Compared with physicists such as Marie Curie or Richard Feynman, Wu
Chien-shiung is not a household name in China, where she was born and grew up, or in the
United States, where she spent most of her life, but she was one of the most influential
nuclear physicists of the 20th century, one that “radically (根本上)” changed human’s view
of the universe.
Born on May 31, 1912, Wu was a diligent student. After graduating from
the former National Central University in Nanjing in 1934, Wu enrolled at the University of
California, Berkeley at the age of 24 to continue her study in physics.
She was always cautious in experiments. She didn’t start collecting data until she fully
understood the instruments. To get accurate results, she worked hard day and night at a
laboratory and gained a reputation for accuracy. There was a saying among physicists: If the
experiment was done by Wu, it must be correct.
Wu was honored with the National Medal of Science in 1975 and became the president
of the American Physical Society that same year. She was recognized as one of the best
experimental physicists in the world. Wu retired from her position at Columbia University in
1981. During her 44-year career as a nuclear physicist, Wu’s remarkable achievements won
her nicknames such as “Chinese Madame Curie”, “queen of nuclear research” and “first lady
of physics”.
Although she spent most of her life in the US, Wu always wore qipao, a traditional
Chinese gown. “She indeed had set a great model for women and girls to ‘see the
limitlessness of life’, and ‘what can be gained by pushing past the barriers around
you’, ”wrote Jada Yuan, Wu’s granddaughter, in an article when she recalled the time spent
with Wu. “She was fighting to be seen and respected at a time when women and Chinese
people in America rarely were," Yuan also wrote.
20. What do we know about Wu Chien-shiung from the first paragraph
A. She was born and grew up in the United States.
B. Her influence on nuclear physics was significant.
C. She was equally well-known in China and the United States.
D. She was a physicist who only changed the view of the universe slightly.

Autonomous driving vehicles may sound like science fiction, but they are racing into
our daily lives sooner than many expected. Nowadays, people can hail (打车) robotaxis by
using ride-hailing apps on their mobile phones in certain areas of Wuzhen, Zhejiang
Province.
All they need to do is to input pickup and drop-off points and the number of passengers
and a self-driving taxi approaches with a safety operator sitting behind the wheel to monitor
the vehicle for safety. The vehicle runs smoothly and is capable of fully recognizing stop
signs as it automatically decelerates before finally coming to a stop. As traffic lights change
from red to green, the taxi moves through the crossings.
Last December, Baidu officially opened its Apollo Park in Wuzhen, which serves as an
important R&D, design, application and testing base for autonomous vehicles in the Yangtze
River Delta region. As the fourth demonstration base for intelligent-connected vehicles built
by Baidu in China, the park is equipped with facilities such as a vehicle-road coordination

16-year-old Abigail, knowing that she was in for a rough afternoon, sighed as the door
shut behind her mother. She thought back to when her mother asked her to watch her
younger brother, Harry, for a few hours while she went to a meeting at work.
“What will Harry and I do together for an entire afternoon ” she complained. Her
brother had a reputation for causing trouble. “You can play outside,” her mother replied.
“You both love to play basketball.” “I guess that would be okay,” Abigail answered.
Now Abigail looked out the window at the pouring rain and frowned(皱眉). There
went her plan of spending the afternoon playing basketball. She looked at Harry nervously
and said, “It’s raining too hard to go outside, so what would you like to do instead ” Harry

shrugged (耸) his shoulders. “Do you want to color with crayons ” “Coloring is boring,”
Harry said.
Abigail sighed. This was exactly what she had worried about. “Come on, Harry, we
can’t just sit here all afternoon. Please think of something you want to do.” Harry’s face lit
up as he asked, “Can we play hide-and-seek ”
Abigail had stopped playing hide-and-seek years ago, but she was willing to do almost
anything to keep Harry out of trouble until their mother came home. She covered her eyes
with her hands and started counting. When she reached 50, she called out, “Ready or not,
here I come!”
Abigail started by looking in the family room and then made her way into the kitchen.
As she wondered where Harry was hiding, the perfect place popped into her head. She raced
to the garage and climbed the stairs to the attic(阁楼). The floor was so dusty that she easily
followed Harry’s footprints to where he was hiding behind a pile of boxes. “I found you!”
she laughingly yelled. As Harry hopped up to run away, he knocked over several boxes.
Abigail was about to scold him when the contents of the boxes caught her eyes. Beautiful
beads(珠子)of all shapes, colors, and sizes were now rolling around the attic floor.

Dear Jack,
I hope this letter finds you well. I’m thrilled to inform you that our city museum is hosting an exhibition titled “Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Through the Ages” next Sunday. Since you love Chinese culture so much, I think you’ll really enjoy it.
The exhibition will show us beautiful artworks from different times in China’s history. It’s a great chance to see how Chinese art has changed and grown over the years. Let’s meet in front of our school at 9 AM. We can take the subway (Line 3) to the museum. It’s not far from the subway station to the museum, so we can walk there. It’ll be a fun way to spend the morning and see some of our city too.
I really want to go to the exhibition with you and learn more about the paintings and writing. I think it will be more fun with your ideas and thoughts about the art.
Looking forward to our little adventure!
Best wishes,
Li Hua

“Cool beads! Do you think Mom would mind if we used them ” said Harry, bending down to pick them up. “I don’t see why she would when they are just sitting up here gathering dust.” Abigail replied with a wide smile. “Besides, how could she mind if we used them to make gifts for her These would make awesome necklaces.” Harry returned Agigail’s smile as they collected the beads, excited by the thought of having something fun to do on a rainy afternoon.
When their mother came home, Abigail and Harry presented her with their gifts. Abigail’s necklaces had been carefully designed and planned; each necklace had its own unique pattern. Harry, on the other hand, had not planned, stringing his beads in a very casual way, picking whatever bead was nearest and adding it to the others. The end results, however, were still interesting and beautiful. “What a wonderful welcome!” said their mother happily. “I had forgotten all about my grandmother’s collection of beads. Where did you find them ” “In the attic,” replied Harry with a smile. “They were playing hide-and-seek!”

Part B
M:Hello, Mary. Where are you going
W:Hi, Tom. I am going to the gym to practice playing badminton. I will take part in next month’s badminton match.
M:Wow, sounds great! You still have a month to practice.
W:Yes. I go to the gym to practice playing badminton every day after school.
M:Who is your partner then
W:My classmate Linda. We practice together every day.
1.Why did you choose her as your partner
Linda and I are not only classmates, we are also friends. I’ve known her for ten years. We all like playing badminton very much. We have an understanding in this regard. I think we can do a better job as a team.
2. Why do you take part in the match
I didn’t want to take part in it at first. But no one in our class wanted to take part in the match. Our P.E. teacher was a little disappointed. He spoke to me and asked me if I could take part in it. I said yes. Anyway, our P.E. teacher is also very diligent. He guides us at the gym every day. But I don’t think winning or losing is important.
3.What do you think is important then
I think the most important thing is to improve my willpower during the match. It is the uncertainty of the outcome that makes the match so fascinating. The real meaning of the match is to take part in it. We show our ability in the game and that was enough.
Part C
Cleaning the Tank
Tom wanted to keep a pet fish. He saved his pocket money for months and finally bought a pet fish. Tom put a beautiful toy house with windows in the tank for his pet fish. However, after a month, Tom noticed that the tank was getting dirty. Tom’s father told him how to clean the tank so that his pet fish wouldn’t get hurt. First, Tom’s father asked Tom to take the toy house out of the tank carefully. When Tom took his hand out of the water, he noticed that the water was smelly. Tom wanted to get the fish out of the water quickly and poured the dirty water out. But his father told him that he should save some of the water in the tank. Tom said that he could just get some running water from the tap. There was no need to save the water from the tank. His father told him that running water from the tap could be harmful to the fish. Tom couldn’t put the pet fish into fresh water right away. Instead, he needed to put the fish in a cup with some of the dirty water for a while. Tom finally understood and he promised he would clean the tank correctly next time.
