23-year-old Rachna Kumari is a soft-spoken young woman selling unique wheat stalk paintings (麦秆画) handmade by herself. Every morning, even before her mother awakens, she finishes cooking and cleaning before cycling 5km to run her shop alone. Over the past year, she has sold about 200 of her paintings, 50 of which were bought since she opened her shop in April this year.
However, back in 2019, Rachna had almost given up on life after having to leave school due to family’s financial problems. She became depressed, thinking she would have to spend the rest of her days doing household chores.
Around this time, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) came into the picture with Project Lehar, started to provide vocational training, entrepreneurship (创业), and life skills courses to young women. Project Lehar, run by AKF in partnership with The King’s Trust International, enables girls and young women from disadvantaged backgrounds to rediscover and realise their potential. This was a good opportunity for Rachna to not just continue her studies but also to convince her parents to drop her marriage plans.
After she was admitted into college through Project Lehar, she was also given some suggestions on entrepreneurial and career prospects. One such session on wheat stalk painting made her fall in love with this traditional art form of Bahraich and her creativity was brought out.
Now she is economically independent by selling wheat stalk paintings. However, Rachna is not resting on her achievements. Her shop also doubles up as a training centre where other girls from disadvantaged backgrounds like her who want to stand on their feet get a second chance to change their lives like she did.
While teaching these enthusiastic young girls is a joyful experience, what gives Rachna more pride is being chosen as a wheat stalk painting trainer by the foundation. From being a trainee under this project to now becoming its paid trainer, Rachna’s life has come full circle.
24. What once left Rachna in low spirits
A. Losing her favorite job. B. Dropping out of school.
C. Riding to her shop alone. D. Doing household chores.

Lacking money makes people focus on the present — but lacking water makes them plan for the future. The human brain is sensitive to scarcity (稀缺). Take money, for example: when people play a game that makes some players immediately wealthier or poorer, those who lose money start making decisions that result in their being better off now but worse off later. One potential explanation for this tendency is that the sense of not having enough of what we need makes it harder for us to focus and plan.
In one experiment, college students read articles about a severe water shortage or plenty of water due to increased rainfall. Those exposed to scarcity thoughts showed a heightened focus on the future, agreeing more with saving resources and planning ahead. Contrarily, those who read about a water surplus prioritized living in the present and were less concerned about saving.
Moreover, we compared attitudes in two Iranian cities, Shiraz and Yazd, which differ greatly in water availability. Residents of water-scarce Yazd valued “long-term purpose” more than those in water-abundant Shiraz.
Expanding our investigation globally, we found individuals from historically water-scarce nations tended to place a greater emphasis on saving and planning for the future. For example, in Europe, people in water-rich Iceland thought less about the future, whereas those in dry Spain thought more about the future.
Moreover, countries’ history of water scarcity seemed related to cultural differences in a way that more obvious factors didn’t. For example, income per capita (人均) did not explain differences across cultures. And although corruption (腐败) might make it hard for people to think about the future, it was not a strong predictor, either. You might guess that people think about the future more in places where they tend to live longer, but astonishingly, national life expectancy was not as strong a predictor as water scarcity.
Our work suggests that as many places dry up, global warming could reshape how people think, pushing entire communities toward more cautious, environmentally friendly, future-oriented behavior. Water scarcity could be uniquely powerful motivation for us to prepare for and respond to a warmer world.
28. What does the example of game-playing in Paragraph 1 illustrate
A. Scarcity results in shortsighted decisions. B. Game-playing needs a higher focus.
C. Game players become rich overnight. D. Losing money makes us plan for the future.
29. Who might have a long-term purpose
A. People living in Shiraz. B. People in dry Spain.
C. People focusing on the past. D. People reading about water surplus.
30. What most likely accounts for cultural differences
A. Corruption. B. Income per capita.
C. A sense of water scarcity. D. National life expectancy.
31. What will water scarcity inspire people to do
A. Respond to climate change actively. B. Change our attitude toward family.
C. Make people care about community. D. Be more cautious about their relationship.

Last summer, two nineteenth-century cottages were rescued from remote farm fields in Montana, to be moved to an Art Deco building in San Francisco. The houses were made of wood. These cottages once housed early settlers as they worked the dry Montana soil; now they hold Twitter engineers.
The cottages could be an example of the industry’s odd love for “low technology” a concept associated with the natural world, and with old-school craftsmanship that exists long before the Internet era. Low technology is not virtual — so, to take advantage of it, Internet companies have had to get creative. The rescued wood cottages, fitted by hand in the late eighteen-hundreds, are an obvious example, but Twitter’s designs lie on the extreme end. Other companies are using a broader interpretation of low technology that focuses on nature.
Amazon is building three glass spheres filled with trees, so that employees can “work and socialize in a more natural, park-like setting.” At Google’s office, an entire floor is carpeted in grass. Facebook’s second Menlo Park campus will have a rooftop park with a walking path.
Olle Lundberg, the founder of Lundberg Design, has worked with many tech companies over the years. “We have lost the connections to the maker in our lives, and our tech engineers are the ones who feel impoverished (贫乏的), because they’re surrounded by the digital world,” he says. “They’re looking for a way to regain their individual identity, and we’ve found that introducing real crafts is one way to do that.”
This craft-based theory is rooted in history. William Morris, the English artist and writer, turned back to pre-industrial arts in the eighteen-sixties, just after Industrial Revolution. The Arts and Crafts movement defined itself against machines. “Without creative human occupation, people became disconnected from life,” Morris said.
Research has shown that natural environments can restore our mental abilities. In Japan, patients are encouraged to “forest-bathe”, taking walks through woods to lower their blood pressure.
These health benefits apply to the workplace as well. Rachel Kaplvin, a professor of environmental psychology, has spent years researching the restorative effects of natural environments. Her research found that workers with access to nature at the office — even simple views of trees and flowers — felt their jobs were less stressful and more satisfying. If low-tech offices can potentially nourish the brains and improve the mental health of employees then, fine, bring on the cottages.
32. Why did the writer mention the two nineteenth-century cottages
A. To show that Twitter is having a hard time.
B. To show that old cottages are in need of protection.
C. To show that early settlers once suffered from a dry climate in Montana.
D. To show that Internet companies have rediscovered the benefits of low technology.
33. Low technology is regarded as something that _____.
A. is related to nature B. is out of date today
C. consumes too much energy D. exists in the virtual world
34. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 5
A. Human beings have destroyed many pre-industrial arts.
B. Human beings have a tradition of valuing arts and crafts.
C. Human beings can become intelligent by learning history.
D. Human beings can regain their individual identity by using machines.
35. What can be the best title for the passage
A. Past Glories, Future Dreams
B. The Virtual World the Real Challenge
C. High-tech Companies, Low-tech Offices
D. The More Craftsmanship, the Less Creativity

Dressed in my white polo shirt and black pants, I was ready for my first day as a fashion’s worker. I had been working on a register for over two weeks when they decided that I was ready to work as a shop assistant.
I remember the feeling of excitement because this was something new, and nervousness because I didn’t know what was going to happen. I didn’t even know whom I would be working with. So many thoughts came floating into my head as I walked from my car to the store.
“What if the customers don’t like me What if I can’t handle this job Will I remember everything ” With my mind filled with all these what ifs, I walked back to the break room and put my purse in my locker. Then, with my shaking hands and upset stomach, I walked back to the front of the store and met with Theresa at the service desk where Theresa greeted me warmly.
“We are going to have you work with Vicki today. She is a friendly lady and takes charge of the men’s department. She can teach you how to communicate with the customers. So let’s take a walk back to the men’s department, and she can get you trained in,” Theresa said.
“Okay,” I replied with nervousness.
Walking for what seemed like a long time, we finally reached our destination. Vicki, a young lady in her early thirties, came bouncing out to receive us with a light- hearted walk and a brilliant white smile. We must have caught her a little off guard because she stopped, stared at us for a moment, and said, “Hi Theresa!”
“Hey, Vicki! I’d like you to meet Kayli. She is going to be working with you for the next couple of weeks.” Theresa introduced me to this young lady.
“Hi, Kayli,” she replied with more enthusiasm than I had expected.
“Well, I’ll leave it up to you, Vicki.” Theresa happily replied, then turned and walked away, leaving Vicki and me standing there.

根据前文“What knowledge do you have, or have you learned that you want to be reminded and pushed to improve in your life If you want to do better at it, there will be plenty of others that will want to do better at it too. (你拥有什么知识,或者你学到了你想要被提醒和推动改进你生活吗? 如果你想做得更好,就会有很多人也想做得更好。)”可知,这里提到如果你想在某方面做得更好,其他人也会有同样的愿望,接下来应该是鼓励读者去教导和分享。因此推断G项“所以,为什么不传授和分享你所知道的,帮助自己在这些事情上做得越来越好呢 ”符合语境,故选G。

【答案】One possible version:
In front of a stranger alone, my nervousness grew. I had a smile on my face. But as a matter of fact, I had butterflies in my stomach. I expected the usual uncomfortable silence that always happens when two strangers meet and are supposed to be friends right away, but I was wrong. Vicki was very comfortable to be around and easy to talk to. She felt my nervousness. “Take it easy. Just be yourself and you will do a good job,” Vicki smiled at me. Then she explained different styles and trends, and how to assist customers.
Listening to her words, I started to relax and had more confidence in myself. I recited the information of many clothes and couldn’t wait to serve the customer on my own. That day I received ten customers and all of them showed satisfaction with me. I regained my confidence and no longer doubted myself. That day, I ended up learning more than just the tasks of a fashion’s worker. I learned to communicate, and to just be myself. Vicki has taught me that it was okay to be myself, and for that, I will be forever grateful.
