It was a cold May morning when I received an email from an old friend inviting me to join a 10-day all-girls surf trip. I knew I had to say yes. The trip seemed simple enough. 10 women aged 30 to 45, all complete strangers, were to meet on the coast of Portugal to try something new—surfing in the Atlantic Ocean. I have always loved traveling, so I eagerly sent an email to my boss asking for time off to make the trip.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over my past 33 years, it’s that adults typically spend their days mastering the things they’ve done before. It seems like we pride ourselves on becoming experts in whatever field we’ve fallen into, knowing more about less. Now, in theory, this is a great strategy, as it allows you to become really good at one particular thing, but it also kind of ends up leaving some skills lacking.
I met my new surfing companions on the grass of the hotel lawn in a small surf town called Ericeira. Despite our different personalities and backgrounds, we were all united in a strong desire to challenge ourselves, learn, tackle and grow.
The shores at Ericeira, where the beginners learn to surf, are shallow and covered with slippery rocks. They make for softer waves but are difficult to ride.
Guided by our amazing coaches, together, we faced the waves. Sometimes, it poured with rain, and the waves crashed around us, but we were still out there. And with every slip and fall, words of encouragement filled the air. Honestly, I probably spent most of my days frozen to the borne, but that didn’t matter because a new level of genuine joy and personal achievement had been unlocked.
Learning a new skill taught me the humility (谦虚) that can come from doing badly at something new, and the pride that develops when you finally manage to grasp something you’ve been working on. While surfing might not be my lifelong passion, trying it out inspired me to take more risks in life. You never know what you’re capable of if you don’t go out there and try.
24. What inspired the author to join the surf trip
A. Her love for travelling. B. Her desire to make new friends.
C. Her passion for sports. D. Her need to take a break from work.
25. What does the author think of adults’ focusing on mastering one field
A. It hurts one’s pride. B. It promotes one’s career success.
C. It narrows one’s potential. D. It broadens one’s view of the world.
26. Which words can best describe the author’s surfing experience
A. Relaxing but dangerous. B. Stressful and disappointing.
C. Tough and uninteresting. D. Challenging but rewarding.
27. What can be inferred about the author
A. She used to lack confidence in herself.
B. She determined to become an expert surfer.
C. She discovered her lifelong passion after the trip.
D. She was more willing to try new experiences in life. .

Middle school. For teens and their parents, the two words can arouse anxiety, fear and even horror. Kids are, all of a sudden, really growing up. Their bodies are changing: they’re dropping some of their childhood interests and trying on new ones. Friendships form and are torn apart. Academic expectations grow bigger.
But some books—like the novel Curlfriends: New in Town, written and drawn by Sharee Miller—remind us of the many possibilities and excitements that present themselves within those challenging years.
The book follows 12-year-old Charlie Harper, beginning her first day of middle school. This is no small change, and in order to cope, Charlie promises to “completely reinvent” herself. She is tired of letting other people label her and is ready to take control of her own story. What follows is a series of meetings, first with Nola. She introduces Charlie to her lunchtime crew. The girls come together around shared particulars of their lives—homework, girlhood and fashion—even if their differences in tastes and personalities create cracks of uncertainty from time to time.
Curlfriends is a delightful book packed with sunny illustrations. It also cuts into the heart of the challenging tensions that are part of this intermediate stage of life. Young teens want to be known and seen by others, but they are also coming to terms with who they are. It can be tricky, for example, to distinguish between the passions and pastimes that your parents picked for you and those you actively care to pursue. It can be difficult to figure out what you like and what you are like.
Curlfriends is also a book about finding one’s passions, responsibilities and independence despite changing situations. It is as much about expressions of self-respect as it is about showing care for others. The one constant in Charlie’s life is her love of drawing, and it’s through art that she figures out how to mark her place in middle school. It’s not all under her control, but, as with good art, sometimes mistakes along the way end up making for the most amazing details.
28. What is the central theme explored in Curlfriends: New in Town
A. The impact of parental expectations on teenagers.
B. The challenges of studies during the teenage years.
C. The transformations and opportunities in growing up.
D. The difficulty of making new friends in middle school.
29. What does Charlie plan to do in middle school
A. Follow her heart and passions. B. Listen to others more carefully.
C. Be more confident and outgoing. D. Live up to her parents’ expectations.
30. What is the tone of the book Curlfriends: New in Town
A. Serious and formal. B. Humorous and carefree.
C. Cold and indifferent. D. Light-hearted and inspiring.
31. What can be the best title of the text
A. Finding Her Place B. Seeking the Passions C. Changing with Times D. Maintaining Friendships
D
Another year of record fossil fuel burning leading to record high global temperatures. Time is running out to solve the climate crisis, and great disasters come near us. You’re probably used to such headlines, and you may have moments of hopelessness about the future. But can you turn such gloom (灰暗) messaging of climate crisis into meaningful change Our recent global study says yes—but the messages must be used wisely.
In 2019, in his book, David Wallace-Wells painted a terrifying landscape of the suffering awaiting us if we don’t address climate change, leaving many feeling consumed by fear and helplessness. Not everyone is a fan of his gloom messaging. Climate scientists like Michael Mann have warned against it, messaging that it can depress and discourage the public, and lead to further climate inaction. And the title of a new book by Hannah Ritchíe states clearly that it’s Not the End of the World: How We Can Be the First Generation to Build a Sustainable Planet.
To help figure out the precise impact of climate gloom messaging, we recently completed a large experiment. Our findings revealed that gloom messaging was highly effective for stimulating climate change information sharing, like posting on the Internet or social media. Wallace-Wells was right in this aspect. But Mann and Ritchie were also right. Hearing these messages actually decreased people’s positive behaviors against environmental pollution—when faced with the enormous messages of the climate crisis, many feel that individual-level actions might seem futile. So gloom messaging can do both things: cause helplessness, discouraging individual-level action; but also motivate people to spread the word.
Our research also found some other messages that moved the needle on climate change beliefs and actions. This suggests that understanding how different messages work, and in what contexts, will be vital to changing beliefs, spreading the word, and motivating action.
32. What does gloom messaging intend to deliver
A. The unstoppable tendency to disasters. B. The urgency to deal with climate crisis.
C. Disastrous effects of burning fossil fuels. D. Confidence in environmental protection.
33. Why do some climate scientists disagree with Wallace-Wells’view
A. Because they don’t believe there is severe climate crisis.
B. Because they worry it makes people give up climate actions.
C. Because they plan to build a new world in a sustainable planet.
D. Because they fear it will lead to more environmental pollution.
34. What does the underlined word “futile” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Meaningful. B. Critical. C. Pointless. D. Precious.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about …
A. The lack of solution for inspiring climate actions.
B. Right attitudes to climate change beliefs and behaviors.
C. The influences of gloom messages on climate behaviors.
D. The importance of studying the effects of different messages.

A woman in Portland, Oregon started her daily exercise habit with one activity—walking her dog. Lindsay Kee then added movements to this daily activity. Before leaving on the walk, she did some standing stretches. 36
Over time, Kee added more exercises around the dog walk. Adding exercises to an existing activity helped her take the pressure off of creating a whole new daily exercise. And now more than a year later, she consistently exercises around the dog walk.
37 Writer S. J. Scott created this term for his 2014 book of the same name. The idea behind habit stacking is to attach something you want to start doing to something you already do every day.
Exercise experts say habit stacking is especially helpful if you are trying to increase exercise time. Dana Santas is a movement expert who has trained more than 50 professional sports teams. She combines exercise habits with personal health care. For example, Santas does push-ups before every shower. 38 She says that her electric toothbrush makes a sound every 30 seconds to remind her to brush different teeth. But she uses the reminder to change her exercises.
Most people find keeping new habits difficult! While habit stacking is not a perfect solution, it does help with decision-making. 39 . Try combining the new, or what she calls “shaky”, behavior with something you have to do or deeply want to do. For example, if you wants to listen to a podcast, your strong habit, you must do it while exercising on a running machine. 40 So habit stacking is one of the best ways to start and keep new habits.
A. What Kee did is called habit stacking.
B. For you, this will strengthen your shaky habit.
C. And she does leg exercises while brushing her teeth.
D. This helps her remember to take them every morning.
E. On her return, she did other exercises such as jumping jacks.
F. The health experts also suggest two days a week of strength training. .
G. The technique helps to remove the barrier of deciding when or if to do something.

Walking on the street, the bitter cold of a December day in Washington, D. C. was ruining my mood. The temperature was below zero so I ducked into the subway station, hoping to get warm.
Warmth came to my body as I settled onto a bench with a cup of hot coffee. Now I was ready to relax and do some serious people-watching. I noticed a homeless man seated nearby. The pleasant smell of delicious food from the subway food court (餐饮区) was tempting me to consider an early dinner. From the longing look in my neighbor’s eyes it was obvious that he, too, noticed the good smell. I wondered how long it had been since he had eaten anything, expecting he would approach me for a handout (施舍). But he never did. My head and heart were battling it out: the former telling me to mind my own business, and the latter urging me to make an immediate trip to the food court for him.
While this inner debate was fierce, a well-dressed young couple suddenly approached. “Excuse me, sir,” began the husband. “We just finished eating and our appetite wasn’t as big as we thought. We hate to waste food. Can you help us out and put this to good use ” The kind stranger handed a large container with food. “Thank you.” came the grateful reply. Feeling good about what I had seen, but disappointed by my own lack of action, I observed my neighbor’s response to his sudden good fortune.
He lifted the soup, cupping his hands around the steaming bowl. It was obvious that he was going to enjoy this miracle meal. He opened his mouth and suddenly, he stopped.
The reason for this unexpected behavior soon became clear. Entering the hall was a new arrival, in his seventies, hatless and gloveless. His lightweight jacket was a poor protection against cold. His face and hands were red and damaged. People around focused on him with pity and whispered at this sad sight.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My neighbor was the only one to take action.
Tears blurred my vision when I went to buy food at the food court.

Dear Jonathan,
I am Li Hua, a Senior Three student. I am thrilled to hear the news of the upcoming addition of Special English. I believe it will not only increase the opportunities for our students to practice English listening, but also enrich our campus cultural atmosphere.
Given the limited time, I think the content should not only be novel but also short. I suggest the program should involve a variety of engaging content, such as interviews with native speakers, cultural exchanges, and popular English songs. This way, it will stimulate students’ enthusiasm for learning English and attract more listeners.
I believe that under your guidance, this program will win popularity with the students. Looking forward to the launch of the program.
Yours,
Li Hua

【作答示例】
One possible version:
My neighbor was the only one to take action. With a determined look on his face, he quickly put his miracle meal on the bench, stood up and walked over to the new arrival. Gently tapping the old man on the shoulder, he motioned for him to come and sit. Numb with cold, the old man didn’t expect the invitation, moving clumsily. Hardly had he seated himself when my neighbor tenderly put his own jacket over the shivering old man. Finally, he said cheerfully, “Can you help me out ” pointing to the meal and placing the steaming bowl of soup in the old man’s hands. My mind stopped battling and I had my decision.
Tears blurred my vision when I went to buy food at the food court. What my neighbor said exactly spoke my mind. Awfully ashamed of my initial hesitation and inaction, I felt obliged to do the same. Respectfully and cautiously, I approached them with steaming soup and a sandwich. People around cast an approving smile in my direction. “Can you help me out ” I asked. “Why not ” he responded jokingly, “But only if you share with me that sandwich, which is too much for a man of my age.” The three of us sat there in the subway station, sharing food and warmth on that cold December day, and for a moment, the bitter cold outside seemed to fade away. It wasn’t until that day that I truly learned the meaning of sharing.

M: That’s right. This bus will stop in front of the mall. But there’s some repairing work underway on the south side of Bryson Road. Bus Number 7 coming back this direction is being re-routed away from the road. It’s confusing, so…
W: Oh, I see.
M: For your return trip, I’d recommend taking bus Number 22 instead. It stops about two blocks from here.

W: Hi, I have an appointment for a tune-up on my car. My name is Yolanda Garcia.
M: I’m sorry, Ms. Garcia, but we’re pretty busy today. We might not be able to get to your car until the early evening. Would you like me to check our schedule for openings tomorrow morning instead
W: Oh, I’m going out of town then. Driving, actually. That’s why I scheduled my appointment for this afternoon. Is there anything you can do to speed up the process, at least
M: Let me see ...Our records say you don’t really need an oil change yet. Why don’t we save that job for later
W: That sounds good.

M: Oh no, I’ve been scheduled to work on Wednesday afternoon! That’s when my university’s Japanese class meets. I’ll have to switch shifts with somebody. You’re working in the morning—could you switch with me
W: Sorry, Neil, but I’m also busy on Wednesday afternoon. I have a dental appointment. Try asking whoever’s working the night shift that day, like Ruby and Hakeem.
M: OK, I will. But this is bad. I definitely told Mr. Romero that I wasn’t free on Wednesday afternoons.
W: Well, as a manager, he has a lot of information to keep track of. You should write down your availability for him when he comes in today. Then he’ll have something to refer to when he makes the next shift schedule.

M: Hmm, that sounds interesting, Emily. What’s it all about
W: Well, we’ve got a conference to explain the details tonight but basically, it’s to raise money to provide some facilities for the nearby primary schools. Would you be interested in helping out We provide all the training needed.
M: Absolutely, count me in. What would I need to do
W: We want people to help with the set-up, hand out water to runners, and manage the finishing line. There are lots of options; you can take multiple jobs if you want to, depending on what’s needed.
M: Okay, I’d like to work the finishing line and go from there.
W: Great! It starts early. We’re gathering around 4 a.m. The racers arrive from six to six-thirty to kick off at seven. We should be finished in the early afternoon.
M: No problem. I’m an early riser.

W: Picture a charming little city that’s full of town houses and statues of cats. What you’re imagining could very well be the city of Kuching, which is located in the Malaysian state of Sarawak.
First-time visitors to Kuching can get to know the city by taking a walk along the Sarawak River. The tree-lined path next to the river gives visitors a pleasant view of the Astana, the 19th-century palace that is the home of the state governor. Nearby is Fort Margherita, a white-walled building which was built to protect the city from attacks.
Besides old buildings and houses, cat statues also give Kuching its unique character. Whether it’s a huge white cat waving “hello” or a robot-cat family sitting by the river, cat statues are everywhere to be seen.
After that, it’s time to check out Kuching’s side streets, where you’ll find all sorts of craft shops and cafés. This is also where you can try some delicious local foods. For example, there’s nasi lemak, a sweet-smelling rice dish that also happens to be the national dish of Malaysia; or sarawak laksa, a dish that is made up of rice noodles served in a rich sour soup.
