Tyler was a unpleasant student, who sat in the back row of the classroom. Every time I called him to answer questions, he'd reply with a flip (轻率的) answer. If he got it wrong, he would get very angry.
Usually kids could sit quietly in class. However Tyler was just loud. One day, Tyler was talking while I was teaching. When the school year was over, he wrote me a thank-you note about how good the year had been for him. I still have it today and find it very moving to read again when I get stressed about teaching.

During my time abroad in college, I traveled to 15 countries in Europe, and it fully changed my life. It changed my view on the world and on my life goals in general. So with that experience, I always knew I wanted to travel more. During school breaks and immediately after graduation, I took three other long backpacking trips around Asia, the Middle East, and Europe again. I realized I had visited 50 countries. My goal was to visit 100 countries by the time I was 30. For whatever reason, I thought that sounded cool. I ended up achieving that goal at about 25.
In 2006, I got an email from a friend saying that there was a record of the youngest to visit every country in the world. I basically assessed (评价) how long I had to break the record and where I had to go. Even if I didn’t get the record, it’d still be fun and I’d get to see the whole world. It turns out that it is a great decision, and I have done so much around the world. I became the youngest American to visit every country in 2011 when I was 32 after safely visiting.
But like everyone, I needed to make money to afford the travel I wanted, so I got a proper Wall Street job, worked really hard, and did pretty well. But in the summer of 2008, I simply resigned (辞职) my position at a major Wall Street firm. It happened right before the major collapse (倒塌，倒闭) of several major firms, so it made me look smart, but it was just coincidence (碰巧). I didn’t specifically leave my job to pursue the goal. I left the job because I needed a rest after eight years.

Every school has students who stand out for their abilities and their eagerness (渴望) to learn. In Mexico, a school created a program to work with them. In 2019. both teachers Lotta Andersson and John Rennie got the idea to provide learning opportunities for students with a desire for knowledge. They are English coordinators (协调员) in the school. “We want to have a program to encourage students who really have the abilities and the interests to learn more and continue accepting challenges,” Andersson said during a recent interview.
Students in the program, which was called Learning Challenges, met with the teachers about once a month. Andersson and Rennie would help us choose research topics. We then worked with the teachers to find books, interview subjects and Internet sources, While in Learning Challenges, I gave statements on European culture and the fashion industry.
When asked what skills students had formed in the program, which ended in June 2020because of the limits of a common disease. Andersson said, “They had learned to ask questions, be more open-minded and see things from different angles (角度). Also, they mastered the skills-reflecting more, acting actively, and learning not to put limits on themselves.”
A student, Yihane Abed, carried out research on the sun, the moon, stars, planets, etc, while in Learning Challenges. “The skills I developed were teamwork and the ways to do research and give a good presentation,” she said.
Andersson and Rennie continue to help students pursue their love of learning. “The program doesn’t exist formally, but as an important part of the culture at school, it is still needed,” Andersson said. “There is much more difference, not only for students who need extra help, but also for those who are higher achievers.”
