They used to spend winter in Germany.
C.They move their wintering habitats eastward.
D.Germany has more of them than the Netherlands.
34.(2分)What does Rascha Nuijten intend to tell us
A.Its warmer in the east.
B.The 5℃ line shifts at a fast rate.
C.The swans move with the temperature line.
D.Climate change affects the swans’ feeding habits.
35.(2分)What is the purpose of the passage
A.To introduce two research findings.
B.To appeal to protect animals in a dynamic way.
C.To discuss methods of fighting climate change.
D.To explain why animals change their migration routes.

(本题10分)Some people seem to have a skill for learning languages. They can pick up new vocabulary, master rules of grammar, and learn to write in the new language more quickly than others. 36 First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or teacher. 37 They try to find the patterns and rules by themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from their mistakes.
38 Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language. They look for such a chance. They find people who speak the language and ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. 39 They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things. They are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word.
40 They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them.
A.Successful language learning is active learning.
B.They will try their best to communicate with others.
C.They discover their own way to learn the language.
D.Here’s a study of the way children learn to speak.
E.What makes language learning so much easier for them
F.They find it easy to practice using the language regularly.
G.Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose.
